New Mexico aboard the National Popular Vote train

The Electoral College is an outdated joke....Brought on Slave holding White Men...Get rid of it

Thank you for giving us a clear picture as to why Middle America votes Republican. Because your lot ARE SO HATEFUL.

Typical faux-outrage from the fake-victim "real America" crowd.

Of course, your fake-outrage was absent in response to the wingnut who described Democratic leaning areas of the country as "sewers". I wonder why.

So, the nanny state liberals of NY & California can rule the rest of America.

I am willing to fight a civil war to ensure this could never happen.

Of course you are.

The dirty little not-so-secret reality is that fantasies of a second Civil War are very prevalent within the mainstream conservative movement in America today.

But the simple fact of the matter is that the ONLY reason the Electoral College was created was to placate the slave holding states who wanted to be credited on census rolls from millions of slaves...WITHOUT allowing them the franchise. James Madison stated as much, in no uncertain terms. Thus, the 3/5 Clause that allowed slave-holding states to retain political power in congress (and decide presidential races) even while having LESS than HALF the population of the non-slave states. States like Virginia, Mississippi and South Carolina (which were more than 50% African-American/slave) benefited the most from the Electoral College. As a matter of fact, for 32 of the first 36 years after the Constitution was ratified, the Presidency was held by a white slaveholder from Virginia.

So, enough of the nonsense with this thread. The Electoral College was originally created and maintained for ONLY one reason: to bestow undeserved political power on southern slave states in exchange for their signatures on the document that created the United States, i.e. U.S. Constitution. There is ZERO justification for it's existence in 21st century American presidential politics. And it is no small coincidence that the people defending it today are the political and ideological heirs of the people who created it.

I don't see this happening without a Republican rebellion coast-to-coast.

The GOP, being a minority these days, the only chance they have is with the EC.

Of course, even though they are a minority, that doesn't seem to stop them from speaking as a majority. "America wants this! America wants that!" When they are not much more than just whiney voices coming from the peanut gallery.

You are full of beans.

The advantage of the electoral college is that it promotes fairness from a regional perspective. Individual votes count, but in a way that is represented by states. This prevents 2-3 very large states from overwhelming the popular vote count so that a greater portion of the country can be represented by the government.

Get back to us when you grow up.

One person, one vote. Do away with the electoral college completely. Tally up the votes nationally and the person with the most wins. How does that cheat anyone out of their vote?

You are full of beans.
You're being silly. I'm giving you the REAL and inarguable truth behind the Electoral College. It had NOTHING to do with "fairness". It was the OPPOSITE of "fairness" that granted southern slave states an additional 3/5ths of a vote for every shackled slave they "owned". What you call "fair" is a system that was created ENTIRELY to STEAL votes from disenfranchised African-Americans in sparsely populated slave states. What kind of moron truly believes that's "fair"?

You are either ignorant of your own national history, or you are just blindly regurgitating conservative/fake media talking points.

Either way, it is nothing but absurd for anyone to argue that "fairness" is achieved in a system that grants more power to each vote cast in one area of the country, and less to those cast in another. That can be called a lot of things, but "fair" would not be among them.

Get back to us when you grow up.
Grow up? That's funny...and thanks, I'll take that as a compliment. But sorry, tho se who bathe themselves in ignorance don't get to question the credentials of the educated. So, I suggest that you get back to me when you've educated yourself enough to dispense with the right wing talking points, ok?

Keep on with keeping on if you like 3 large metropolises ruling the entire 48 states.

Your liberal indoctrination will not allow you to think outside of your designated ways of thinking.

I pity you.

You are closer to dictatorship way of thinking than you are a democratic republic supporter.

Says the crowd still revolting about losing an election years later.

Dude, conservatives are always talking about race wars and civil wars...behind their computer screens.

It’s legal and it’s happening. I just read that Ohio is on board as well

No it isn't. It's passing in blue states and that's where it will stop.

Yeah Smollett really was attacked and dems arent pissing and moaning about the electoral college like cry baby no nothing millenials.

speaking of revolutions and the EC, Trump called for a revolution in 2012 AND to abolish the EC when Obama was reelected. Hmmm, I wonder why the great orange hope has suddenly changed his mind about the EC now?;)

I don't know...why did lefties change their minds between gloating at 6 pm about the EC on election night and then crying about it 5 hours later? The EC has worked for everyone except this last batch of idiots we seem to have spawned.

So Trump is an idiot? Well, glad you admit it...

Sure he's an idiot...lets compare his accomplishments to yours.

The only accomplishment of Trump is he was born into money. Come to think of it, the last two GOP presidents (Bush and Trump) are examples of silver spooned elitists who only really got anywhere because of who their parent's were.

Lots and lots of people are born into money they still don't compare to him. Did you ever have a hit TV show?
