Major League Baseball 2017

Every time I hear an umpire talk about "my" strike zone I become more convinced.

Good hitters learn and know each Umps 'strike zone'. I hear Keith Hernandez talk about that all the time. The fans like you and me get PO'ed when we see an Ump call a bad game, but the players know what to expect from each Ump. I think it bothers us more that it bothers the players.

What would he do? Plays at the plate would/could be video calls. You're taking all of the human element out of the game.

Again I can see a certain amount of appeals for balls and strikes. But not every pitch.

He would call plays at the plate the same way the other umpires call plays on the bases. Blocking the plate, for example, would require a human umpire.

Nats' last hitter the other night was called out on an obvious outside ball. Next day Nats got the benefit of what can only be called a "make-up call." Shouldn't happen.

Why? Play at the plate during Monday's night Nats/Mets game the Mets appealed if Wieiters was blocking the plate. Not the call, the Met runner was out by a mile.

Videos would show out calls on the bases, blocking the plate, everything.

If they are going to have instant balls and strikes calls with a machine, they can have instant calls at the bases and home plate too.

The owners would probably love it, it will be cheaper. But I don't see it.

Umpire's judgment of intent.

Been going on forever though Jack. And not just in baseball. All sports have 'make-up calls'. Basketball is, IMO, 10 times worse. Even football is really bad. A Defensive back gets away with holding on 1st down, we know damn well if he breathes on a receiver on 2nd down he's going to get called for a penalty.

There's a human element in all sports, that's part what makes them popular. I don't want baseball to lose that element.

MLB is the only sport I can find that has extensive ratings on home plate umpires in regards to sports betting. One ump is 1-11 on over/unders this year. (from donbest.com) Covers has the best going back to last century but they've gone to log in.

Early odds tomorrow have deGrom favored -109/-101 with an o/u of 9 u-25. Tomorrows ump, Libka, doesn't have a book that I've found yet so he could be a recent call-up. Someone's making phone calls on him.

IIRC, umpire crews aren't released before the first game of a series. Bettors only get about 5 minutes or so to factor in the ump from their spotters, unless they have inside info .

Here we go with the Dbacks and the Dodgers.

“I got a plan,” Baker added. “It might not make much sense to a lot of people. But I’ve got a plan.”

Actually, the whole Nationals organization does. That’s how, with the ballpark full on the Fourth, you can subtract six starters and still whip the Mets by seven runs.

Unfair. The Mets 2 best hitters weren't in the game. Cespedes and Conforto. The Nats 2 best hitters, Murphy and Harper were.

When the year start all I heard was how are the Mets going to juggle 5 outfielders. Here we are on the 4th of July and the Mets had ONE of those 5 starting(Bruce) because the other 4 are hurt. They had TJ Rivera playing Left Field. 1st time he ever played the outfield.

Injuries are never an excuse. All teams have them, but this year the Karma of 2015 when the Mets had few injuries is catching up with them.

Baseball isn't a bettors game. I hear you, but baseball doesn't have the bettors following that football and basketball have. And that Call-up Ump has a minor league book on him that I'm sure all teams have. The teams know what to expect.

I'm cruising in the Caribbean for the next 2 weeks. I'm guessing by the time I come back the Mets will be REALLY dead in the water. Wifi on these ships is sketchy as hell, so I have no idea if I will be able to keep up with baseball, or chat with you guys here about baseball.

I've bought the 'wifi package' before on these cruises, and they were pretty useless. I bought it again because I am stupid and a gluten for punishment. But hey, maybe the 21st Century has finally caught up with these ships and I can keep in touch with the outside world, DP and MLB.

Stay Cool people. See you on the flip side.

And the Dodgers are out to a 1-0 lead, and Grandal leads off the bottom of the second with a double to left. Kershaw has walked one, struck out two, and allowed no hits.

Fair enough. The point of the article was to praise the Nats' brain trust.

Im taking a cruise at the end of July and I was wondering about that wifi package, so youre saying its a bad deal?

No, I don't know if it is a bad deal, yet. I'll find out in about 12 hours. Our last cruise was 3 years ago, the Wifi on that ship sucked. But now, IDK. I read reviews and some say the Wifi is pretty good, others say it still sucks.

If you hear from me over the next few days, then you know it's good. if not, then it still sucks. :) Thursday Night/Friday Morning I'll be all unpacked and drinking by then, and I'll be checking my fantasy baseball and DP. I'll let you know.

Wifi works good. Good coverage and speed. I even called home using WiFi (Textnow). Worked good. So far. Lol. It's only Day 2.

Awesome, I'll have to give it a try when I take my cruise then

Arizona better get the pool ready.

That Grandal RBI was the only run of the game, period.

The Blue comes back in the bottom of the 9th last night to win.

The Blue and the stros are playing 667 baseball: they are awesome.

Final weekend before the All Star game, call it halftime.

Surprises:
1. Orioles. I would have expected them to compete in the AL East. They are in last place, 8.5 behind the BoSox.
2. Astros. I never expected that they would be 15.5 games in front of their nearest rival half-way through the season.
3. Brewers. Honestly, who thought anyone but the Cubs would be leading the NL Central by 4.5 at the break?

Meh, but kind of cool:
1. Dusty Baker once again is leading a team to a division title (odds are he'll lose in the playoffs again too).
2. Cleveland, KC and the Twins are all within a game and a half of each other.
3. Yanks are in second, but 3.5 out and not likely to close the gap

Why Baseball sucks:
1. See number three in section two above. Except for the Al Central, that is the closest race.
2. 7 teams are at least 15 games out; 9 teams are at least 10 out, and a whopping 19 teams are 5 games behind or more
3. Unless you are a fan of the Dodgers, Sahx, Astros or Nationals, or, if you do not live in the upper half of the Midwest, you're probably already checking out your favorite football team's schedule.

People who are unhappy with the lay of the land simply need to realize that America loves winners, so those unhappy people need to choose new teams to follow. I told my son that, and he said, ". . . but . . . but . . . but . . . Atlanta."
