Being successful was important to me. I enjoyed being so and the challenges to stay in business and prosper. Now I am comfortably retired.

Early social democrats, like germany’s spd, were openly Marxist and called for abolishing capitalism through state ownership. But Marxist economics repeatedly led to disaster - mass starvation and economic collapse. Fascist and nazi governments demonstrated a different model: the state didn’t own the economy, but it controlled it tightly. That system was still oppressive, but far more efficient.

Ironically, that’s the model many modern left-leaning governments follow. Take Canada’s healthcare system: doctors remain private, but nearly every aspect of their work is dictated by the state. It's not ownership - it’s control. And for all practical purposes, that’s what matters.
