In a recent discussion of abortion, I was reminded by a philosophical ally that there are those who have faith AND believe in human rights for women. It got me thinking about the difference, not really in the definition of faith, but how its applied. It seems to me there are two ways that faith exists.
For some people their faith is a product of their morality and, by learning the truth, they come to know god. For others, their morality is a product of faith and truth is a pre-existing shape to which reality must be molded. No doubt, some people possess such a rigid idea of morality and faith that no new information can be allowed to challenge it. Others are happy to see their morality and faith evolve with the addition of new facts.
So, my question is, does anyone believe that what their god prefers can be different than what makes sense for human, civil society? Or, do you believe that what is right for humans MUST naturally be consistent with morality and adjust your faith accordingly.
Would you describe your faith as rigid or flexible and how does that make it work better for you?
How do you reconcile your faith when what your faith demands is inconsistent with what you or others need to be happy?
Just curious...
My belief is that God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, sets the conditions, and his word is supreme. He is the un-judged, judge.
1) I am a Christian, so that means I follow Jesus Christ, and the Bible is the living word of God, and that we were given salvation through Grace on the cross, where an eternally perfect being, died to atone for the sin of mankind, eternally.
2) I believe in the God of the Bible, and therefore all information must filter through HIS word.
3) My belief is Rigid, in the sense that, I believe our flesh (desires/weaknesses) is at war with our soul.
4) I obviously believe God's existence is factual. If it is a fact, what I believe, then it remains a fact regardless of how I (or any human) feel about it. It is independent of our input, we don't have a vote.
5) I have a humble spirit, and mind toward God. I admit I do/desire to do wrong, and that I am at a disadvantage in my current condition, and environment. In order to judge God, we would all need to have complete knowledge of all true facts, and without that any judgment against God is meaningless.
Lastly, is it your belief that the purpose for our existence is to be happy here on earth? I do not believe that (I am not saying that I am not happy, its more my indictment of what the world sells as happiness). If that makes sense. Christianity answers the four most fundamental questions to existence more coherently than any other religion, imho:
1) Origin- Where did we come from?
2) Meaning- Why are we here?
3) Morality- What is the nature of good and evil?
4) Destiny- Where do we go after we die?
