Major League Baseball 2017

"All of them could end up like Albert Pujols, good to great for a while but not Babe Ruth in the end."

No one was Babe Ruth but maybe Ted Williams. Pujols is great, far better than good.

Go to baseball-reference dot come at look up Pujols.

Time will tell. For now, he's just one of the new bright shiny objects.

Cody Belinger is the 2nd Coming out West
Mike Trout and Bryce Harper are several years into being great
Judge is having a monster year, looks like the real deal, but has a long way to go.

All of them could end up like Albert Pujols, good to great for a while but not Babe Ruth in the end.

Cardinals not paying big bucks to keep Pujols was another wise move by a franchise with a tradition of sound baseball thinking.

He's certainly no better than Bonds, Aaron, Mays, A-Rod or, even, Jr (Griffey), had the last remained healthy. Pujols is more on par with Reggie Jackson, Mike Schmidt, and the Willie Stargells of the world. Good to great, but no threat to Babe Ruth.

Using Babe Ruth as a yardstick is always ridiculous.

I think we can say Pujols is an almost certain first ballot HOFer, and these other guys are, at this point, lucky if they are even considered for the HOF.

He is certainly on par with Bonds, Aaron, Griffey, and A-Rod. He far surpasses the Jacksons and the Schmidts.

Mays may be in my opinion the greatest all around position player in the history of the game.

I agree with that last sentence. Doubtful on the first two. Schmidt played third base. A much harder defensive gig than 1st.

Believe as you will. May, Ruth, and either Pujols or Gehrig or Foxx would be my first three picks. Then Williams with the other two of the three. Schmidt next. And so forth.

Who would you choose all time at catcher: i keep changing my mind among Rodriquez, Bench, Piazza, Dickey.

IMO, the order of greatest ever is Ruth, Bonds, Mays and Hank. Ted Williams probably fits in there somewhere, but the poor timing of the war derailing his career messes up any chance to use a similar yardstick on him as the others.

Bonds and the juice? I think Pujols shows as much if not more evidence of having juiced. In fact, he's a classic example of it like we saw with Pudge: rapid decline once thorough testing was put into place.

Bonds was a cheating fraud who belongs on no list. As for Pujols, there's no evidence whatsoever of PED's, and his decline has been statistically consistent with his age.

Ted Williams? I think his wartime service is to his credit.

There is no proof Bonds cheated either

As a person, absolutely. As a baseball player---his absence makes it hard to judge just how great he was.

Bonds admitted it.

Though Gio was outstanding last night, Baker pushed him too far at 112 pitches, IMO. I'd have pulled him after 7 as his next start is on 4 days rest at LAA.

Nats have multiple opportunities to jump the 5th starter over the next month, improving their record and locking up #2 against the NL Central. Walk the schedule out and you'll see what I'm saying.

The only game to makeup is the home Mets game and I haven't seen the date yet .

What?!

Baker pushing a pitcher too far?

Never would have imagined it.

Their bullpen is bad. Baker had Gio pitch to Votto in the 9th, lefty/lefty, then brought in Albers who loaded the bases before escaping with no runs.

Gio's pitch per inning splits weren't too stressful. 18 in the 1st and 23 in the 4th were the worst. MLB.com is awesome, as is this feeebaseballradio site I stumbled on to.

Gio and Max are a dynamic duo. I follow the Nats because they have a pitcher from Illinois.

I'm sure you remember Baker's handiwork with Wood and Pryor. Ross for the Nats just went on the disabled list and it doesn't look good. This was my concern with Maddon, after what I consider his history with Tampa Bay .

Bobby Valentine was on WFAN a few days ago. He mentioned that in his opinion the 'pitch count' stat is pretty useless when a pitcher throws 40 pitches in 1 inning and then 10 pitches the next and the manager just looks at 50 pitches total. Obviously the 40 pitch inning is much more stressful on the pitcher's arm and that should be taken into account then just looking at the 50 pitch total stat.

IDK, it's epidemic now. Ross needs TJ surgery. Pineda of the Yanks needs TJ. I don't know what the answer is anymore.

BOS just took Sale out after 7.2 innings and 118 pitches, but didn't go over 22 pitches in any inning. As someone who watched Sale for many years, I'm surprised his arm hasn't fallen off with his style.

The White Sox unloaded Sale, Quintana and Eaton in their prime, much as Branch Rickey did with Dodgers. We're pretty excited about the future. Good to see you back.

I point to 46-yo pitcher Nolan Ryan as the way to go, strong legs and throw with your body .

Yeah, I was talking baseball with someone on the Cruise and of course the Tommy John epidemic came up. He was a Yankee fan who just heard Pineda needed TJ surgery. Anyway we talked and talked how old time pitchers threw 150 pitches a game and they didn't seem to have the arm problems the pitchers today have. Of course Nolan Ryan came up. We decided Ryan was simply a freak of nature. There's no way to describe or explain how he threw near 100mph for decades and never seemed to have arm problems.

Scherzer with 62 pitches after 3 innings---19, 18, 25--and 8 Ks. While this one may have 20 Ks written all over it, it also has 120+ pitches .

Scherzer has been quoted saying 120 is both his standard and his limit.

I was surprised they took him out after only 93 pitches, though glad. His first 3 innings were stressful. Hope they save some runs for Tanner tomorrow.

They've got 5 off-days through August 21. Old school managers like Scioscia have been known to jump their 5th starter, especially with the unproven Turner.

What could be their biggest problem is playing all year without pressure, compared to their likely opponent the NL Central winner.

If they're going to only use 3 starters in the playoffs, as compared to 4 last year, I'm hoping they give Tanner time in the BP in September. I was happy with his 5 innings in relief against the Braves, who are playing great ball, only 7 games behind the Rockies who lost again tonight, Braves winning again tonight against AZ.

I don't agree with the WC winner playing a team in their division in the next round, as AZ/COL would right now.

What a mess that bullpen is--give up 7 runs with a 10-0 lead .

Austin Adams had the worst MLB debut ever, and Trevor Gott was worse.

Getting 96.5 FM from Harrisburg on feeebaseballradio. E. Jackson to start on Tuesday. Trade with Oakland for relievers Madson and Doolittle for Treinen, Luzardo and Neuse .
