NHL - 2016/2017 Season [W:290]

Gotta give another shout out to my Leafs, who've come back off their bye week to win two straight on the road, both 4-2 at the Rangers and Senators, moving them back into third place in their division with lots of games in hand. Pretty impressive that this really young team has now gone 8-0-2 on the road in their last ten, setting a new franchise record in the Leafs' 100th year of existence. And considering they started the year off giving up multiple goal leads to lose in at least 6 games, they could be challenging Montreal for the division lead, which is astounding.

Not getting ahead of myself here, fully realizing that with such a young team there's no telling how they'll cope with the long schedule in the second half and with the pressures of a Toronto market starving for success and a run into and in the playoffs. This could all implode at any time. But it's fun to have something to cheer for after being out in the wilderness for so long.

RIP Mike Illitch, longtime owner of the Red Wings. He loved hockey and his Wings.

Slap Shot is on the NHL network. You gotta luv the Hanson's.

Therrien out in Montreal, Julien in. Imagine a Boston/Habs playoff series...

Penguins Blue Jackets on right now. Good game. 0-0 late in the First.

Wow! What a game. 1-1 at the end of regulation. Pitt with 39 shots on goal, and CBJ with 38.

Awesome! CBJ pulls out the victory in O/T.

Pens played last night, plus this game was in Columbus. So, it's a bit of a stretch to say the BJ's are as good as the champs. But, they sure looked good tonight.

I have a ton of respect for Illitch. I just read an article that he paid Rosa Parks rent for about 15 years -- until she died. They had nothing but great things to say about him on Hockey Night in Canada. May he rest in peace.

The Blackhawks Oilers game last night was really good. Hawks lost, but only because the Edmonton goalie was off the hook great in the first period when Chicago outshot the Oilers 12-4. THe period ended scoreless.

Talbot stayed hot, allowing in only one goal on a total of 39 shots against. It was pretty awesome to see...even as a Hawks fan.

For the 8th straight year the Hurricanes will miss the playoffs. Traded Hainsey to the Pens for a second round pick.

Now have 3 second round picks this year and 10 picks overall.

Well, this is surprising...https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2017/02/lightning-trade-bishop.html

Superstar goalie and impending free agent Ben Bishop has been traded by the Tampa Lightning to the Los Angeles Kings. TSN’s Bob McKenzie was the first to break the news. McKenzie’s TSN colleague Aaron Ward reports that the return for Tampa is likely 2016-17 surprise Peter Budaj, 2015 second-round defenseman Erik Cernak, and draft picks. More details on the deal will be known soon.

If this trade confuses you, you’re not alone, as it is officially the biggest surprise of the 2017 NHL Trade Deadline to date and will be tough to beat. The Kings just got back starter Jonathan Quick last night, after he had missed much of the season with injury.

Quick won 4-1 last night and looked good, so unless he had problems after the game, this makes no sense.

Chances are excellent that the Flyers will be the first team ever to win 10 straight games in one season, AND not make the playoffs. :(

Captain Giroux. The "franchise superstar" has a +/- right now of: -18

Voracek: -20

Simmonds: -19

Schenn: -20

sooooooooooo painful........

Good Hawks-Blues game last night. It was closer than the final score would indicate, due to empty net goal with30 seconds left or so.

Shattenkirk to Washington. Is this the Caps year? Hard to see who might beat them...

Hockey night in Ohio. Blue Jackets vs Ottawa and Blackhawks vs Nashville. Should be flipping back and forth quite a bit tonight, especially since the Cavs are playing in Miami tonight too.

CBJ game should be the dominant channel though. That seems to the best match up.

Chicago has, hands down, the worst play by play guy in hockey. The backup color guy is really bad too...

For TV?

I like Pat Foley- but it's probably because He's been around since before Wirtz allowed games to be televised.

Eddie O is not so good, I agree.

I like the radio guys- especially the play by play guy. That must be one of the hardest jobs in broadcasting.

Man, a whole lot of Red Wings jerseys in Colorado tonight. Somehow that makes me chuckle.

Don't look now, but the Blue Jackets are tied with the Caps for league lead in points. Go CBJ!

My Canucks lost again. They played so well against the Oilers but could not get the puck into the goal.

Hurricanes set a franchise record for most consecutive games with at least one point (9-0-4) breaking the record of 12 set by the Stanley Cup winners in 2006.

Still 4 points behind Boston with 6 games to play. Don't think they'll climb that mountain, but they have been fun to watch this month.

Have to give a shout out to my Leafs who clinched a playoff spot last night with a gutsy win against Pittsburgh after a Penguin who shouldn't even be in the league blindsided Freddie Anderson with a hipcheck to the head knocking our star goalie out of the game and perhaps out of several games to come. More needs to be done to protect goalies and/or punish/suspend those who hit them in the crease injuring them - they are usually in a pretty vulnerable position.

Leafs, with the youngest team in the league and the most rookies in their lineup has risen from last in the league last year to 95 points with a game remaining and have been improving as the year goes on. Austin Matthews is the real deal, now being only the 4th player in NHL history to hit 40 goals in a season while still in his teen years and he's done it at a time when scoring in the league is down in comparison to former years. And Mike Babcock, known more for leading veteran laden teams in Detroit and the Canadian Olympic team, has done an excellent job connecting with this very young group of players. Bodes well for years to come.

Good luck to all who've had the good fortune of having their favourite team make the playoffs - best time of year, if you're part of the action. Enjoy!!
