US Women's team crowned world champion after 2-0 win over the Netherlands

And I am talking about professional sports where people pay money to be entertained. It doesn't matter one iota what an athletes thinks their "rights" are (it's not the government telling them to can it anyway), the fans want to watch the sport and escape the BS of every day life, when a narcissistic athlete decides to smear their politics all over a game it ruins the experience for the fans and turns fans of the same team against one another. It's bad for he fans, the team and the business.

Rapinoe's bold defiance of authority is inspiring and good for the game, especially as women become more aggressive and competitive in sports. Her personal attitude reflected the championship spirit of the team.

Not really. General American pride is fine, but stay out of the partisan crap, one side or the other will hate you for it, and sports, especially international sports, is supposed to be uniting for a country, not dividing.

So is the leader of the country!

They pulled this same **** on Bush. Remember the Dixie chicks?

Psh, no it doesn't. Please. She is a good athlete, but she is also an asshole. Trying to credit her assholery for the success of the Womens team just demeans the actual grueling work that these women did that had nothing to do with Rapinoe's mouth.

Haters gonna hate.

Well, the Dixie Chicks are a good example of why you keep politics out of entertainment... it's for the good of the performers as much as the enjoyment of the fans... I mean, some might say the two are directly connected!

That's part of the dynasty. There have, since its inception, been 8 Women's World Cups. The US has won 4, including that one, and finished at least third every Cup.

If an NFL team wins the Superbowl 4 out of 8 years, and makes their Conference Championship game the other 4 years, that's a dynasty.

It's perhaps the greatest World Cup dynasty of all time including men.

However, for a competition that started in 1991 and is held only once every 4 years its not exactly a "beacon" - its notable among women's soccer fans, but then most of the US doesn't care all that much about records in soccer.

And the story line isn't even that compelling; a team expected to win, peppered with professionals who arrogantly runs up the score on small fry looking like bullies, and wins against little Netherlands. Ho hum.

However, the 1999 team caught the imagination of the nation. A US team that didn't exactly know how good it was, who had been beaten by China previously, faced a methodical communist state juggernaut, a bunch of "Red" Chinese. Personalities like Mia Hamm, an all American girl next door cutie, captured people's imagination. In an extremely tense and hard fought game (with some miracle saves by our goalie and defense) it went to a final penalty shoutout. The shootout ended 5-4 with Brandi Chastain shooting the last, and winning shot.

That tournament was considered a "watershed moment" for women's sports in the U.S.. This game was a satisfying moment, but nothing will beat the 1999 win...at least not yet.

The US women's team has a big fan base.

It's a little smaller after this Cup.

And a hater. She used her platform to hate.

Poor baby, if she hated Obama you would make her a saint.

Freedom of speech and dissent are American values, even when you don't agree.

I love it when conservatives express their frustration when some people mix politics and entertainment or sports, but see no problem when others mix religion and politics.

BS. They're bigger than ever. They transcended the sport. We've seen the type hating on them.

A woman with an opinion, and a gay one! Lordy me.

It has nothing to do with either of those. There are plenty of opinionated lesbians on women's sports teams who don't make it about them, and don't make it about hate. Rapinoe isn't one of them.

Crybaby BS. Let women and gays speak.

LOL. You acting like a 12 year old only helps prove my point. Had she been more diplomatic, like every other woman on that team, we could all be sharing the win without the politics. She took that uniting moment and made it an us versus them moment. She is a great athlete, and an asshole.

LOL. I never said they couldn't. All I said is don't be a divisive asshole and don't make the event a platform for partisan politics..

It's too much to ask from your side of the aisle these days, I realize.

Only because nobody asks them if they will accept an invitation by Trump. Ask them the same question first, and wait for the results...

If someone doesn't say what you like, you throw a fit, call them names and claim they ruined everything. Just get over it. People are gonna say things you don't like, even athletes. We're not going fascist to protect your feelings.

First soccer I've watched in years.

Men are playing now for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Basically, it's a tournament of all of North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Championship game for that tournament. So we could have a CONCACAF Mens win and a World Cup Womens win for USA.

62 minutes in 0-0 right now.

Tempting.

I love how conservatives are now mad that an American team won the world cup, only because a few of the players called out Der Leader as a jackass.
