Nolan Arenado was signed to a contract that gives him as much as Harper yearly, and with time to sign for a few more years since its 8 years and he will be eligible in his mid 30s for another.

Yes, and . . . ? The Arenado signing puts pressure on the rest of the NL West but it doesn't alter the landscape.
Harper to Philly, and the 13 year contract with no opt outs (at Harper's insistence) points to a larger plan. Harper has said he wants the 13 years to assure other potential FA's that he's not going anywhere. The structure of Harper's deal leaves the Phllies well able to sign Mike Trout (a Philly native) in two years.
 
I’m surprised Adam Jones hasn’t signed anywhere yet. He is still a solid, quality player. I’d love the Orioles to resign him so they have a good veteran leader on a team of mostly prospects, but not looking likely.

I know he has a bit of an attitude problem and wasn't a team player last year when he refused to leave Baltimore when they wanted him gone.

Adam Jones has never had an attitude problem. He has always been nothing but the epitome of class, on and off the field.

As far as turning down that trade, he was well within his right to do that. He didn’t fuss about it or throw a tantrum, he simply exercised his right to veto the trade, within the rules. He didn’t do it to hurt the Orioles or the Phillies, he did it to keep his stock as high as it could be for his future. You do have to look out for your own best interests.

If Bryce Harper, a guy who batted .249 in his most recent body of work, can get a 13 year, $330 million contract, what will an actual great player, like Mike Trout command? Could he sign the first $500 million contract?

He won't be a fa until he is 30. At that point, any team willing to give him a massive contract would be paying for past performance.

Yeah but it is elite, future Hall of Fame performance. Bryce Harper is being paid for mediocre performance.

If Harper is good for 13 years, $330 million until he is 39 years old, Trout is good for at least 10 years, $500 million until he is 40 years old. Performance-wise, they aren’t even in the same league, no pun intended.

Word is that Harper structured his Phillies contract as he did both to signal to Trout that he staying in Philly, and to allow the Phillies the financial means to sign Trout.
Btw: Harper will finish his career between 600-700 HR's, and will probably win another NL MVP.

His current pace, assuming he plays at his current level until he is 39, puts him in the 500 hr range. He better step his game up big-league!

Playing 81 games per year in the Phillies' tiny ball park will do that.

He was never bad in the clubhouse. He was young in a clubhouse led by Jason Werth. Regardless, water under the bridge.
Per year cost is not that great and will become relatively less over the life of the contract, so Phillies will have financial flexibility.
Harper wanted the years, with no-trade clause and no opt outs, so Phillies can assure future FA's he'll be staying. Target is Trout.
