Science and Religion, a comparative study [W:222]

Ummmm I took biology in school, didn't you? Our cells continue to renew themselves, yet our bodies age and die...what lies at the root of cellular aging...scientists have long wondered why but all they have is theories at best...just one small paragraph from this article...

Washingtonpost.com: Horizon Section

They actually know what causes aging and a drug is expected to start human testing in just a few months.

They actually know what causes aging and a drug is expected to start human testing in just a few months.

As I said earlier, it's not WHAT but WHY...and that they cannot prevent...

So now you stoop to changing another's post in your quoting, a desperate and despicable practice, sir, beneath contempt...

I indicated that I edited your post my dear so, just calm down with the rage won't you. If all you are is someone who is on a hair trigger just going out of their way to find offence then you will find it but, it seems to me that your OP is the typical platitude I often see from politicised religionists. It thinks that it is deeper than it actually is but, it says nothing about the World and everything about the poster.

...When militant atheists attempt to ram science down my throat as the be-all and end-all of human life, as the panacea for all our earthly woes, it behooves me to point out that it has been, at best, a mixed blessing. :)

Hell, you Christians are so damned oppressed aren't you.

Sister, you just point out these mad militant terrorists who are 'ramming science down your throat' and I'll go after them with you. I can't believe that these bastards are forcing medicine, engineering and rational thinking on you like this! I'm so mad I'm going to go kill me an elephant with my mind.

Yeah, how's that workin' for ya?

If believing a "fairy tale" as you put it, gives me a solid hope for the future and makes my life worth living NOW, I'll take it over what having no hope brings...thinking this is all there is, 70-80 years and then you die...even if it's a farce, it's a far better life than having no hope for a future...

Who has no hope? What a ridiculously condescending post this is. Man, I'm so triggered I'm off to find me a large grey mammal to mind cull.

Science is a tool, it can be used for good or bad.
Religion is a tool, it can be used for good or bad.

What's your point?

Science is a tool, it observes how things are, not how we would like them to be.
Religion is a fool, it can be used only if the fool suspends rational thinking.

You know what, with our new resident fundy-in-chiefs starting over with infecting this forum section with their ignorance I might reconsider my moderate stance in the 'Religion Diminishes Intellect' thread. Fundies spoiling for a fight with the latest genius taught them by preacher Billie Jo Bob is dull and only useful for satire.

If science is the be all and end all it should have the answer to a perfectly legitimate question...

Why do you think it is a legitimate question?? You are not backing up any of your claims. Science decribes what happens very precisely.. and that is how and why from a physical point of view. You seem to be looking for woo.

My point is not aimed at you if your post represents your views.
My point is aimed at those who remove the "bad" from your first line and the "good" from your second. :)

You are boxing shadows, burning straw men and behaving just as badly as any 'militant'. Wrapping your 'militancy' up in flowers does not disguise it, it just makes your posts hypocritical.

Not nearly as condescending as you are...feel free to tell me what your hope is, beyond living 70-80 years tops...I'm listenin'...

Are you claiming that a god does not exist? That's the ultimate silliness, my friend.
There are reasons to believe in a god. There are no reasons to believe that a god does not exist.
"Progressed" have we? Toward what? :)

Define 'god'.

Define 'god'.

Anything that is worshiped can be termed a god, inasmuch as the worshiper attributes to it might greater than his own and venerates it...a person can even let his belly be a god...

People still get sick, grow old, and die...that will never change as long as there is sin...

No, people are born, grow old and sometimes get sick.

The first two are a result of our biology and evolution the third is reduced significantly by science.

It is telling that the first in your list was 'get sick' though isn't it, almost like you want people to get sick for their sins and transgressions.

I've never sinned in my life. Ever.

One word...Satan...his goal is to turn as many as he can away from God...and he's doing a good job...

Ridiculous religious arguments and the internet are doing that my dear, not 'gods turned bad'. That's why you hate science and rational thinking isn't it, because it is giving gods a slow painful death.

Really? Then why hasn't science explained that? Why hasn't science been able to stop aging and dying? Our bodies are made to last forever, our brains have the capacity to hold countless information...scientists don't understand the aging process or why it happens...why?

And no, it is not natural...we all have the desire to live because we were created that way...

Science can't explainism, huh?

It has the potential to do so in the future in a way that religion never has and never will.

The thread topic is SCIENCE and RELIGION, ladies and gentlemen. :)

Yes. Make a serious point or argument and you will will have a thread topic to discuss but, that was never the point was it? This whole thread was predicated upon a cheap shot at science and you got back what you started with.

Please show evidence that our bodies are made to last forever. Please show evidence that our brain has the capacity to hold 'countless information'. Bible quotes woudl be considered 'an unsupported claim'

I've had this broom for twenty years, same one that I had all that time ago. It's had four new handles and six new heads but, it's the same broom.

No I'm not...that explains WHAT happens...not WHY...

No, they are the same question, you are framing it to make a metaphysical point. Science answers 'why' all the time.

No, I won't. I'm not going to parade that like some freak show in the same way that religious people do, especially not on the internet for some anonymous religious wannabe. If you can't live a fulfilling life in this reality without religion then carry on but, stop telling me how oppressed you all are while you are beating me over the head with your religion.

I thought so...

Nope, I can say that without fear of contradiction, I have never sinned in my life, not once.

Something that I can say with considerable justification is that I have a far superior morality to God as described to me.

Oops there's you lying again...

Oops there's you lying again...

How am I lying? On what basis do you make that assertion?

I wonder if you are capable of having that conversation?
