Trump says the U.S. will cut ties with World Health Organization

Perfect. So we can use other countries' actual experience tempered with guidance from CDC- as you've laid out, not much need for the W.H.O., who still says no need to wear masks, apparently? Awful. Like they're sucking up to anti maskers or something.

It is precisely why we should use WHO guidelines for new pandemics since they work within the United Nations system and all countries are partnered together. Can "America alone can fix" an outbreak of a new virus in Africa or in Greece or Denmark? Can the US coordinate with global communities to provide concise and accurate information as to how a new viral outbreak is going to manifest? Short answer is no, and the US just cut their own throat. The next pandemic is going to make Covid-19 look like the common cold.

Now we have more money to give them to improve

No you don't. The US debt has increased dramatically and cuts will have to be made

Why yes, the CDC can do all of that without the WHO.

Absolutely not. Trump has alienated every one of our partners and allies in Europe. Do you really think they give a damn about Trump and are willing to put themselves out helping him?

Who also did contact tracing lots of early testing and social distancing South Korea did everything but a lock down.

The WHO recommends against travel bans because countries tend to rely on that and not do the other recommended actions

Sounds like the W.H.O. has a pretty rough track record of marginal advice then. Cut off their extra funding, no problem here. It's already basically up for grabs for the highest bidder due to its funding structure, no need to play that game when world health is such a serious concern.

As the present administration continues to reduce the footprint of the United States of America in international affairs other than military forays, the Chinese and, quietly, the Europeans and Indians are filling the gaps. There are consequences. The trade agreement with the Chinese may no longer be to the advantage of a resurgent and powerful China. Bit by bit, the US dollar may find challengers in other currencies. The treasury notes of the US can lose their attractiveness.

Stay tuned ...

No, the United States can't fix an outbreak in Greece or Denmark, just like the W.H.O. can't fix an outbreak in Wuhan, China. So maybe the United States shouldn't be fronting 15% of the operating budget for an organization that had literally one job and messed it up so badly.

(To be clear, I support funding it to the assessed level and simply halting additional contributions)

Certainly not to trace, contain or mitigate the effects or transmission of contagious human viruses. And it's not as if their work on the 2009 H1N1 outbreak was perfect, and their work on the 2014 Ebola outbreak has been widely panned, and their delay in declaring a public health emergency and guidance during the Covid 19 outbreak is looking equally as poor.

I listen to our CDC who advises that everyone should be wearing a mask.

The W.H.O. says masks should be saved for healthcare workers, caretakers, and sick people — everyone else should just stay home

No, thats not what they said. The WHO said if youre healthy you should only wear a mask when dealing with someone with Covid

Why not finish the statement? The last part advises healthy people to stay home, not flock unprotected to drinking parties. Right wingers who spurn masks aren't evil, by the way. Rather, they're stupid, like sheep that can't be expected to protect themselves from unseen danger either..

Well thats a stupid comment unless you think all the people who flocked to the beaches in Maryland and New Jersey were all right wingers. The fact is, I dont feel the need to protect myself from something that is the product of your fear and ignorance

And all the right wing minions are already taking their advice over the CDC's. That is old advice that was based on other viruses and a desire to keep more mask available for medical personnel. Cover your face if you are in public and help stop the spread.

Uh, no. No one on the right is taking the advice of the WHO. People are reacting to the absence of the virus in their lives and ignoring the fear and ignorance of the fear mongering left.

Not their job. WHO is not the global health police with a huge army of doctors and investigators.

Seems you don't know what WHO is or what they do. So let's educate you.

WHO is a cooperation and coordination organisation with very limited authority and personnel. They use their limited resources and personnel in areas of the world that needs help due to lack of healthcare infrastructure. China ain't one of those countries. Ebola hit countries are and most of the response personel are contributed by members or NGOs, and WHO does the administrative coordination.

The key part of WHO is to coordinate and distribute information across the world. However the quality of this information is fully dependent on individual countries providing quality and truthful information to WHO to distribute it to other members.

