Redskins' Free Agency, Draft picks, Acquisitions 2017

How about a Tight End, high in the draft, to get our running backs a few more yards off the line?

"•David Njoku**, TE, Miami
Height: 6-4. Weight: 246. Arm: 35.25. Hand: 10.
40 Time: 4.64.
Projected Round (2017): 1-2.
4/8/17: Sources across the NFL have been comparing Njoku to freakishly athletic tight ends like Vernon Davis and Eric Ebron. Njoku was excellent for Miami in 2016. The redshirt sophomore is a dangerous receiver who uses speed to get open and size to make contested catches downfield. He totaled 43 receptions for 698 yards with eight touchdowns in 2016 and would have put up more production if quarterback Brad Kaaya had been more consistent. Miami also split the tight end targets between Njoku and Chris Herdon IV. As a freshman in 2015, Njoku had 21 catches for 362 yards and a score.

Njoku has upside to develop into a receiving threat in the NFL with the size and strength to be a blocker. At the combine, he put together a good workout that met expectations.

Redskins Substituted Two Tackles for Tight Ends on some running plays, in 2016, because the available tight ends could not block well enough on Running plays. When tackles line up as tight ends, is there a surprise that it is a run? Can the Quarterback still switch to a pass, at the line of Scrimmage?

Redskins Signed

April 6, 2017 Signed OL John Kling.
April 3, 2017 Signed LB Zach Brown.

"The Redskins signed offensive lineman John Kling, the team announced Thursday.

Kling, 6-foot-8 and 320 pounds, went undrafted out of Buffalo last season but was eventually signed by the Chicago Bears.

He played in one preseason game for Chicago before getting released, then continuing his career in the Canadian Football League and the Arena Football League. Kling most recently was with the Philadelphia Soul of the AFL.

Kling played both tackle positions at Buffalo, where his unit allowed only seven sacks in his senior season and Kling was named to the All-MAC Conference Second Team in 2015. With his addition, the Redskins now have 12 offensive linemen under contract"

TRENT MURPHY, LB

"The NFL has suspended Washington linebacker Trent Murphy for the first four games of the 2017 season because of a violation of its performance-enhancing drug policy.

A spokesperson for the league announced Murphy's suspension Friday, per Washington's official Twitter account.

Washington selected Murphy in the second round of the 2014 draft. He has moved between outside linebacker and defensive end in three seasons with the team.

"Paul served as a mix of a third tight end and fullback before getting hurt, then linebacker Houston Bates filled that role when Paul was lost for the season. There were certainly times where it seemed like the Redskins could have benefited from having a true fullback. Ty Nsekhe (a tackle by trade) served as a blocking tight end in some packages. Davis did well in the blocking department for much of the year, although he did falter somewhat late in the year. So, this could be a true need."

[h=1]Redskins re-sign Chris Thompson, but still seeking backfield help[/h]Securing third-down running back Chris Thompson solidifies Washington's depth, but a starter with big-play ability remains on the wish list.

"another team extended an offer to Thompson that the Redskins chose not to match.

Thompson, 26, played in every game last season and gained 705 total yards with five touchdowns — 356 yards and three touchdowns on 68 rushes and 349 yards and two touchdowns on 49 receptions.

Thompson also caught two touchdown passes in 2015 but, otherwise, all those numbers represented career-highs.

At the NFL combine in March, Redskins coach Jay Gruden described Thompson’s value.

“Even if you have a first-, second-down back, I have no problem bringing Chris Thompson, a guy like that, off the bench and bringing him out there,” Gruden said. “He’s a great pass protector, great .

"Redskins started the 2017 NFL Draft by selecting back-to-back Alabama defensive players, first selecting defensive lineman Jonathan Allen with the No. 17-overall pick before picking his college teammate -- linebacker Ryan Anderson -- in the second round with pick No. 49.

Washington continued the defense-heavy approach to start the draft, selecting UCLA cornerback Fabian Moreau in the third round.

Then on Saturday, the Redskins picked Oklahoma's all-time leading rusher -- running back Samaje Perine -- and Michigan State safety Montae Nicholson in the fourth round before selecting Arkansas tight end Jeremy Sprinkle in the fifth round to team up with the likes of Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis.

Following a trade with the Minnesota Vikings, the Redskins moved up to pick No. 199-overall to select Wyoming center Chase Roullier in the sixth round. Ten picks later, Washington selected Georgia State's all-time receiving leader in Robert Davis.

To conclude this year's draft, Washington selected Louisville safety Josh Harvey-Clemons and Auburn defensive back Joshua Holsey in the seventh round."

