Private industry is not always the superior solution.

"Musk, who recently became the second richest person in the world, "asked" employees of Tesla's production facilities to work for free"
Capitalism is a bottomless pit.

The Economist said it first but let me say it a little more judiciously.
Governments simply have no incentive to do things safely, efficiently or cost effectively. This is why private industry always works better than government for everything.

Fundamental Fred, your statement, “private industry always works better than government for everything”, lacking any additional qualifying adjectives or adverbs, or considerations of nuances, will be not be the optimum solution. In too many cases of such rigid application, it's too often proves to be contra-productive, and will exacerbate rather than improve situations.

Zero degree centigrade is not the always the optimum temperature, magnetic or due North always the optimum direction, or 100 percent purity’s always the ideal “mix”. An economist determining that privatization is the optimum solution without any additional considerations for circumstances, or facts, has not likely made a judicious determination.

Private industry is not always the superior solution. Respectfully, Supposn

Well put and welcome to the forum. We desperately need more people like you here.

When the last time it was tried? In what century?

Just a few hundred years ago (a tiny, tiny sliver of time in human existence) the idea of a representative democracy was considered a crazy idea.

You can make an argument for public goods, but for private goods, a competitive market will be better and cheaper than the government every single time.

a competitive market will be better and cheaper than the government every single time.

Competition leads to monopoly, monopoly leads to higher prices and the penetration of monopolies into government.
I have always been surprised, when market people talk about communism as a utopian society, although the "pure capitalism", that they advocate, has never really existed and cannot exist in principle, and it is an absolute utopia, or rather dystopia.
Sometimes they say that before, in the past, the market had more freedom, we should go back to the days of free capitalism. Then it must be admitted that the increase in freedom for Capital was increase in the exploitation of workers. More market = increased oppression. Down to slavery for blacks and workhouses for whites. And only the class struggle of the workers could force the "free-market capitalists" to make concessions.

Competition leads to monopoly,

There are literally millions of different competitive markets out there. If what you are saying were true, then we should see millions of monopolies.

We don't.

Workers need to compete with each other just like companies need to compete.

Most of the time private industry is better. The main role of government should be to keep the playing field level, and to punish cheaters. That means, for instance, treaties that are fair to everyone, that prosecute the purveyors of dangerous or deadly products, and maintain a judicial system that regulates contracts and copyrights.

Government should not be in the business of picking winners and losers, or backstopping bad loans. It should be building out infrastructure that benefits everyone.
Waddy, we’re in general agreement.
I’m pleased to note USA has trade agreements, but we do not have any trade treaties. Treaties have high status within USA’s constitution and federal laws. They can only be effectively proposed by the president and his department of state and require they require a 2/3 vote of U.S. Senate for confirmation.

[I’m among those that are proponents of “most favored nations” provisions which are explicitly or implied within most, (if not all) trade agreements the USA is a participates within. The basic concept doesn’t itself prohibit a participating nation from favoring its own entities but prohibits more favoring or disfavoring any other participating nation’s entities or products.]
I’m also among the proponents for USA adopting the proposed improved trade policy described within Wikipedia’s article entitled “Import Certificates”. The unilateral substantially market driven proposal is entirely compatible with the concept of basic “most favored nations” agreements. Respectfully, Supposn

Because the State since the beginning of the 20th century destroys monopolies. https://www.ushistory.org/us/43b.asp
By the way, the same fate seems to be waiting for Facebook.

A socialist economy based on planning eliminates the need for people to fight among themselves for jobs.
