If I were a manager nowadays, my closer can't hit 90mph, but has the most wicked slider, curveball and a 75mph off-speed pitch. Batters would screw themselves into the ground swinging at that.

Nah. Like the man said, you can't coach speed. A fastballer can be taught off-speed. A junk thrower can't get fast.

I wonder how many talented young arms are passed up for the chuck-it-and-pray guy who can throw faster than anyone else?

I'm not sure even the best hitters can can consistently catch up with a 101 or 102 MPH heater.
That sucker will go by you so fast it'll make your head spin.

Even if you do, are you gonna foul it off, hit it for a blooper or hit a homerun??
My guess is you'll foul off a dozen or so before you can even connect with a bloop single