Redskins Add 10 For 2017 Draft Class

JEREMY SPRINKLE, TE

"Strengths Combination tight end who doesn't have to leave the field. Has arm length and base to help in pass protection. Effective blocker willing to do the physical work. Snaps into down blocks and secures. Strong hands lead to sustained blocks. Able to engage and sustain against safeties in space. Long frame with room to carry more weight. Has arm length and hand size of an NFL offensive tackle. Big, presentable target over the middle. Plus red-zone worker. Sells blocks on delayed-release play-action. Burrows into holes of zone and protects passes with his frame. Goes down to pick low throws off top of grass. Sneaky build-up of speed in routes. Long strides eat up ground as route progresses. Can pull away from linebackers on intermediate routes. Uses height, arm length, and high-point technique to go way up the ladder and over top of defenders. Nasty stiff-arm after catch. Above-average body control for size.

Weaknesses Needs more work on arm day in the gym. Upper-body thickness hasn't caught up with frame yet. Feet a bit heavy out of release and into routes. Legs and arms flail away into some of his breaks. Below-average at utilizing route leverage to create additional throwing room for quarterbacks. Needs to adjust crossing routes to keep defenders on his hip. Lacks short-area quickness to make defenders miss after catch. Needs to work back to ball more often."

I was hoping that the offensive line and Tight Ends might get some attention so there could be some bigger, deeper holes for running plays.

Tight End Jeremy sprinkle seems like a step toward making deeper holes.

Wyoming center Chase Roullier, can also play Guard. Taken by Redskins in 6th Round.

"Strengths Thick lower body with big calves and thighs. Body is built to anchor. Well-schooled and technically sound. Dips and strikes opponent with upward blow from his hips at point of attack. Bends better than expected and unlocks his leverage potential. Gritty worker who uses body control and hand strength to sustain blocks. Generates momentum into down blocks and fork-lifts defensive tackles off their spots. Good power as drive blocker, but functional in space as well. Has starting experience at both guard and center. Plays to and after whistle. Physical and tough. "

"Bottom Line Lack of length will hurt his cause for some teams, but his ability to handle both guard and center duties should add to his overall draft standing. Roullier is a power-based run-blocker who plays with good leg drive and leverage to open running lanes. He could struggle to handle athletic interior linemen, but should still appeal to teams looking for a scheme flexible, power player in the later rounds. "

"Our breakdown of UDFA center Quinton Schooley.#60 Quinton Schooley/C NC State: 6’3/3 294"

The Good

– Looks to have average to above average length
– Plays with active hands, works hard to keep them inside, and will fight with the defender
– Light on his feet in pass protection, ability to mirror and sits in his base
– Base allows him to reset and anchor versus most bull rushes, shows ability to recover
– Sets his hips well in the run game and shows a high degree of success on down blocks, generates a push
– Active eyes and does excellent job of finding work when uncovered in pass pro or keying stunts/blitzes
– Does a nice job on double-teams, working with the guard to carry the nose tackle into the second level"
"

"He’s experienced, played a ton of ball, and shows solid technique as a result. I had read a 2014 article that said he wanted to get better on down blocks. If his 2015 tape is any indication, he certainly did. Playing versus Louisville’s one-gap front four helped but Schooley opened up some serious running lanes."

Tyler Catalina, G, Undrafted

"Tyler Catalina, OG

School: Georgia | Conference: SEC
College Experience: Senior | Hometown: Worcester, MA
Height/Weight: 6-4 / 330 lbs. "

"A four-year starter, Catalina spent his first three seasons in Rhode Island's spread offense vs. FCS-level competition before transitioning to a pro-style offense in the SEC at Georgia this past season -- had offers from several SEC programs for his final season of eligibility. He started all 13 games at left tackle for the Bulldogs in 2016, filling a large need for the offense, but it was an up-and-down year as the speed of the SEC exposed several of his deficiencies at tackle. Catalina struggles with balance and technique when forced to block in space and the move inside should help his consistency with less real estate to cover. Although his issues in pass protection are tough to overlook, Catalina has the heavy hands and finishing toughness for the next level and coaches will try and develop the rest -- guard-only prospect who is worth a late round pick or priority free agent. KYLE KALIS, G

"6'4"
Height

32 7/8"
Arm Length

308LBS.
Weight

10 1/4"
Hands

"Strengths Well-schooled in technique and works hard to play with good fundamentals. Hands in punch-ready position in pass sets. Looks to control defender's shoulder with his hands and generally lands an accurate strike. Operates with sturdy base and good balance. Utilizes flat-backed posture through his pass sets. Understands his assignments and follows them against blitzes and twists. Maintains desired base and posture throughout most pass sets. Has enough natural strength to withstand a strong bull-rusher.

Weaknesses Might be playing with a base that is too wide. Wide base and upright pad level generates very little push as a drive blocker. Stiff throughout his lower body and operates with pounding, heavy feet. Pops straight up and takes restricted slow steps when pulling or when climbing to second level. Successful cut-off blocks on the second level will be a rarity in the pros."
