Who all was in favor of canning Ricky Jean Francois?

"A strong locker room presence, François was never shy about voicing his opinions. In recent weeks, his Twitter account became a frequent mystery, as it seemed the defensive tackle was questioning the Redskins offseason moves. Then, after the news of Scot McCloughan's firing, François openly criticized the team in a radio interview for the decision, saying the Redskins were headed back to "the drama."

By openly questioning the team, perhaps François opened the door for his release. At the same time, it's possible the Redskins brass saw a defensive tackle set to turn 31 in November and decided to take the cap savings.

Regardless, this leaves the Redskins without their two best defensive linemen from the 2016 season. Chris Baker signed with the Bucs early in free agency, and François will likely sign elsewhere before too long. Washington has brought in new players in Terrell McClain and Stacy McGee, though their track records will not elicit too much excitement from fans."

"The Redskins have signed former Colts linebacker Chris Carter as a free agent, the team announced.

Carter, a 2011 fifth-round pick of the Steelers, will be joining his fifth NFL team. After playing for three years in Pittsburgh he has been with the Bengals and Ravens and he did two stints with the Colts.

Carter has been a reserve and special teams performer during his six NFL seasons. He has just four starts and none since 2013.

He has played on the outside when he has played on defense although at 245 lb. he also could play on the inside. But if he makes the roster it’s doubtful that he will see much action on defense and will be a special teams contributor as much as anything."

"The Washington Redskins had a lot of trouble on the defensive side of the football last season. This is no secret. They had issues at every level of the defense, but in particular, they had trouble at linebacker. Despite having some good individual performers, they were never able to find a combination of players that was able to work well. To attempt to help out the unit and the special teams group, the Redskins inked Chris Carter to a deal today"

"After four seasons with the Oakland Raiders, defensive lineman Stacy McGee is heading to the East Coast, signing a deal with the Washington Redskins.

McGee, 27, was drafted in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma.

In four seasons with the Raiders, the 6-foot-3, 310 pounder has recorded 63 tackles along with three sacks and two fumbles forced in 51 regular season games.

McGee had arguably his most productive season in 2016, tallying 17 tackles along with 2.5 sacks for a Raiders team that made the playoffs.

He recorded a career-high 1.5 sacks against the San Diego Chargers on Oct. 9"

Brian Quick, WR

"When the team called with the offer, he swelled with confidence. He says their trust has him more motivated than ever."

That motivation led to 41 catches for 564 yards and three touchdowns in a full 16-game schedule. He was second on the team in receiving yards behind only Kenny Britt's 1,002, and he finally appeared to be a difference-making receiver in the NFL.

Still, Pro Football Focus gave him a mediocre grade of 61.1 in its 2017 free-agency tracker, which was 35th among wide receivers.

While the lack of an established resume likely hurt his earning potential on the open market, Quick is still only 27 years old.

Until the 2016 campaign, Quick was just a potential-filled receiver with athleticism and height (6'3") who could theoretically develop into an impact weapon. He still hasn't fulfilled expectations, but he turned the corner in a healthy season and will now have a chance to build on that with a new team."

Brian Quick, Redskins Agree to Contract After 5 Seasons with Rams | Bleacher Report

"Earlier this month, wide receivers DeSean Jackson (Buccaneers) and Pierre Garcon (49ers) signed elsewhere as unrestricted free agents.

Quick is the second wide receiver to sign with the Redskins in free agency, joining Terrelle Pryor, who signed a one-year contract earlier this month.

A lot was expected from Quick, 27, when the Rams drafted him 33rd overall out of Appalachian State in 2012, but he's had a penchant for drops and hasn't quite lived up to the hype.

Quick has made 105 catches for 1,499 yards and 10 touchdowns in 67 games for the Rams since, hauling in only 51 percent of his career targets. Only six receivers had a lower rate during that time.

He seemed to be getting going early in 2014, making 21 catches for 322 yards in the first four games, but he was soon set back by a devastating shoulder injury that could've ended his career."

Here is an in-depth interview on how Scott McCloughan thinks, from last season:

"B/R: You've obviously made a huge decision to keep Kirk Cousins on the franchise tag.

