Is the democratic party holding the nation (US) hostage for political reasons?

If a border wall is done correctly, it can stop alot of undesireable things and give the border agents and digital equipment a chance to gain far more control over the border. It can reduce both illegal drugs and illegal immigrants (including criminals and terrorists).

In Europe we need something similar. We need a massive fence/wall and military build-up along the border to Turkey. We need to stop all flows here. We need a good relationship and good cooperation with Russia and we need a large navy and marine presence in the Mediterranean with ships and manpower that is able to return any ships back to the ports where they came from, and help any emergency situation to bring those people not to Europe, but back home to the other side.

Border patrol already has a good bit of control over our border here, given that border crossings and illegal immigration into the US is at a low right now. Unless the economies of those other countries, especially Mexico, greatly decline from where they are now, it is unlikely that we will see border crossings rise to any significant level any time soon. Terrorists are not coming in through border crossings into the US, since it is easier for them to simply fly here than fly to another country, risk capture there, then cross a border here, risking capture as well. Might as well come in through one of the many legal channels available.

There is simply no emergency situation here that necessitates building a wall. Show me some zombies coming in, and I might be willing to say, sure that's emergency, build the wall.

Where do all the drugs come from then? Or do you not acknowledge that there is a drug problem in the US, also from foreign produced drugs? Do they all come over the Canadian border or via the ocean on boats? Or via airplanes?

Most of the drugs come from pharmaceutical companies, since most abused drugs are legal prescription drugs, and even most of our opioid problem comes from overprescribing legal medications.

But studies have shown that most illegal drugs from Mexico come through at legal points of entry, not random, wild border crossings. Other points of entry include water ways, using drop boats, through planes, and through the tunnels. Hell, Mexican drug cartels are simply using people already here to grow Marijuana in our national forests, on our land. It doesn't have to come across. Meth labs, some run by those cartels, exist on this side of the border at least as much as those on the other side.

And drugs still come through the northern borders as well, but not seeing anyone mention putting a wall up there when it would be just as effective.

Also, the illegal drug that is most imported is marijuana. Easy solve for this one, make it legal and control and tax it. A lot less would come through that border because people wouldn't need to get it through illegal means.

Alright, so the US government has shutdown over 5 billion dollars that the democratic party and the "establishment" refuses to grant the US government to spend on the Mexico border. Considering the US government annual spending of 2500 billion dollars per year, of which 5 billion is barely 0.2%, is this a reasonable reason for the democratic party in the US to refuse the spending of 5 billion and to cause the ongoing government shutdown? 5 billion is not even 1% of what the US spends on defence each year. If the demoratic party said yes to the 5 billion spending, the government shutdown would be over immediately. Could they do it? Are there good enough reasons not to do it?
