Major League Baseball 2017

Imagine being a Mets or Nats fan living on the West Coast. And getting up this morning, turning the TV on at 8am and watching a baseball game LIVE...:)

11am start today. I remember noon starts, 11:45 and 11:55am starts. But never 11AM. Today I might have to break my no alcohol until Noon rule. It's hot, the 4th and a baseball game on at 11!!! I might have to start early.

Happy 4th.

In my little home town, long ago, Fourth of July baseball and softball would start at 10:00AM and run continuously until it was time for the fireworks.

I believe the Red Sox annually have one game that starts at 11:00, on the day of the Boston Marathon.

That guy is widely known as one of the worst umpires in MLB. Poor performance is not supposed to get rewarded.

When I played Fast Pitch softball we'd play in tournaments that started 8-9 in the morning. And you'd play all day until you lost.

Ah to be young again.

Both teams have awful bullpens. The difference is the Nats have wiggle room to figure it out. The Mets don't. Mets got to go 50-30 over the last 80 games to even have a chance for the playoffs. The Starting pitching is coming around. Until the last few days their line-up has been damn good. Having Cespedes, Conforto and Granderson out now is bad. But if they get healthy and hit they will score runs. But their bullpen is terrible so even if the Starting pitching and line-up does well they can't go 50-30 with that bullpen.

Too much inconsistency even among "good" umpires. I want to see electronic balls & strikes.

Not going to happen. People constantly bitch and moan about the replay rule. The last thing MLB will do is turn over more of the game to electronics and the Umps in Chelsea.

Looked like Cespedes maybe reinjured himself going after Raburn's blooper last night.

I think it would speed up the game. Automatic calls; no appeal.

Double elimination with a Death March through the losers' bracket?

Yeah, most tournaments were like that. Some were 1 and done.

Good times though. I liked playing and watching fast pitch back in the day. But it's dead now, the pitchers just got too damn good.

I can't see anything being turned over to the machines without an appeal.

I watch a million baseball games, I get very frustrated at some of the balls and strikes calls. As I said before IMO the Umps this year are squeezing the pitchers. But still, I don't want a computer calling balls and strikes.

I may not have been clear enough. Balls & strikes 100% called electronically. No umpire role.

I do. It's been very good for tennis. Computer balls & strikes would create the same strike zone for every game.

No, I understand what you are saying. But I don't see them turning it all over to the machines. There will still be some 'human' control and appeals.

And honestly I doubt the players Union would go for it.

I can see a certain amount of appeals to Ump balls and strikes calls. Maybe 3-5 a game?

But a machine calling all the balls and strikes. I don't see it.

Every time I hear an umpire talk about "my" strike zone I become more convinced.

There would still be a home plate umpire, but he would not call balls & strikes.

What would he do? Plays at the plate would/could be video calls. You're taking all of the human element out of the game.

Again I can see a certain amount of appeals for balls and strikes. But not every pitch.
