During his State Of The Union Speech tonight, Biden stupidly propped up a flimsy straw-man :

" . . . The working people who built this country pay more into Social Security than millionaires and billionaires do. It's not fair. We have two ways to go - - republicans can cut social security and give more tax breaks to the wealthy . . . [boos from Congress] . . .Well, that's the proposal . . . .[boooing continues] . . Oh no? You guys don't want another$2 Trillion tax cut?? . . I kind of thought that was what your plan was. . [Congress booing continues] . . . Well, that's good to hear. You're not going to cut another $2 Trillion from the super-wealthy - - that's good to hear. . . .

Only the most profoundly ignorant dems will fall for this straw-man nonsense.

It's over for Joe Biden. There simply is no path to victory for this failed politician.

Boos from "Congress"?

Don't you mean from unruly House Republicans?

Fact is GOP does want to cut SS AND continue giving tax breaks to the wealthy. There is no getting around it.

True. And these are both good things.

The two main problems with republicans' tax breaks are:
1) Tax breaks should be for everyone - - - not just the wealthy.
2) There needs to be SPENDING CUTS to accompany the tax cuts. Republicans don't want to cut spending. Of course deficit spending is the result.

Anyways, the nonsense that Biden proposed tonight only resonates with ignorant left wingers. The majority of Independents aren't falling for this malarkey.

Let's be honest. Joe lied. He said the rich pay 8.2% rate that's not true. The rich, the really wealthy, pay an average rate of 25.9% on their earnings, the top 1% earn about 22.2 % of the money in the U.S. They pay 42.3% of the taxes. Just how much does Joe Biden think is their fair share. Anybody ever heard him or any other democrat say how much? No, because they don't mean it, because they know the wealthy pay 42% of the taxes and they accept big money contributions from many of them.

Summary of the Latest Federal Income Tax Data, 2023 Update

January 26, 2023 43 min read

New Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data on individual income taxes for tax year 2020 shows the federal income tax system continues to be progressive as high-income taxpayers pay the highest average income tax rates.[1] Average tax rates for all income groups remained lower in 2020, three years after the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, than they were in 2017 prior to the reform.

  • In 2020, taxpayers filed 157.5 million tax returns, reported earning nearly $12.5 trillion in adjusted gross income (AGI), and paid $1.7 trillion in individual income taxes.
  • The average income tax rate in 2020 was 13.6 percent. The top 1 percent of taxpayers paid a 25.99 percent average rate, more than eight times higher than the 3.1 percent average rate paid by the bottom half of taxpayers.
  • The top 1 percent’s income share rose from 20.1 percent in 2019 to 22.2 percent in 2020 and its share of federal income taxes paid rose from 38.8 percent to 42.3 percent.
  • The top 50 percent of all taxpayers paid 97.7 percent of all federal individual income taxes, while the bottom 50 percent paid the remaining 2.3 percent.
  • The 2020 figures include pandemic-related tax items such as the non-refundable part of the first two rounds of Recovery Rebates and the $10,200 unemployment compensation exclusion.

Interesting that you know, so soon after the SOTUS ended, how "the majority of independents" have reacted on this point.

Really? You know for a fact that the GOP wants to cut SS. Yet for the two years dems controlled congress and the presidency nothing was done to shore up SS finances. Neither party is willing to provide the path forward as someone's ox will certainly be gored.

As t the tax cuts for the rich slogan, while the lowering of rates was ill-considered the EITC was raised for the working poor. Limiting the SALT deduction hurt many uber rich and dems want to eliminate it (so do I) as it raised taxes on the rich and upper middle class.

Don't various GOP politicos want to raise the age at which workers qualify for SS?

Don't you know this?

Please at least research before you make claims that came from the left.
IRS data reveal that all income brackets benefited as result of the Trump tax reforms, with the most significant benefits accruing to working- and middle-class filers, not to the wealthiest, as media and Democrats have ceaselessly claimed. For instance, those earning between $50,000 and $100,000 a year had a reduction in taxes of about 17%, while those with $100,000 to $500,000 in income saw their tax bill reduced by about 13%. All working Americans shared in the economic benefits of the 2017 legislation.

Is that a cut in SS? What do dems propose to fix the problem? Anything??
Yeah, it sure as heck would count as a "cut in Social Security".

WSJ reporting, in general, is factual.

However, its opinion and editorial pages generally are not.

Find and bring something here that is from a credible source.

Btw, be sure to include information about which tax cuts expire when - along with information about which tax cuts do NOT expire.

You realize that experts and politicians on both sides know that the Social Security Trust Fund is headed for financial woes. At some point something has to happen to preserve the benefits. If not there will have to be forced cuts down the road. Those who want changes are not wanting to make changes that would harm those on SS now or in the near future. However those coming up the line 15-25-35 years from now are in danger. It has to be fixed and the leadership in the democrat party want to use it for a scare tactic.
The Social Security taxes you now pay go into the Social Security Trust Funds and are used to pay benefits to current beneficiaries. The Social Security Board of Trustees now estimates that based on current law, in 2041, the Trust Funds will be depleted.

Interesting that you avoid what I TALKED about in my post: the fact that GOP politicians want to cut SS benefits.

Interesting, too, that you avoid mentioning that trump and the GOP could have "fixed" SS during the trifecta years. But they chose not to do that....right?

Yeah, it sure as heck would count as a "cut in Social Security".

If you call that a cut then there can be no fixing SS without some sort of cut. It appears that the rope a dope strategy of doing nothing is the surest way to have dep cuts in SS. Luckily (for me) doesn't matter.