SM: We did the franchise tag, and I know everybody made fun of me, and that's fine. But you know what? The guy won the division. They won nine games. They won four games the year before and turned around and won nine, and he plays all 17 with the playoffs, and we went on the road at the end of the season having to win, and we beat Philly and Dallas, both at their places. You know, the NFC East, I don't care if they're good teams or bad teams, you still don't win on the road. We didn't early in the season, but he kept going and going, and the players rallied around him.

B/R: You also had very little choice. If you don't franchise him, other teams bid. At the same time, it's hard to pay a quarterback the market rate after only one full season. If you give Cousins $55 million or $60 million guaranteed, you get criticized even more.

SM: I told Kirk when he came in—and his wife must have hugged me for 10 minutes because he just went from making $600,000 to $19.9 million—I told him, "You take care of me and this organization, we're going to take care of you. I promise. And we're going to build this roster to where you can be average and still be good. I promise you."

Scot McCloughan Q&A: The Philosophy and Tools of a Successful NFL GM | Bleacher Report

This interview with Scot displays the GM strategy of being trustworthy, in dealing with players, and letting players know what they can expect. Scot feels he needs to be in control, to be effective as a GM, and get the best out of players.

Bruce Allen was not able to give Scot the control a GM should have. Another problem was that Scot was an offensive minded GM, and Bruce's father, George, could not care much about offense.

Clarity means that Scot is out of the picture, and Bruce Allen is president, signing the checks and contracts.

I can believe that Scot was getting ignored, in January, restricted from the media, etc., and just saw no point in coming to work. Bruce Allen was not able to give Scot the support that a GM needs to motivate his players. Scot just switched to a work-from-home basis. Just as much influence: Little or none.

Coach Jay Gruden does not expect to have much control of personnel decisions. The Redskins Players know they need to impress Gruden for playing time, which Jay controls. But contracts are not really in his scope. So being ignored on personnel matters does not bother Jay.

There is some talk about drafting a running back. I think to run, the Redskins need a better offensive line, with more depth.

Offensive Tackles

"4. Garett Bolles | Utah

His film is solid and the physical tools are all there, which is why some analysts will have Bolles ranked higher in this group and projected in the first round. But he’ll be a 25-year-old rookie, which by itself makes me wary of spending such a premium pick on him.

5. Tony Garcia | Troy

Arguably the biggest boom-or-bust prospect in this group, it doesn’t take long to see why NFL scouts will love Garcia. He’s got a tall frame that could use a few pounds of quality bulk added on, but his footwork, length and athletic ability could make him this year’s best left tackle, if he develops his technique and consistency at the next level."

The Cowboys have 3 Offensive Tackles in the top 25 rated in 2016. The Redskins have 1, Trent Williams, who is not reliable for playing every down of every game.

The Redskins in the third quarter often call fewer run plays, because too many times, the run plays, later in the game, gain less than 2.5 yards a carry. When the other team's defense is playing intensely, the Redskins often gain only a yard or two, on a run play. The offensive line should be able to routinely provide a hole for a 2.5 yard gain. For over 2.5 yards, it depends on tight Ends and other blockers.

Even a good running back cannot create a hole. The Redskins offensive line needs improvement.

Other needs are more pressing, IMHO.

"Offensive line (10): All five starters return. (They still like Shawn Lauvao.) Considering there’s a chance 10 linemen will make the final roster, the Redskins need more choices -- and should end up with around 15 at the start of camp. They drafted four linemen in 2014-15, but none last season. They do have depth at tackle with Ty Nsekhe and this is a crucial year for guard Arie Kouandjio. Is he just a backup or could he someday replace Lauvao, who is in the final year of his contract? The Redskins need a backup center (John Sullivan remains a free agent), preferably one who could play guard as well."

I believe the offensive line is a big difference maker, and it is easy to neglect, trying to rely on a few stars.

How much of the Salary cap should be devoted to the Offensive Line?

I have always believed the offensive line is the heart of the best football teams. Nonetheless there are many needs and only so many draft picks and so much cash.
