The 2018 Major Leage Baseball Thread

I just watched/listened to all 5 of the Mets/Phillies series.

The Phillies are NOT a playoff team.. Their defense is terrible, and their starters have the 4th best ERA in the NL, but from what I saw except for Nola their starting pitching isn't that great. But then the Braves have lost 4 in a row, and the Nats are still sleep walking. In the last 10 games the Mets are the only team in the NL East with a winning record. No one wants the division, and it's such an embarrassment I can't really blame them.

IMO there's not a single team in the NL East that should be in the playoffs. lol... What a putrid division.

  • Perspective
After too many self-inflicted wounds, this Nationals season can probably be pronounced dead
The Nationals have simply made too many mistakes to stay in the NL East race, and Sunday's embarassing defeat against the last-place Marlins feels like the final blow.

Being a Mets fan what's really sad is with the Mets talent this should have been an easy year to win the NL East for them. And I'm sure you believe the same with the Nats.

But the Mets won FIVE games in the whole month of June. FIVE in 30 days. No one can recover from that. From May to July 1st the Mets offense wasn't just bad, it was historically bad. I can go on and on but this one stat says it all. In 10 straight starts by deGrom in May and June he had an ERA of 0.83... Under 1 run a game, and in those 10 games the Mets were 2-8. That's almost impossible. Pitcher gives up 1 run a game and the team was 2-8. Like I said, historically bad.

The Nats were on life support but now we just have to stop abusing the corps and call time of death:(
Martinez needs to go and they have to get a deeper reserve of relief pitchers.
We're lost without Dr. Doo...

Meanwhile, the Cubs score one run per game the last four games, and STILL manage to split a series with the Pirates.

The Cubs have the best record in the NL, but don’t seem to have gotten ‘good’ yet, all while missing their best hitter, big time free agent starter, and stellar closer.

They’re storing up their good stuff for the postseason.

I think the Nats have to stop blaming the manager(s)... I don't know what the answer is, but changing the manager constantly hasn't done a damn thing.

Never should have let Dusty go. I really don't think he would have made as many bad decisions which led to blowing lead after lead in the 8th and 9th innings.
That's were it's all going to hell in a hand basket lately.
The Nats were something like 20 games ahead this time last year. Now' they're 6 or so games out of the wild card.

That's **** results.

I agree. They should have kept Dusty. Because IMO the Nats biggest hole in their team over the past few years has been the BP. I think it was 2 YEARS ago me and Jack discussed right here on this site how bad the Mets and Nats BP were. And 2 years later little has changed with either teams BP.

But the problem with bullpens is most of the time they are IMPOSSIBLE to fix.

We are unanimous they should have kept Dusty.
Nats made a serious effort to address the BP but injuries, clubhouse problems (Kintzler) and poor on-field deportment (Kelly) created a weakness where there should have been a strength. The starting pitching, usually a strength, became a weakness as well. I look for a revamped rotation next year.
Two bright spots: Scherzer remains Scherzer, and Juan Soto is a new star.

Huge Dusty fan here. Reds haven't been the same since they let him go.

Scherzer has the love of the game and reminds me of Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams. He embodies the game.
Juan's in a bit of a slump, but I love how his exuberance shines out his eyes and he has so much promise. A real asset to the organization.

A's are almost caught up with Houston. I would not have seen that coming.
Cubs see Cardinals coming on strong in their rearview, but they look to be safe from the Brewer threat.

The rest of the NL:
East--no one wants to win that division. ATL is holding on by losing four straight and watching neither the Phillies or Nats win many more.

West: Dodgers are sliding as the Rockies soar. Diamondbacks are hanging on though, for now.

Back to the AL:
Boston hasn't skipped a beat at all. 700-ball for their last ten and the season.
Cleveland coasting.

I still like Houston to win the West, playing the Sahx in the ALCS.
In the NL it's up for grabs. Cubs probably have the edge over everyone else.

Cardinals at Cubs for three to close the season.

Let's talk bad teams.

AL:
Texas seems to be the best of the worst. 56 wins with only a -55 run differential. Compare that to the Royals: 38 wins, -217 R/D. Same division, White Sox and Tigers aren't that much better. In fact, Texas, were they to be in the Central, would be a solid third place team. In the East, the Orioles are just bad, with even fewer wins than KC.

NL:
The numbers aren't as bad, with all the last place teams all having 50 wins (SD has 49, close enough), but that is probably just a reflection on how bad the NL is up on top.

A team projected to win 100+ games get's no mention on your commentary lol

The Tanks are ten games out. They have virtually zero chance to compete for the division.

Wild Card teams aren't a concern yet.

They have the second best record in baseball with tons of injuries.

So what? Read my post again. There is a specific theme there. Your Tanks do not fall into it.

Murphy to the Cubs. Adams to the Cardinals. Nats have run up the white flag.
This will be an interesting off season.

Supposedly Harper's been claimed by an 'unknown' team. Of course IIRC the Nats and the claiming team only have 48 hours to work out a deal, so that will be pretty complicated unless the Nats really, really want to move him. Salary dump?

Adams was shipped for cash, and Rizzo said he's looking for "financial flexibility," so I would not rule anything out.

Waivers expired on Harper. He remains a Nat.

Yeah, just read this:

In an open letter to the team's fans, Nationals owner Mark D. Lerner explained the reasoning behind the trades, writing that Washington "gambled" at the July 31 trade deadline by not trading some players then.

"When something isn't working, you evaluate the situation and take the necessary steps to improve it. You don't just stand by, cross your fingers, and hope for the best. Unfortunately, in this case, that means making very tough decisions about our roster," Lerner wrote.

Sounds to me like they are saying they should have traded players in July because they would have got more for them then, but they 'gambled' and didn't make trades so now all they can hope for is 'financial considerations'. In other words salary dump now, and use the saved money for next year.

I don't think there's a "should have" in this. Just a wager on the roster than did not pay off.
