NHL - 2016/2017 Season [W:290]

Carolina Hurricanes forward Bryan Bickell has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, the team revealed Friday

Long story short, Bryan Bickell has multiple sclerosis. He is in my hopes and prayers.

"Since the 2015 playoffs, I've been struggling to understand what was going on with my body," Bickell said via a statement released by the team Friday afternoon.

"Again during the past few weeks, it felt like something wasn't right," Bickell added. "Obviously this is a bit of shock for my family and me, but I am hopeful I will be able to return to the ice and continue playing the game that I love."

Leafs had another nice win last night, running their record at home to 7-2 and going 6-2 in November, now that Andersen has found his groove and is playing well. They're a really fun team to watch. I was worried that the Marner choice, over Hanifen, would be a mistake, but the kid looks awesome so far, reminding me a bit of McDavid and Kane, and with the exception of Laine tearing it up in Winnipeg, Marner is the best rookie in the league. He's out played Matthews to date, although Matthews has been super too, just a little snake bit around the net and he's really trying hard to buy into Babcock's defensive responsibilities first which might be affecting his offensive touch.

All in all, the Leafs are a pleasant surprise this year, well ahead of the "Shanaplan" and deserving of the comments that they have the best young talent in the league, a far cry from the sorry state of their minors and young talent only a few years ago. Defense is still a major issue, in my view, which makes any talk of playoffs or contention premature, but they are scoring in the top 5 of the league and with Andersen playing really well, they're in every game.

After beating Toronto last night, the Hurricanes are 5-1 since Trump got elected.

I'm actually kind of impressed with the Sabres right now. With Eichel and Kane out, and no goaltending to speak of, they're not embarrassing themselves.

Flyers win 5th straight.

Claw their way back into a good place to be this time of year.

Now I'm just waiting for the bottom to fall out again....

Time to start a new thread for the upcoming NHL season.

Draft coming up in a few days with the Leafs picking 1st along with 10 other picks in other rounds.

Leafs traded a couple of their picks - 30th, first round, from Pittsburgh and a second rounder from San Jose - to acquire rights to Anahiem goalie Frederik Andersen and promptly signed him to a 5 year, $27.5 million contract, securing their goaltending for the next 5 years, allowing them to concentrate on getting some back end help in the draft and in free agency. Very good move by the Leafs, in my view, because Bernier has proven he's not up to the task of being a number one and they don't have a prospective number one in the minors. Anderson has proven he's capable and without goaltending, as we saw this year, all the hard work of the offense and defense gets lost and the team's attitude suffers.

If the Leafs now find a way to sign Stamkos, and Matthews is the real deal as first pick, along with Marner moving up, they could be instant contenders for a playoff spot next year.

Have fun guys and enjoy your team's new year. Unlike last year, I'm looking forward to spending some time following the Leafs.

Watch the Leafs win The Cup... on The History Channel :)

Maybe they need to bring Carl Brewer out of retirement :)... if they could.

Stamkos staying in Tampa was a surprise... and especially hoe he handled it. Class act.

The Kings will be tough as always... now to get The Amazing Quickie Back.

I'm ambivalent about the Flyers, but it is nice to see that they can actually play in the first half of a season for a change instead of burying their year before Christmas.

Well of course the big fear is peaking at the wrong time of year.
Still so much time to flush themselves down the drain.
I'm just enjoying a few really good weeks while I can.

My recollection is that the Flyers usually start slow and then beat themselves up trying to make it into the playoffs and usually fall short but if they get there they're gassed and have nothing. This could be a good year if they have their usually good late summer/spring run.

I remember the great Leafs/Flyers series in the 70s when the Flyers got Bernie Parent from us and he was terrific for your team, winning a couple of Stanley Cups. Those were lots of fun and serious hockey. Both our fan bases need some of that excitement again - maybe someday soon.

The nine-game winning streak for the Flyers (18-10-3) is the longest in the NHL this season and their first since April 2-22, 1995.

Whoa...1995? I really gotta enjoy this while I can.

TEN!!!

Tied for longest in Flyers franchise history. :july_4th::2party::beer:

Blackhawks are hot again- they beat the Blues with a three goal third, putting them 8 points up in the division- and the best team in the NHL.

And they've done it without Crawford in goal for a couple weeks, and Kane scored his first goal in ten games.

The team is better than I thought - hope I'll be watching them in June!

Hockey for us Blue Jackets fans has been rather exciting this season. We the faithful fans finally have something to cheer about. They are currently third place in the Metropolitan Division, just one single point behind the Penguins. Big game tonight against the Penguins.

My eight year old grandson plays on a hockey team. A few weeks back they got to go up against another team at Nationwide arena during intermission at a Blue Jackets game as the future Blue Jackets (3 minutes or so on the ice). He was dressed just like a Blue Jacket only pint size. It was a big deal for him to be playing in the arena. He was the only one to score a goal. He had a chance at a second one and just missed it. He was named MVP and they interviewed him on the jumbo screen. Papa Johns awarded him with a certificate for free pizzas.

Game time in 6 minutes. Go Blue Jackets!

Woooooooot what a game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cosby scored early on for the Penguins but after that it was the last goal. Blue Jackets scored in the first period to tie. They scored two more in the second period . But in the third period they scored 4 goals in 3 minutes 40 seconds. Penguins 1 Blue Jackets 7

The Blue Jackets leap frog into first place in the Metropolitan Division. Sniff Sniff, I smell playoffs. Woooooot!

Heads up to CanadaJohn. A couple of years ago he told me they were still a young team but he saw a lot of talent. This year they have new players yet they are all playing like a team. With 7 goals no person stands out as the best player.

What a game!
