Trump advocates for school reopenings: 'This thing is going away' | TheHill

President Trump on Wednesday continued to push for schools to physically reopen in the fall, asserting that the novel coronavirus is “going away.”

“My view is the schools should open. This thing is going away,” Trump said on “Fox & Friends” in a phone interview Wednesday morning, referring to the coronavirus. “It will go away like things go away and my view is that schools should be open.”

Cases have been falling over the past two weeks in some states that had experienced heavy outbreaks this summer, such as Florida, Texas and Arizona.

Florida, as one example, recorded more than 60,000 cases of the coronavirus last week. It is one of 24 states that recorded at least 5,000 cases last week. Texas recorded more than 57,000 cases, and Arizona recorded more than 16,000.

Cases also were rising last week in 21 other states.

Trump went on to assert falsely that children are “almost immune” from COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, adding that they have stronger immune systems than older individuals do with respect to the virus.

This guy is delusional, fixated on getting reelected.

What scientific basis has he for making this 'going away' claim? Did he study virology at Wharton?

I thought we were supposed to listen to Fauci. Fauci said schools can and should open with proper safety precautions.

But Fauci has never stated that the virus is 'going away.'

okay, i have THREE relatives who are high school teachers in the South. all hardcore Trump supporters.

all have/have had medical/preexisting conditions.

i guess we're gonna see if this is gonna touch my family directly (it's already killed some friends). i'd be shocked if they make it through this without becoming infected.

Sorry to tell you this, but they can likely kiss their donkeys goodbye. The chips are stacked too high for them.

You don't think it's ever "going away" for all practical purposes? So should we stay locked-down forever? Never open schools?

I thought we were supposed to listen to Fauci. Fauci said schools can and should open with proper safety precautions.

Dr. Fauci stated that every school district is different. Some can open physically as long as they follow the mask/distancing guidelines. Other schools will have to remote learn until the infectious loads in their county go down. Other schools may have to use a hybrid scheme- 50% physical and 50% remote for a while. At no time did Fauci state that all schools must now open physically 100%.

I wish them all the best.

Then they should retire. Education is an essential function of our society. We need teachers willing to be 'heroes' not cowards.

Who is locked down? Where do you live?

"Those 15 will go down to almost nothing. It will go away" - Donald Trump in mid-March.

160,000 US dead later, Trump is still telling us it will "go away".

That's all fine and well but if you're going to be brave, be smart. Jumping into a reopening without precautions can be self defeating if you end up with a bunch of infected teachers who then have to go into quarantine. The reopening measures will depend on the conditions in any particular school district and the logistical issues they'll have to deal with in adhering to guidelines. Crowded schools are going to be a potential problem, while those with smaller amounts of students could manage that better.

That and the kids picking it up at school and taking home to parents who then go to work and spread it to their coworkers who give it to their kids in other schools who then take it home to their parents............................

Yeah, there's a lot to figure out. This kind of thing is logistically complex and we have the misfortune of having leadership that can't be bothered with the details. There's hope in that at the local level you'll have smarter people sorting the problems out.

When did Trump say every single school should open no matter what?

Most places are locked down to one degree or another. Where I live, for example, restaurants are only allowed to have outdoor dining (and not all restaurants have outdoor seating areas), bars and nightclubs are closed entirely, and schools are not opening up normally. Live audience events are shut down. Hair salons are shut down.

In CA, "All individuals living in the State of California are currently ordered to stay home or at their place of residence, except for permitted work, local shopping or other permitted errands, or as otherwise authorized (including in the Questions & Answers below)."

So now will you answer my question instead of dodging it?

Why did I know it would come down your local bars being closed. Clue: we opened the bars here in Texas and the cases shot through the roof, they are now closed again.

Oh, maybe when he said all schools need to reopen for the fall and any that don't are in danger of losing their funding?

Dead heroes are not useful

More than 200 employees have been barred from work in Georgia’s largest school district. A high school in Indiana had to shift to online learning after just two days. And students in Mississippi were forced to quarantine after classmates tested positive for the coronavirus during the first week of classes.

The new academic year is off to a chaotic start as schools open in some parts of the country while infections continue to rage. Already in the South and the Midwest, students and teachers have brought the virus to school with them, triggering quarantines, delayed openings and temporary shutdowns as positive tests roll in.

Of interest to me will be a school system's protocol when a single student is found to test positive for the virus. One question to ask of such procedures is how good is the contact tracing system within the school? There are others.

Regards, stay safe 'n well. Remember the Big 3: masks, hand washing and physical distancing.

My 3 relatives need the money (although I'm not sure how that works for them, all 3 in different school districts in 2 states).

And if their Facebook posts are any indication they still think this thing is a hoax. But I can't get a good read on one of the three.

The other two definitely think they're going back to school and nothing will happen. One (male) had a heart attack just last year.

Look at those republicans promoting public schools reopening because they're critical.

It's a bit comical isn't it?

Sound like you are volunteering to be a teacher.

I agree education is an essential function of American society. The challenge is how to keep all that are involved in teaching safe. That includes students, teachers, and administrators. Do you have any constructive ideas of how to do that?

Why did you know WHAT would come down to bars being closed? The only thing that's coming down to bars, apparently, is your cherry-picking of what I said, and ignoring the context in which I said it. Do you think bars should remain closed forever, since the virus is not going away? What about schools, or all the other places I listed that are closed or severely limited?

Oh, maybe when he said all schools need to reopen for the fall and any that don't are in danger of losing their funding?

You'll have to forgive me if I don't trust your interpretation of what Trump actually said, given your recent demonstration of a willingness to quote people out of context. What did he say, exactly?