Now in this case, WHO got informed about Covid-19 on the 31st of December and declared a global health emergency on the January 30th when other countries including the US started to declare cases. Yes it took another month to declare a pandemic, but WHO had declared the second highest alert already in January. And anyone could see that there was a problem by early February, so if you are telling me that countries needed a WHO pandemic declaration to do something, then frankly those countries leaders are idiots..oh wait that is Trump in a nut shell.

Now I would agree WHO should have declared a pandemic in mid February, but I also know the political tightrope UN organisations have to walk when it comes to the US. China was already in lockdown, so there is no reason not to declare a pandemic. The only reason not to declare a pandemic is the US, who thanks to Idiot Orange, was saying this is just the flu and all that bull****. It was only when WHO could no longer justify appeasing the Trump administration, that WHO declared a global pandemic...they basically had to wait for the US to admit it had infections being locally transmitted. Why? Because the US is WHOs biggest contributor.

Regardless, blaming WHO or China for the piss poor response of the Trump administration is nothing but a typical right wing deflection attempt that their followers fall for all the time. Trump had over 2 months warning about this and did nothing.

You can't see the virus and it is taking hold in the Red States. Just keep it up and you WILL see the results.

What you just said is that you support the WHO gathering all the information from all the countries under the UN coalition, process it all, filter it through their scientists and epidemiologists then hand all that data over to the US -- for free. Is that right?

WHO says there is no need for healthy people to wear face masks, days after the CDC told all Americans to cover their faces

On April 6, the World Health Organization released new guidance saying that healthy people don't need to wear face masks to prevent coronavirus spread.
Masks should be for the sick, their caretakers, and healthcare workers, the WHO guidance said.
Scientists and public-health organizations can't agree on the best face-mask protocol, and the WHO guidelines go against the CDC's face-mask recommendations.

The use of face masks on healthy people during the coronavirus pandemic has been a major point of contention and confusion among scientists and the public.

On Friday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that all Americans wear face masks when they are in public.

But new guidance from the World Health Organization released on Monday says healthy people don't need to wear face masks and that doing so won't provide added protection from the coronavirus.

There's some evidence that caretakers of infected people can protect their health by wearing masks, the WHO guidance said, but "there is currently no evidence that wearing a mask (whether medical or other types) by healthy persons in the wider community setting, including universal community masking, can prevent them from infection with respiratory viruses, including COVID-19."

WHO also said community masking could lead to a "false sense of security" and cause people to ignore other evidence-based measures like handwashing and self-isolation.

We are in agreement. W.H.O. dropped the ball on this, should have done more, sooner, and since it has no enforcement rights nor enough personnel, a little less funding will not slow its mission, which is to declare pandemics long after anyone paying attention already knew a pandemic was occurring. No harm in not funding that.

Nope. For merely $110 million dollars a year.

You cant be that dumb. Its not possible. First of all, Trump won 5 times as many counties as Clinton and .1% infection rate is significant only to whatever hackish dolt came up with this Table.

So we agree. The WHO is now the worlds leading anti-masker.

I doubt you'll find many liberals among them. Some, maybe most, probably are apolitical types doing what the right wingers do without being caught up in the idiocy of treating a pandemic as a political event.

And you still do not understand the following.

1) WHO did raise the alert level to the next highest rating. That alone should be enough to alert countries to be vigilant.. no? After all if there is a severe tornado warning in an area, you dont need a tornado alert before preparing to head to the shelter right?

2) WHO has a long history of bending to US pressure, which is why the pandemic trigger was pushed. Not because of China, as China does have any motive. The only country that does, is the US and its leader Trump who was at the time pushing the "it is just the flu" to " it is the Dems fault".

And the funding has already been met by private donors and other countries.. only one who is going to suffer is the US. WHO and its members wont have any reason to share information with the US.. And the private companies in the US and most likely many states will ignore the Trump administration and work with WHO regardless. The only ones who will love this, is of course Trumps supporters who are too ignorant to understand how the US works or let alone the world.
