I don't think he does want a war with Iran. With Iran, he wants to look tough ... and he wants to undo Obama's success in helping Iran move toward responsible world citizenship ... but he doesn't want war. He's not sure what to do now that he's made them so desperate that they may be willing to risk war because they have little left to lose. One of his bragging points is decreasing our international involvement, especially military involvement. If we go to war with Iran, that blows up his talking point and he seems quite aware of the negative significance of that.

But a civil war excites his base to an almost orgasmic degree. He is quite aware of that also. So he's gleefully pushing in that direction.

I think he wants both. A war with Iran to please his puppeteer Bibi, and a civil war to" excite" those in his base who are just as racist as he is. His bragging and talking points are meaningless and nonsensical, how can they be with someone so flighty that he changes his statements every hour. I don't think he's smart enough to be aware of anything in the real world.
