Racial uproar explodes among 2020 Democrats as rivals attack Biden for comments about segregationists

Joe Biden, recalling the "civility" of the Senate in the 1970s and '80s, on Tuesday touted his experience working with two segregationist Southern senators to get "things done" — unleashing a torrent of criticism from his Democratic rivals, some of whom denounced the comments in very personal terms by citing their own race.
Yes it is the relationship of pure power and backroom deals between Parties that have contributed to a political divide and a piss poor example to use for cooperation.

Speaking at a fundraiser at New York City's Carlyle Hotel, Biden brought up the names of Sens. James Eastland of Mississippi and Herman Talmadge of Georgia, both Democrats who were staunchly opposed to desegregation. Eastland chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee when Biden entered the Senate — a committee he would later chair.

"I was in a caucus with James O. Eastland," the former vice president said. "He never called me 'boy.' He always called me 'son.'"
Well Joe check what color you are.
2 stupid missteps, Hyde Act and then this

Joe whoever gave you advice on the Hyde Act and agrees with your foot in ass today, well fire them.

There are much better ways to show examples of both Parties cooperating. Time to get your **** together.

Personally I'm a bit concerned that Biden was apparently mentored in part by someone who liked segregation.

Trump is the king of gaffes and stupid comments

It raises 2 questions.
Do people change, learn, and change how they look at things?
How far back do we go on a person running for office? At times make me wonder if people think they must have a Saint as a candidate. Kerist it is politics and a blood sport. Few rules apply

Sen Booker/Harris states he should apologize

Here's another stupid thing to say to a bunch of rich guys:

Having two days ago said the first thing he would do as president is raise taxes, Joe Biden told a room full of affluent New York donors Tuesday that he didn’t think it was appropriate to “demonize” the rich.

“Remember, I got in trouble with some of the people on my team, on the Democratic side, because I said, you know, what I’ve found is rich people are just as patriotic as poor people. Not a joke. I mean, we may not want to demonize anybody who’s made money,” Biden told approximately 100 wealthy donors, according to Bloomberg. “Nobody has to be punished. No one’s standard of living will change.”

“When you have income inequality as large as we have in the United States today, it brews and ferments political discord and basic revolution,” he said. “It allows demagogues to step in” and blame “the other,” he said.

“You’re not the other,” Biden told the group. “I need you very badly.”

Speaking to a crowd Tuesday at a Poor People’s Campaign event, Biden said: “We have the greatest income inequity in the history of America since 1902. And the fact of the matter is there is plenty, plenty of money to go around. The first thing I would do as president is eliminate the president’s tax cut. ”

Biden Tells Mega-Wealthy Donors 'I Need You Very Badly'

Seriously...“I need you very badly.”...but the first thing I'm gonna do as President is raise your taxes.

:doh

blood in the water....only a matter of time until Joe gets dragged under water for being old + white + Racist

Frankly, I don't give a **** what they state, I want him to show he understands how wrong that guy was, and that despite getting along with him back then he wouldn't now, because he knows that kind of position is utterly unacceptable.

But I suppose it's nice that someone with more "voice" than I have is asking for an apology - but a simple apology isn't enough - just because Biden is sorry he said a thing doesn't take away the apparent influence that pro-segregation individual had, nor Biden's apparent willingness to accept such an individual as anything other then an opponent.

Maybe I'm being unreasonable, but even we could compromise on some other issues, if I were in a position of having to work with someone who thought such things I'd clash constantly with him.

Also I want to know how he (Biden) rationalized getting along with him then.

Edit: Certainly we don't need a saint, but I would like some reason to believe Biden wouldn't be friendly with someone who had such an atrocious position today.

Biden's a mistake based purely on his age. I hope he drops out.

Trump ran ONCE for President....Biden is already a TWO TIME LOSER going for THREE...so there's that

Well Trump does have eyes for Biden. He trolls Trump and Trump bites like a hungry fish.

Using a sports analogy; Biden is like the basketball team that is down 10 at the half and come out in the second half and get into foul trouble before three minutes have elapsed........double bonus?

What I tend to do in these cases is try to think of an equivalent, say Jews. And then wonder how well Biden would have worked with someone calling for Jews to be segregated and made to suffer what blacks did in the South during Jim Crow. I kind of doubt the attitude would have been, "Well, we can agree to disagree on THAT issue, but let's join hands on these other things that don't involve making second class citizens of Jews, who are my friends and campaign contributors."

At any rate, it's kind of a tough question. The southern wing of the Democratic party under FDR was overtly racist, all of them supported segregation and discrimination and Jim Crow, and on a lot of levels FDR had to work with them passing things like Social Security, which initially did exclude typically 'black' occupations. Assuming FDR didn't agree with the southern Democrats, his choice was to work with them, including making concessions on things based on race, or get far less done. That's not an easy choice. Same thing with the founding. If not for agreements that explicitly allowed for slavery, we don't have a country. I'm not comparing Biden's interactions with those, but the principle is the same.

What's a bit troubling is he took the time out to travel to these peoples' memorial services to say nice things about unapologetic racists and segregationists. That's the part that's less morally ambiguous to me. It's one thing to work with someone on issues unrelated to race, but quite another to then applaud that person in many ways in a memorial. A simple "No thanks I cannot attend" would be enough.
