Great win, BUT Strausberg looked bad, and his fastball by the 4th inning was 4 mph slower than it was all year(before this start)..

Worrisome? Maybe another reason the Nats put up the white flag?

BTW if you are a baseball fan 2 great pitching match ups today..

Nats and Phils. And Mets and Giants.. Good stuff..

Not sure why Billy Beane never went to a big market team. He's a GREAT GM/exec...He could have made some big bucks in a big market.

Still a game and a half back with Houston catching their second wind. I'm not seeing the A's catch them. But, the 2nd wild card looks to be in the bag.

I think he likes having a blank canvas.

I notice the Yanks are only 7 back now, as they heat up and the BoSox come back down to earth. I doubt NY catches them, but ya never know. They have picked up three games in less than five days.

Some interesting Nats-Mets narrative in this Boswell column.

I've always been a big fan of 'harmony' in the clubhouse. It's not 100%, the late 70's Yankees fought all the time, and they won. The 1986 Mets fought amongst themselves and won. But I think most of the time the clubhouse has to get along, these guys spend too much time together.. They need team players.

I never thought the Nats go along. IDK why, I just thought the A reason(not the only reason) they never got to the WS was because the team was fractured. I think Harper is a big reason they are fractured. And Scherzer stomping around the mound after a teammate makes an error, IMO, does more harm than good.. I'm not there, so this is all guess and conjecture on my part. Dusty knew how to control some of the tension, so as we all agree here firing him was a big mistake.

I don't think the Nats need more players on the 'edge' and 'attitude'... I think they need more team players.

Just my opinion.

Fair enough. AFAIK, there are few players more team-oriented than Zimmerman, Rendon, Turner and Taylor. As for Harper, Boswell just wrote a column a couple of days ago to opine that the time to sign him to an extension is right now. That suggests to me that Boswell does not think Harp is the problem. In addition to the departure of Dusty, I think the end of Jason Werth's career hurt the Nats quite a bit.

Boswell is the Nats beat reporter/writer. I don't expect him to say anything really bad about Harper until after he's gone. IF he leaves this off-season by next year we'll know for sure if my opinion was right, or if I'm full of ****.

Baltimore is 52 games out. I don't think I've seen that before.

Boswell is not the Nationals beat writer. That's Chelsea James. Boswell is the senior sports columnist, and he's not known for pulling punches. Here's an example from earlier.

[h=3]After too many self-inflicted wounds, this Nationals season can probably be pronounced dead[/h]
The Nationals have simply made too many mistakes to stay in the NL East race, and Sunday's embarassing defeat against the last-place Marlins feels like the final blow.

I read that a couple of days ago . Saying a team is out of it in September(close enough) and pointing a finger at 1 of the best players in the game and blaming him for problems in the clubhouse and saying he's 1 of the reasons one of the highest payroll teams failure to make the WS for years? That's 2 different things, the latter is on a whole higher level of criticism.

Hey I admit I could be talking out of my ass, and IMO if he leaves this off season we'll probably know a lot more next year. But in 4 years they have been favorites to win it all, but they never made it to the WS, and in those 4 years with 3 different managers twice they didn't even win their division, the very weak NL East.

I'm just saying there's something going on in the clubhouse we're not seeing. I could be very wrong, again just my opinion.

I think Jason Werth would have spilled the beans by now.

Good point, unless of course he was also part of the problem. IF( a big IF) an unhealthy clubhouse is a reason for the Nats problems I am NOT putting all of the blame on Harper. No, it's never 1 reason, and it's never 1 guy.

Werth was always cited as the undisputed clubhouse chief.

Of the WHOLE clubhouse? Or a clique? If there's trouble in a clubhouse, or a workplace it's usually because cliques form.

The clubhouse rumors

Even with the losing and apparent Martinez issues, the last week is where things really started to get strange in D.C. It started with a Jeff Passan article published on Yahoo! Monday afternoon titled “10 Degrees: How the underachieving Nationals reached the point where trading Bryce Harper could make sense” and included an anonymous source who said the “clubhouse is a mess” and that it had “festered” throughout the season.

Notably, as this will come into play later, that source and three others Passan also spoke to who corroborated the original source’s observation all spoke anonymously because of “fear the organization would punish them for speaking publicly.”

What does that mean? He lied? Or he was protecting the players? The Nats got rid of the player who they thought was the source. A guy they needed. Kind of conflicting.

Yup. Rizzo thought Kintzler was the source. He denied it, and that line of inquiry ultimately compelled Passan to admit he had no player sources. What does it mean? I don't know.
