Even Jimmy "Peanut" Carter was tougher on Russia than Trump.
And yet, when people refer to Russia today, they don't mean the Soviet Union.

Given the president's latest statements on his actions towards, Russia, I thought it should be put to a vote. Ronald Reagan dealt directly with Moscow (Former capital of the USSR/Present capital of Russia) throughout his entire tenure. Is it true that Trump has been tougher than every president before him, Reagan included? The option are as follows:
- Yes, he was tougher than every other president; Reagan included.
- No, he was not tougher than every other president; Reagan was tougher.
- No, he was not tougher than every other presidents; many others were tougher (please provide examples).
- I do not know.
Please note that this threads is for DP members only. Secondly whatever your answer is, the topic of this thread is not a discussion on whether Trump lied, but whether his statements were accurate - as such the answers reflect choices which look at the accuracy of his statements. That is because a person can be inaccurate without necessarily lying.

There's a problem.
You seem to have conflated "Russia" with the "Soviet Union".
This was already addressed with numerous statements explaining that people saw no difference between Russia and the Soviet Union while the Cold War was on-going. I've seen bad hills for bad debaters to die on, but never one like yours. Who do you think controlled Russia and the Soviet Union other than Moscow?
Can't you just change your poll question so it's accurate?
The USSR was little more than a Russian empire with a red coat of paint. I get that you think playing a semantics game will help you dodge your way out of facing facts.....but it's not going to work.
There's a problem.
21 people did not have your problem when answering the poll. Do you still require assistance to answer or can we safely move along?
Asking for reference. Genuinely concerned.
Why did Reagan refer to the USSR as Russia while president? Why did Churchill or any number of world leaders? You are having a tough time with a simple question. 20 other people of various leans did not.I hear ya. Not knowing that the Soviet Union collapsed in the late 80's should concern you.

The numbers should be speaking to you.

Don't be so defensive.
You didn't realize the distinction.
That's okay.
Not fixing the questions ... that's not okay.
Poll questions that reflect actual history might have produced more dependable responses.
But hey, it's your poll.
Some might call it Fake Poll.
It's really just a sloppy mistake.
You are having a tough time answering the question. It's understandable. I would not want to have to defend the assinine claim that he's been tougher than presidents who have passed sanctions on Russia.
20+ people who did not have trouble answering.

You can't depend on the poll answers if the poll questions were flawed.
Besides, you don't even know if Trump was referring only to post 1990 Russia or if he was including pre-1990 Soviet Union.
Makes a big difference.
He may not even know himself, but that doesn't excuse anyone else.
Bubba is trying to give us a lesson on how they are different even though his questions were answered in the first post. Shhhhh.Czarist Russia, Soviet Russia, Putin's Russia ... same mafia state, only in a different dress.
And yet, when people refer to Russia today, they don't mean the Soviet Union.

Weird, I've asserted that the poll isn't flawed and you've simply refused to answer the question.
Do you believe the Gipper was having an Alzheimer's episode when he called the USSR Russia?
You seem pretty unwilling to answer simple questions nobody other than Taylor had trouble with. I would hope you can overcome these difficulties - but I cannot help you until you explain why your answer wouldn't fit any of the options available.
Is it because Obama isn't listed by name? Go on, you can tell us.

Anyone's answer to poll questions about Russia could be different if they knew the pollster thought Soviet Union and Russia were the same.

It's too early to tell whether 'Donald Trump tougher on Moscow (Russia/USSR) than Ronald Reagan was?' Maybe he won't need to be,
maybe he'll need to be, Reagan had eight years let's wait till trump's terms are over before this discussion can be fairly discussed.
IMO Richard Nixon was the greatest foreign policy president in my lifetime & in every instance necessary he had the upper hand
handling Russia, it would be hard for anyone to be properly tougher on Russia than Nixon was, so Trump even given two terms
may not measure up to Nixon, especially when you consider the strength of Russia in Nixon's time may have been at its zenith.
Context matters. I'd bet most people would interpret that statement to include the former Soviet Union. And if you're talking about people who were actually alive when there was a Soviet Union I'd bet that interpretation would be close to universal.
So either the President is once again lying, is delusional, or showing off his well documented inability to use the English language clearly.
