Radical fundamentalism is currently responsible for the rot in the Republic, caused by repeated stonewalling at the highest levels. Yes, the radical element must be snuffed out, through proper reforms... and that radical element is coming from the right wing. We do not have a radical leftism problem in Congress, we have a fundamentalist rightism problem. If you turn off Fox News and CNN and tune into the real political analyses that are being discussed in the institutional circles, you'll see that all of the concern right now is for the right-sided imbalance happening in the U.S. The pendulum is tilting to the right, toward fascism.
Like I said, it's not serious yet because the more sturdy branches of protection have not yet been shaken. However, these investigations on Trump are showing us that the right wing in government have been conducting purges of all dissenters and attempting to make permanent modifications to the system that will favor them long-term, rather than upholding the traditions of political balance. The diversity of the Capitol community is being culled to favor a new culture that is dangerous to democracy.
Our political opponents are supposed to be our colleagues, not our blood enemies. You enjoy the power that comes with your rule of the day, you work as best you can with your opponents, and then you shake hands and hand it off to the next team. You don't corrupt the system to maintain your party's privilege for the long-term, in order to push through ideology that no democratic process would support.
The Republic is in danger.
