What Went Wrong - Explained:

So what went wrong? The simple answer is states started to relax their restrictions and reopen their economies — giving employers, employees, and patrons a chance to go back out into the world and interact, fueling new cases.

It’s possible to lift restrictions slowly and safely, and a few states are meeting the benchmarks that experts recommend to do that. But most never fully controlled their outbreaks, instead forging ahead with reopening.

A mix of carelessness and partisanship is to blame. Under Trump, the federal government and some states appeared to prioritize the economy over public health, voicing discontent with the restrictions. Trump called to “LIBERATE” states from shutdowns. Some Americans took up that messaging, reopening their businesses and going back out. Mask-wearing became a politicized issue, and segments of the population rejected face coverings and other precautions against Covid-19.

And yet, many states started opening in early May, with no flareups until now. Gee, what has happened in the interim? Does the virus ignore large sweaty crowds committing violence?

Let me ask you a stupid question. Is anything unnecessarily worse good, whether is be .01%, .001% or even .001%? One unnecessary death is too much, isn't it? How would you like it if you or someone you loved died unnecessarily. Would statistics make you feel better?

What's really tragic is we could have saved about 50,000 lives if trump had acted just two weeks sooner.

Key word is that if Trump had followed CDC guidelines in his recommendations of reopening, deaths would have been prevented. He had control over that.

hell, the PGA tour sent 14 infected/potentially infected people home and they've been hardcore about staying clean.

a **** load of people were told to stay home/work from home and socially distance. and a bunch of smart people wore masks and washed their hands a lot (the same thing nurses and docs do).


here's what's gonna happen. the numbers will continue to grow over the summer and into the fall (it's just a game of dominoes) and the older folks (those last dominoes) will either have died, been sick or had their contemporaries die. then they vote.

Forgive me for saying this, but your post is about as uninformed as a post can be!

The rioters are people (not governments). They do not decide guidelines and regulations for the citizens of the state to follow.

I do not know what you are thinking by putting up such a post. The idea is for regulations of the governing body to be in place. Whether the people follow them or not is not the point. People will often do what they want and not what is right. Nonetheless, the reason for there being a governing body is for there to be a guideline to follow. The rioters and those breaking the guidelines can be fined. If you have nothing, then anarchy will follow. Is that what you are suggesting we have?

But I still disapprove of their behavior.

If everybody but you thinks your wife sucks, your wife probably sucks.

It's easier to blame Trump (who has done more than enough to be blamed for) than those restaurants and bars for ignoring mask and social distance requirements.

There has been very little evidence of transmission during outdoor gatherings, particularly when most of the participants wear masks.

There is overwhelming evidence of transmission during indoor gatherings like bars, restaurants, and churches. We just hit record infections, almost entirely due to people visiting Texas, Florida, and SC and going to bars, restaurants, and churches. The idiots are ruining the recovery for everyone.
 
From a perceptual standpoint Covid 19 is not dangerous enough. When people see the small percentages it doesn't register as a threat. They see it mostly affecting older folks. If this was reversed and it was more deadly to younger people the response would have been vastly different. The lack of leadership from the top down to local governments is killing the recovery. Partisanship continues to fuel the divide as each side digs in. This being an election year only exacerbates the problem. Bad or confusing information from the CDC and WHO have created distrust in the experts. Bad information gone rampant on social media is infecting the masses. The horrible overall health of Americans is being revealed. Protests and rallies don't help.

I don't think opening up was the problem. It was opening up without a plan. How this was not taken more slowly is beyond me. How they didn't see this coming is negligent at best.

Exponential growth

Ten people in the first day 20 people 3 days later 40 people 3 days after that 80 people three days after that.

That is the is the issue with Covid 19, it takes time to show illness, and in the meantime a lot of people will get infected. The initial cases don’t worry people but a month later lots of new reported cases. People always forget the growth rate in infections
 
Funny hearing Democrats harping concerns over people dying. Anyway, those in the High risk group relative to demographics and existing conditions should listen to Michelcow Obama and start eating better. Reduce your risk.

How's it an exception, and to what rule?

It's the most populous state in the country, was one of the first states to lock down, and among the strictest. Yet it never saw a decrease in its daily numbers and even then, started opening up weeks ago. You think Newsom did that because of Trump?
