Fauci says it's time to start reopening

I make a motion to upgrade the air filtration systems to HEPA standard or above in public accommodation. High paid labor can stimulate the economy by creating more demand and paying more taxes. Metadata for the general welfare can help improve those systems. Our Health Corps of Engineers can handle it.

Exactly. Why in the world is Fauci encouraging this in any capacity?

From what I see Trump is going to do what Trump wants so Fauci has repeatedly tried to stress that in reopening extreme caution has to be taken. And to not leap frog over the guidelines just to pretend life can be back to normal. We see videos and photos of people no masks, no social distancing and some cities are actually closing down businesses that don't comply.

So I don't see Fauci as being up there yelling open everything now! But instead still maintaining that if people are so hell bent, then wear the masks and continue social distancing.

I wish they'd go back to teaching sentence diagramming

Words mean things.

The quote you offer is different than the thread title you chose.

You said Fauci said it was time to reopen.
The quote you provided said it it's to begin looking at re-opening.

"Now is the time, depending on where you are and what your situation is, to begin seriously looking at reopening the economy,"

Which tastes better?
If a chef makes you some food, or
If a chef begins to look at making you some food?

These sorts of semantic distinctions come up a lot.
Advertisers, politicians, scammers, and other assorted conmen count on these similarities of language to get people to agree to stuff they otherwise wouldn't agree to.
So, it's a useful trick to learn about.

Yes, but should they be? (Also, ALL states are re opening)

Not all, no. But in some places, new infections have stablized or started declining. A phased reopening makes sense in some cases. Allow routine medical procedures and check ups. Let the dentists and chiropracters reopen for people who really need their services. Allow restaurants to reopen with limited capacity and social distance. The thing is, this is the US. We shouldn't need government to shut us down and reopen it if people wouldn't act like ****ing idiots. I have a terrible feeling that lots of people are going to get sick where we've seen them shoulder to shoulder in bars, on beaches, and in parks. The people who ran out on the first day to get haircuts and manicures with no masks honestly deserve to get sick. Selfish, inconsiderate people ruin it for all of us.

Yes, obviously the lockdown is harmful, and the goal is to find a reasonable compromise. There are too many Democrats who can only see one side of it, especially if they have plenty of money and are not being inconvenienced too much themselves.

You cannot approach conservatives from a reasonable position.

Because you will end up with a less reasonable one when you're done.

Because they think being reasonable is just what beta soy boys do.

Something like that, but Rahm Emanuel doesn't speak for the Democratic party any more than Steve King speaks for the Republicans. Cherry picking stupid quotes is not an effective debate tactic.

Some people have been so steeped in political muck that they don't just envision those that differ with them as having different political views but that they are actually evil.

Then they become the evil they project toward their political opponents, actively trying to ascribe the worst motivations to others as if their hysterical fantasies are facts.

You can in fact approach what is reasonable about a conservative position from a reasonable perspective.

You just have to ignore it if they choose to not reason with you.

Let's say you have a son who gets a gf and at 15 he decides he's ready to have sex. You have several discussions telling him no, there are a lot of risks which includes getting his gf pregnant. It's like every single day he tells you they're going to do it and you can't stop him. And of course you realize outside of locking him in the basement for 3 years he's actually right. So with that you tell him to AT LEAST use a condom.

Are you encouraging him to have sex?

There you go - right off the bat they admit all of their "news" is nothing but pushing an extremely biased agenda with no interest in accuracy. So you can safely assume nothing is true except crumb-sized sound bytes.

What if your 15 year old decides to drive drunk. Do you tell him to drive the speed limit, which roads are less patrolled and to keep a box of mints in the car in case he gets pulled over by the cops? Or do you tell him to not do it, period, because he will probably kill someone, or himself? And everytime he asks, you tell him no, period.

No one can stop someone hell bent on doing something stupid, but they can decide to not encourage it.

Covidiots have been spreading this for months. If we were disciplined enough to stop it on an individual level, we probably could. But instead people ride subways and keep their hair salons open and re open their car factories even as this virus rages across the globe. That is why stuff was shutdown, and even then Covidiots have been spreading it. 100K people who thought that they were invincible are dead, and many more to come, sadly.

You can actually control whether he drives unless he's out stealing cars. And if that's the case have him arrested.

You're right... 40 million + jobs lost in the span of 60 days isn't a problem.

Clearly you don't know the definition of sarcasm.

How come you only see with your myopic eye? I see repubs and dems doing it and not doing it.

You just have to ignore it if they choose to not reason with you.

I was talking more about negotiation situations, but yes.

I guess Trump cultists have totally co-opted the term 'conservative'.

They are clearly and truly right-wing in the traditional and historical sense.
They own that label fair and square, but not in the way most of them openly imagine they own it.

The Trump supporters who are cultists have removed themselves from reality.
  • Some routinely choose to give more credence to politicians than to subject matter experts.
  • If facts are unpleasant, some willfully choose to ignore the facts rationalizing the ignorance by saying the bearer of the facts dislikes Trump.
  • Some have invented new categories of truth just so they won't have to acknowledge that Trump lied to them.

These people cannot be reasoned with.
At least not on the subject of Trump and Trumpco.
I suspect they are reasonably rational on other issues.

Their beliefs should be openly ridiculed early and often.
That's what democracy and freedom of speech are all about.

OK? Most states are re-opening.
True, and the left is bombarding the news with scare stories about spiking infections and deaths. Michigan's governor just extended her lockdown. Even on DP there's a few threads screaming to stop opening efforts and get everyone back into their homes.

Fauci has been fairly negative to opening moves for a while so now having him even suggest it's time to "look" at it is major.

Sounds great.

Montgomery, Ala., Runs Low on ICU Beds as Coronavirus Cases Surge - WSJ

Georgia COVID-19 cases rise to 41,482; death total at 1,808 - News - Savannah Morning News - Savannah, GA

Florida coronavirus cases near 50,000 as state adds 46 deaths

Live updates: Texas coronavirus cases surge since reopening - Business Insider

At this point I say open the whole country open up as Trump is pushing and not with precautions like Fauci is suggesting. Let the chips fall where they may. I'd venture to say the majority of people that end up running out to socialize, may catch it and then possibly die will be the same people who would be flocking to a Trump rally if he had the balls to actually hold one. Maybe they can get some cool little Trump shaped hydroxychloroquine tablets as a parting gift.

Florida added 46 deaths. Is that not good news compared to other death totals in other big states?

Stop the clickbait BS!

I have just enough money to pay taxes (even with my stimulus check, which has not arrived yet). My inconveniences are minor compared to what many other people are dealing with and I totally understand that. However, I am sure that nobody who loved and lost a cat would say being unable to adopt a new one now is just an inconvenience. Every day I think, "I need a cat." When I think about wanting the lockdown to end, my first thought is always "so I can get a cat."

Did you hear everything he told Congress on national television? Very conservative news sources cherry-pick what they like while keeping the context a secret. Their real mission is to make more people vote for Republicans, especially if all of those candidates are at the far right of the political spectrum.
