Officer kills woman inside her Texas home after welfare call

Clearly an awful tragedy but the entire set of facts are not known yet. The brief report claims there was a gun found. Was it in the slain woman's hand? Did she point it at the officer? Did the officer panic or did he reasonably believe she was a threat? Too many questions need to be answered before this obvious tragedy can be further categorized.

Cops are put in tough positions. When Private citizens use force, it is almost always after they have been attacked. So the cases of private citizens who legitimately use deadly force, but shoot an innocent person are lower than the cases of cops shooting innocents. But the environment is different. Cops are tasked with looking for dangerous people. And its a tough position. If someone you think is a criminal confronts you, the amount of time you have to ascertain whether they are armed or not is under a couple seconds. If you wait too long, you may be shot. If you shoot too quickly, you might well injure or kill an innocent. A guy reaching for his wallet was shot 40+ times in NYC years ago. A young man with traffic tickets was chased by a Cincinnati cop who had been erroneously told that the young miscreant had EIGHTEEN WARRANTS (warrants mean felonies). So when the young man-after being cornered by the cop, reached down to pull up his sagging shorts-the police officer shot him fatally.

Sadly, these sort of tragedies are hard to prevent.

She has a right to have a gun inside her house. That in itself should not be a reason to shoot someone.

Statistically speaking, race has a very strong influence on how dangerous someone is perceived as being.

In this case though, do you have any evidence that race played a role? Yes or No.

By reporting the race does it increase racial tensions? Yes or No.

Considering the racism present and very evident in the USA, it is important to specify the race of the victim and officer imo.

I think it's time conservatives started accepting responsibility for their actions, let's not forget, they elected a POTUS whose primary campaign strategy is using racial fear to motivate his base.

Trump’s Midterm Closing Argument: Pure Racial Fear

Trump and G.O.P. Candidates Escalate Race and Fear as Election Ploys

Playing the Trump card. Look, I did not vote for him.

Then shouldn't the standard be that any news involving any crime the race of the suspect and the victim should be reported. correct?

I never said you did. I just pointed out that when the leader of a society uses racism as his primary campaign strategy, it's a pretty major thing in that society. And conservatives bought and still buy this strategy, at least according to Trump.

Then shouldn't the standard be that any news involving any crime the race of the suspect and the victim should be reported. correct?

If it looks like race might have played a factor, then absolutely. And this case meets that bar imo.

No. It hopefully makes more people aware of the racism faced by a good chunk of America.

Unfortunately, your POTUS tries to excuse the racism, publicly supporting the KKK and Neo Nazis, while attacking those who would raise awareness about racism in America.

You really didn't answer the question of "Then shouldn't the standard be that any news involving any crime the race of the suspect and the victim should be reported. correct? "

I hope it wasn't planted...

I actually witnessed a cop trying to plant a weapon after an obnoxious drunk guy was arrested during a party following a sailboat race in Key West. Didn't work out for the cops as the firearm was moved into the crowd by friends who had played soccer in high school.

The pistol had been in an ankle holster one of the cops was wearing. Gun later turned into local police dept.

Since you used "Your POTUS", are you an American? If so, like it or not Trump is the President. You don't have to like him, but that does not take away the fact he is the Pres.

I will wait to see if the news covers anything from the investigation. It is too early to draw any conclusion of the motivation on the LEO.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A black woman was fatally shot by a white Fort Worth, Texas, officer inside her home early Saturday after police were called to the residence for a welfare check, authorities said.

Officer kills woman inside her Texas home after welfare call

I dont even know what to say anymore...

Are you sure that the police officer didn't think that they were outside their own house and that the person inside wasn't a burglar?

Many years ago the Houston cops threw a gun down on a teen that stole a car and the cops shot him. The Houston core pretty rough back then.

Sounds very bad. I wonder if she pointed a gun at the officer. At any rate its very bad.

If you were in your own house and saw what looked like an armed prowler peeping in through your window AND you had a gun on you AND you pointed that gun in preparation for "standing your ground" as a part of your constitutional right to a "castle defence", would you consider that that was sufficient justification for the person outside of your own house to kill you?

Hey, at least it wasn't in Dallas - right?

Why do you misrepresent the facts.

I read in another article that the cops went to her house at 2:30 in the morning. Why would they do a welfare check at such a late hour?

Because the criminal dope-fiends who lived in the house would most likely be sleeping and so would be less of a threat to the officers as they broke down the door?

same old same old. scared cop kills everybody.

I would be scared to. You guys are packing big weapons.

Shut up.

As I said it was bad. The woman was with in her rights to have a gun and to even point it out the window. It would explain why he fired though. He had no way to know if she was a intruder pointing a gun or not. It will be interesting to find out if she was armed or not. A few years ago a Fort Worth police shot and killed a elderly white guy who had heard a prowler and was holding a gun when the police arrived

Yeah, with police culture in this country it's becoming "oops, did we kill an innocent person? Oh well. We were in fear of our lives - something, something.".

Does it make anybody feel good that police culture promotes the idea that officers are allowed to shoot as a first response, then ask questions later?

At a guess it probably makes around 39.5 [±3.5] percent of all Americans feel very good that police officers have the constitutional right of preventive killing in situations where there might be some potential danger to someone or something (even if the police officer has absolutely nothing to go on other than "I was in a situation which my training and the standard procedures of my police department indicated that I should have an honest belief that I had to exercise lethal force in a preemptive manner to forestall what might have been a potential threat.").

She has a right to have a gun inside her house. That in itself should not be a reason to shoot someone.

I don't think anyone says that is a valid reason to shoot her: I certainly didn't.

Does reporting the facts of the case cause racial tensions to increase? I don't know, does it?

This is just maddening. How does one defend themselves from "shoot first, ask questions later"???

I'll tell ya, I'm going to think twice before calling the cops, that's for sure.

You can take on the world with a Gatling gun.

What kind of training is done in the U.S. for police officers?

Since various departments have different requirements, your question is rather difficult to answer. Possibly

although a bit dated, will give you something to think about.

In Canada an officer would have graduated from a two year Law Enforcement and Security program. They will take courses designed by the Canadian Police College.
Then if they get hired by a police force, they will be sent to a training camp. If they come out of that without any problems, they get the job.

<SARC>Yeah, but those socialist commies in Canada have to spend more time training their secret police (due to the fact that all Canadians are boneheads) in order to protect their absolute monarch from assassination. I mean, have you ever seen their so-called "Queen" walking about OUTSIDE of a thick cordon of heavily armed and armoured "Secret Statepolice" thugs like the President of the United States of America does all the time?</SARC>

When there is no proof that race entered was the cause of the shooting its inflammatory to mention it. The local media rarely identifies the race of people that commit robberies etc. unless there is a specific need to do it.
