Major League Baseball 2017

The inside is fair game. Middle of the batter's box, not so much.

Batter's Box is 6" off the plate. OK, allow the pitcher 12" inside the BB for errant inside pitches. Any pitch that approaches being 2 feet off the plate, in the direction of the hitter--fast balls are especially suspect since they are easy to control--results in an automatic ejection, especially if it hits the batter.

Sorry, but you'll never persuade me. It's an unfair burden on pitchers.

They're pros though, supposed to know what they're doing. A fastball that hits the batter, eject the pitcher. A mistake? Tough luck.

Watch pitchers get really good at not hitting batters with fastballs all of a sudden.

lol...and being intentionally beaned by a 97 mph fastball is not?

That's a professional risk.

I guess it will take that one day a batter brings his bat along when he charges the mound. I certainly would.

Not Major League, but that has already happened in professional baseball, by Jose Offerman, a former Major Leaguer.

IMO, if this was the threat a pitcher faced every time he chucks one at a hitter...no one would be chucking one at hitters.

It did happen in the majors once.....

On Aug. 22, 1965, a season-high crowd of 42,807 packed Candlestick Park for a key National League matchup between baseball's biggest rivals. With two future Hall of Famers on the mound, it promised to be a memorable afternoon.

It certainly was, but not because the San Francisco Giants beat the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 or because of the pitching performances by Sandy Koufax and Juan Marichal. And not because the game featured four future Hall of Famers (the two aces along with the Giants' Willie Mays and Willie McCovey) and four members of the that year's NL All-Star team (Dodgers shortstop Maury Wills, Koufax, Mays and Marichal).

The contest is still remembered for arguably the ugliest moment in MLB history. In the bottom of the third inning, Marichal infamously clubbed Dodgers catcher John Roseboro over the head with a bat, an action never seen before or again on a major league field.

A bat is no more of a weapon than a 95 mph baseball. A pitcher who throws at batters should be made to worry that said batter just might be coming out there to break his arm with a bat.

I think the problem with a bat is it is a more than 1 hit weapon, and the batter wielding a bat can use it against more that 1 opponent. A thrown ball is a 1 time thing against 1 player, the bat is not.

I'll never forget the game I went to in 1984 where, during an incredibly long fight on the field, Mario Soto went after a fan with a bat. He made it to the top of the dugout and got pulled back in by teammates. (About 21 min in to the video).

The entire fight ran in stages and went on for about a half hour.

I remember it well...
