Voting by Mail

Everyone should be able to vote by mail. We should simply send ballots to registered voters. Really, why bother with everyone needing to request a mail ballot? We need to prepare for the number of mail ballots that will be required and the amount of mail that will be transported. That means more mail carriers, more mail ballot handlers and everything else that goes into voting by mail. We should do as much early voting as possible.

Trump is laying the groundwork to claim hoax when he loses 80-20 but, oh well, he can cry and go home or to prison.

I have absolutely no intention of voting by mail. I will be showing up at my designated polling place, present a valid AK driver's license, and get a certified ballot. It is the only way to get a certified ballot in Alaska. All other ballots, including mail-in or absentee ballots, are "provisional" ballots. Provisional ballots are only counted if the vote total of the certified ballots are within 1%. Otherwise provisional ballots are not counted and just tossed into the trash.

Everyone can vote in Alaska, but only verified Alaskan residents and US citizens will have their votes counted.

Voting by mail will come about to the point that will make the "October surprise" a thing of the past. Voting will have had the election handle pulled early and gradually over a period of time well before the day of the election. It will be paper proof of voter selection until we start voting online vs by mail or in person. Candidates will have to get their message out earlier and more effectively. Perhaps even be selected by their party earlier. Oh, and there is practically nothing Trump won't do to win or keep hold of the presidency. The pandemic will be declared over enough before election day to have impact. Whatever you can think of, like Art Buchwald said "You can't make it up."

Democrats in the fall will have a major come down like they did in 2016 and believe mail will save them. Were it registered voters, they would not clamor so much. They need those who are not lawful to vote.

Here in Idaho I just voted by mail for the primary and am pleased. I now need to send in another ballot by mail request to vote in the fall. When i got the drivers license I was forced by Idaho to guarantee to them I am a citizen. I had to show them my birth certificate and due to Mom divorcing, she changed my last name so Idaho forced me to certify my last name is true going back to around 1952. Mom had me used the old last name until high school when she suddenly changed it to my stepfathers last name. So please, do not give me the shuck and jive it is too hard for blacks. I am white and easily jumped through those hoops. Idaho did not simply trust me, they wanted proof and I gave it to them.

When I voted in CA, where they still have me registered to vote there. it was a much simpler process for sure.

Idaho does it different yet I have full confidence in the integrity of this state. It is run by republicans in the city and state. I need to print out my request to vote by mail and get it in the mailbox soon.

And given the pandemic and unsure status....I cannot believe that overcrowded polling places with long lines are a smart thing.

This is months off so I would not worry much about the virus. If you can stand in line at the stores, you can do it to vote too.

My son worked the polling places for years. Typically the people working there are well past retirement and some very young adults. I am having a tough time seeing many of them wanting to work the polls anymore (covid related)

There are wild discrepancies in resources in many areas....a less populated suburb might have quite a few polling places that have a steady very light flow. (too many polling places)
Others places (frequently poor areas) may have waits in the hours - which someone who has little means can hardly afford.

Seems like absentee ballots are the way to go. I have NO problem with needing to request one. And people should be able to request permanent absentee. There should be no hoops to jump through.

My polling spot is a school I have never yet seen and 2 miles away. I like to vote by mail for a simple reason. I like to first research those up for election. I want to know their party affiliation. And the ballots I have voted for so far fail to show party affiliation.

My wife and I applied. I prefer going in person, but our polling station is pretty small and crowded. I do find it comical Trump is bashing the same method he uses to vote, but then again he's a "do as I say, not as I do" kind of guy.

Do you honestly believe that Obama stands in some long line to vote?

If voting by mail has been good enough for President of the United States of America Donald Trump, it's good enough for me.

Or done by Obama as well. Can you see Joe Biden standing there in a long line to vote?

Why do you keep bringing up that stale false equivalence?

By the way, how much have you really waited in line? For me, never except 20 minutes at Trader Joes. Then I became old enough to use senior hours.;)

Nobody has any clue what November will look like virus wise. Why wait until it is too late?

So you should not have any issue with others wanting to do the same.

FFS with millions out rioting and protesting do you really think you can power the hoax of public safety on voting? Really?

First it is not common to me. And my comments are not false.

I waited in line when I lived in CA to vote and not for a long time. I am a professional who sets my own time so for me there was no problem.

I later, still in CA at the time went to vote by mail and I am pleased I did so. But it had nothing to do with lines, but I could do final research on the candidates.

I vote a lot different than most do. I am finicky about party and if a Democrat tries to sneak in, I refuse to vote for them.

So you should not have any issue with others wanting to do the same.

I have no issues with voting by mail so long as the voters are correctly identified as citizens.

Here in Idaho I so seldom see a Mexican that I pretty much trust their system. In CA there are more mexicans that the Democrats tried to legalize.

There I voluntered at a food bank and saw their drivers licenses during the day as they signed in for free food.

That's my problem. If we're going to send ballots out to everybody, we should at least know these people actually live there OR if they're still alive.

Has anyone demonstrated that these votes are affecting elections or is it just another red herring like the terrible cost?

I will be applying for and receiving an absentee ballot for the fall. I see no reason I should risk my health or that of a poll worker (in my area mostly higher risk elderly) to vote.

I did the same in the primaries.

That's a good question. I cannot answer that. But it does seem like a waste of money. It doesn't take much effort to ask for an absentee ballot. You can call, email, or visit your local election office.

My grandmother has been dead for the past 11 years. Every election cycle, she gets a letter in the mail, informing her of her voting location. Why in the world would you send her an absentee ballot? It would be a waste of money.

Did nobody bother to inform the authorities, in 11 years, that she had passed and her ballots would no longer be required?

As I have said before on here, we have notified the authorities and wrote "deceased" on letters sent to her. NYS simply refuses to remove her name from the election registration roll.

I did not say your comments were false.

I stated you presented a false equivalence.

At this stage, I don't think it's going to matter. We'll see where we are in the fall; if there's no second wave, we might have a more manageable amount voting by mail.

There is a big difference between responding to specific requests from individual voters and sending out (unsolicited) ballots to all registered voters.

The act of registstering is an act of request, why should a person have tor spoke twice???

I'm for voting by mail.

They have had "early voting" here in Florida for a number of years now, and it is much better than everybody showing up on the same day and standing in line.

So you unlike many people in my family were not born at home and the only record of the birth was in the family Bible.

My father was litterally born in a barn, niether of my grandmother's and would have been legal to vote under there republican suppression laws.

Funny thing is both would vote republican if they could...

Same holds true for my great grandparents and my great great grandmother, all of who I knew and.none had birth certificates...

The Georgia primary election on Tuesday is a visual example of why the US needs mail balloting.

The Republicans there have made it extremely difficult to vote in person, believing that voter suppression is better for the GOP.

The Republican legislature in Georgia will also strenuously fight against mail-in balloting. Below is a preview of November 3, 2020.
