Trump signs executive orders on coronavirus economic relief

He just got a lot of votes with this.

All real conservatives should not vote for him. Borrowing more money we don't have.

Tea party must be livid.

Perhaps, instead of forking over the $100/wk for everyone on unemployment, the states will do things to get them back to work.

What jobs?

...and what would that be? ..... we just lost 15% of our economy (travel and entertainment) that is not coming back until the virus is under control (then there will be additional contraction in mainline businesses that serve that market, like hotel construction and airplane manufacture and banks and advertising agencies that serve that industry, etc.....)

The problem with Republicans is they just can't seem to grasp the problem. They seem to think they can just deny the problem exists and/or will it away. Its the party of fantasy.

Sure. I always knew the Constitution was only toilet paper. I'm happy to see conservatives finally admit it.

I'm happy to see Trump doing what Democrats do. Biden Buh Bye

He also said he would cut the taxes that fund SS and Medicare if re-elected, good grief the guy is a complete idiot.

Legal battle to follow, too much stepping over his authority. Not allowed with him and not with any President.

But in the meantime, it goes forward unless a court takes a stand and stays it for being unconstitutional. And what Democrat wants to stop an EO that gives voters all kinds of economic relief three months before a Presidential election? This may fly. But it is dead wrong.

No, he didn't.

He cut unemployment benefit and is defunding Social Security and Medicare in the middle of a pandemic, because he refuses to be the "great deal maker" he promised he'd be.

You're out of touch with reality, if you think you'll get today's Dems to vote Trump. Not going to happen. We'll take his money, though. Until we can throw his ass in the pokey.

Wake up Chomsky. You're having a bad dream....a nightmare that Trump wins.

Oh WAIT! It's not a nightmare. It's REAL!! ARRRGGGHHH

He was preaching to the choir alright. It sure won't change the seniors minds in Florida though. They just want to live.

“Joe Biden and the Democrats don’t want to defund Social Security and Medicare but I do” is electoral gold. For Biden.

Let's be honest. He will say the executive order doesn't say that. Yesterday the man said he had to take the step to issue an executive order to give people with pre-existing conditions protections from healthcare discrimination, which everybody knows the ACA already does and everybody also knows that his lawyers are continuing to tell the Supreme Court that everything about the ACA, including protections for those with pre-existing conditions, is unconstitutional. You can't make up that level of bull****tery.

Right now there's two kinds of people in the world: those that are fine with incoherent bull**** and want more of it and those that want it to stop. And right now, the former are between 38-40% of the country.

When one discovers all the crap the Democrats were trying to pass through that had nothing to do with this pandemic, most voters would be disgusted because they learn that the Democrats are not really interested in those who are really hurting. The bill is thousands of pages long and the crap tucked in between the pages is disgusting. Some of the **** they had in that bill passed in the House included no voter ID needed, no signature verification, mail in voting in all states, and government assistance to illegals.

Trump bucked people in his own party to sign what was in those 4 EO's because they directly help the people in need at this time. There is talk that the Dems are going to challenge his EO's in court. Let them because if they do and it holds up the needed assistance Trump is willing to offer, then they will pay the consequences.
First of all, the UI is down 50% and he only has funds for about a month. The eviction order isn't really an order, but a recommendation to HUD to "consider" stopping evictions, which means many of not most eviction will go forward, and the payroll taxes are only DEFERRED, meaning they will still have to be paid later.

People know that most Republicans didn't even want a second stimulus, and the WH and Senate R's sat on their asses, while telling the little guy to pick himself up by his bootstraps, as if everyone is being lazy.

The Dems passed their bill three and half months ago. The Republicans had forever to come up with their own version, but they called the people suffering on hard times because of the pandemic lazy, and did nothing to help them, and then their states spun out of control with COVID and stalled the recovery.

They GOP is royally ****ED come November without a miracle.

There are always going to be that 35% who are too stupid to understand any of that.

Yup.

38-43% of the country is willing to vote this POS back in, while the other 53-57% are just done with him, and are ready to vote him today. Just as no matter what happens the former group are not changing their minds, the latter group of people that want Trump gone are not changing their minds either.

That is why I think Biden is much better positioned to win than Clinton. Public opinion is baked in much more clearly this time, with Trump being seen as the politician that the broader public has contempt for and can't stand the thought of holding the WH this time, not his opponent.

That's how I see the situation anyways.

And another 8% too morally bankrupt to care.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump signed executive orders Saturday for coronavirus economic relief, upending negotiations with Congress after lawmakers failed to reach a deal on Friday.

The executive orders establish a payroll tax holiday through the end of the year for Americans earning less than $100,000 a year.

They also defer student loan payments through the end of the year; continue eviction moratoriums; and extend enhanced unemployment benefits that expired last week, but at a reduced level of $400 instead of the prior $600.

"If I'm victorious on November 3rd, I plan to forgive these taxes and make permanent cuts to the payroll tax," Trump said. "Joe Biden and the Democrats may not want that, they don't want that."

Looks like Trump got tired of Congress not getting anything done....he bypassed them
The problem is that he has no lawful authority to do any of this. Even the payroll tax "holiday" is really just a deferral, and the bill will come due unless Congress actually passes a tax relief bill. At least as far as the holiday is concerned, what Trump should've done, if he really wanted to stick it to Democrats, is have the Treasury Secretary declare via memo a policy of "prosecutorial discretion" that states payroll tax evasion won't be punished or pursued for the next six months. Then, any subsequent administration would be unable to reverse the policy or collect back taxes because of the reliance interests of the people who didn't pay.

See the recent Supreme Court opinion on DACA for supporting precedent.

A lot of his supporters have Stockholm syndrome or battered wife syndrome. Do not underestimate the power an abuser has over his victims.

He is the modern-day Caligula.

This is how you win an election. Not only did Trump just buy a lot of votes, but he did it in a way that made him look like he cares more about the people then Congress does, buying him even more votes.

This is how you show you're not a deal maker, and suck at trying.

In four or five weeks he'll run out of funds for the 50% reduction in unemployment he just made, and there will be evictions in the meantime because his order doesn't actually mandate that they don't go forward.

Then what? That's right, he's back to needing a deal again, with what little he put out there running out fast. And it will be happening at the beginning of early voting ballots being sent out and baked in.

So the bet is:
  • Run out of funds for unemployment enhancement payments of $400, by September 12th, 2020;
  • 50% unemployment by September 12th, 2020;
You're saying both those will happen, I am saying neither of those will happen. If one item happens and the other does not, the bet is a draw. If Congress passes legislation that replaces or halts the actions of any of these 4 Executive orders exicute, the bet is off.

Loser makes a 1 year Silver Donation in the winner's name.

Deal?

“The Dems are obstructing Trump’s effort to give them fewer benefits than the Dems already passed” is dumb positioning.

Right! House Democrats passed a bill specifically designed to deal with this mess two and a half months ago. The Trump administration and Senate Republicans had plenty of time to propose an alternative. Instead, they didn’t even focus on the issue until days before the benefits ended. And even now they’re refusing to offer anything that might significantly alleviate workers’ plight.

Trump unilateral action, if unchallenged, cuts benefits by a third.
