Taken in its entirety, it was all an effort to screw with our system. And you have to analyze this in its entirety. Not only the parts that support a preconceived conclusion.
I read a CBS piece that adds some detail about who and what groups were targeted or promoted by the Russian Internet Research Agency.
It fleshes it out a bit more and you have to figure it'll get even fleshier.

Yes, we should thank Mueller, but have you read the indictments?

Because, they include some things you might find interesting, such as the Russians were also doing some pulling for Bernie Sanders as well as organizing rally protests against Trump.

I suppose we all come away from our incomplete information about what Russia did with our biases intact. But I think it's fair to say, from what has been disclosed so far, that the Russian intelligence effort began with a general aim of disrupting the election but then, when Trump came on the scene, the Russian effort altered course. The Russians saw that a Trump presidency would be disruptive in and of itself to a much greater degree than the election of a conventional politician. And if that is what the Russians foresaw, they foresaw correctly.

I think you've essentially summarized it accurately.
The only point that needs to be expanded upon is how the Russians perceived our society and, as a result, what the best strategy would be in order to create disruption before and after the election.
I believe you're suggesting they perceived Trump himself would cause the most damage to our system. ("in and of itself")
Maybe you can consider that they accurately perceived that the most vocal & activist elements of our society, including the media, would be continuously energized against him if he was elected so they tried to make that happen.
Whether they had an effect on the election, or by how much, is debatable, but that it has been successful at disruption then and now, is not.

And of course you can't discount the Russian assistance in the dossier which formed the basis of pre and post-election activities to destroy Trump ... and that was all anti-Trump pre and post.
