Ron DeSantis uses ‘monkey’ to describe Andrew Gillum agenda; Democrats brand it racist

If desantis can't handle this, how will he be able to handle being Governor?

Handle what? Stupid people screaming OFFENDED ? Hopefully he tells them "It was a word, not racism, if you are offended that's a you problem" and he ignores it moving forward.

While there has been, his statement was:

“The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state. That is not going to work. That’s not going to be good for Florida.”

That doesn't seem that the word "monkey" was used in a racially disparaging manner. So in this case, I would say that it wasn't a racist use of the word. He should have chosen words a bit more wisely, but it wasn't racist.

Nothing to do with race at all, but in today's society stupidity and EMO is all the rage.
welcome to the new dark age.

We shall see, but if he is anything at all like Swampy shouldn't he not back down without a fight??? HEHE just saying.

I will make that argument because it seems rather clear that in this instance it wasn't used as a racially derogative manner. As I said, he should have used a better choice of words, but it doesn't appear to be racially motivated in this instance. We can all be outraged by words people use, but we should also keep in mind context. Monkeying around, monkeying with, is a common phrase that doesn't relate to race.

I will leave it to others with the proper training to decide if this was some sort of Freudian slip or something else. Regardless, it is a terrible way for DeSantis to begin his general election campaign.

It certainly is not a good first step and he should have chosen his words better. But the term is common and not racially charged. There are likely far greater topics to go after Desantis on other than a common, non-racial term.

White Guilt for sins of the past, and every year that past gets further away. Real Racism needs to be confronted, calling anything even remotely near something that might, in another context and situation be construed maybe to be if you hold it upside and look at it sideways as racist... doesn't help anything.

You use the phrase "sins of the past". Glad to see you admit there is a reason for the race card and I hope you see it was racist whites who invented the race card, empowered it and keep it going strong today.

Racist? Nah, Democrats are seizing on a very poor choice of words when DeSantis told his audience that Florida would be monkeying up the state if they they voted for his opponent, who happens to be black. But, I do have to say that DeSantis seems to have the mind of a monkey himself to have made such a faux pas here. Yea, this was dumb. He should be feeding his own base, not that of the Democrats. LOL.

Ron DeSantis uses ?monkey? to describe Andrew Gillum agenda; Democrats brand it racist - Sun Sentinel

From what I've seem of DeSantis, he probably was intending to feed the Trump base. Trump has basically dispensed with any need for coming up with dog whistles - he uses a bullhorn. Maybe only Trump can get away with it?

Yeah, they voted Democrat remember?

Is “ don’t monkey this up” actually a saying though, I’ve heard “ stop monkeying around”but not “ don’t monkey this up”

Yes, it is. Used it often.

"Let’s build off the success we’ve had on Gov. Scott. The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases bankrupting the state. That is not going to work"

I have never heard of Monkeying up something

But I have heard of stop monkeying around

Now as then, the GOP, which has thoroughly transitioned into the White Nationalists Party, is gas lighting by saying the choice of words was an extraordinary coincidence and everybody is just being overly sensitive.

Without knowing your age, Cardinal, I must ask when in your lifetime was the Republican party not characterized as the White Nationalist Party? Because that is all I have heard whenever I have heard the Republican party spoken about: The Republican Party is for Rich, White, Straight, Male Christians. No one else need apply.

And then most of the 20th century happened and the racist switched parties.

Actually, the vast majority of the racists switched parties in the 1960's, after Lyndon Johnson get the Equal Rights Law Passed. After that, it only took Nixon a little effort to make his "Southern Strategy" successful.

Oh, we always knew the Republican party had a White Supremacist problem. It's just that in 2016 they became the predominant identity of the party. I know that a lot of Republicans are unhappy about this, but they defend the White Supremacists in their party in much the same way the family will circle the wagons around the loser gambler son: they're not proud of him, but he's still part of the family. Only in this analogy, that loser gambler son became the family's patriarch and is making the rules now.

I have, its a variation on the wrench in the works. Same meaning.

No, Southerners moved to North and Northerners moved to the South, duh!

That's how we get Southern Heritage and it's not racist at all!

/ end sarcasm.

Yes - you are correct. I was thinking of Strom Thurmond leaving the Dems in 48 to run as a Dixiecrat and later endorsing Eisenhower in 1952 - which still takes me a couple of years short of the majority of the 20th century I claimed. Thank you for the correction.

It is a saying, yes. A variation of several idioms.

Thank goodness he didn't use the word niggardly in his remarks.

I wasn't disputing it, just laughing at the premise that the people who voted for those racists have suddenly changed in states that still revere and remember pro-slavery nationhood attempts like the Confederacy.

;)

I didn't vote for desantis i voted for putnam but desantis won.
I checked into Gillum. I didn't hear much of him during the election compared to the other 3 big dem's running.

those 3 were all nut jobs. I thought that they might have nominated someone a little bit more sane than those 3.
nope he is about as bad as they are if not worse.

Fl is in a weird spot. We were running a nice surplus but 2 things have happened we had some massive hurricanes last year and medicaid rolls increased
Gillum wants to expand medicaid more making even more social spending.

their is the usual raise tax on the wealthy nonsense and business that never works.
of course being a liberal he is anti-2nd amendment.

and the list goes on and on.

more regulations more government more restrictions.
so i guess my vote will go to desantis.

why can't liberals every elect someone that is sane.

The Republicans put up there wack-a-doo, why don't the Democrats get the same right? It will be an interesting race.
