I am grateful. And I am even more grateful because I came from poor parents and was poor myself in my younger years. I used to be a Democrat and I remember working for $2.65 per hour in 1978 and waiting for the minimum wage to go up so that I could earn more money. By 1981 it had gone all the way up to $3.35 per hour. That was an increase of $28 per week (woohoo) and you know what? I realized that if I was going to waste my life waiting for minimum wage to go up in order to make more money I was always going to be poor because minimum wage is minimum wage. I realized the Democratic way was poverty so I changed parties, grabbed the bull by the horn, and set out to earn more than minimum wage. I am where I am today because I'm a doer, not a taker and I refused to live in a cycle of poverty to carry on generation to generation. Liberalism does not work. It gives people a huge crutch to never have the incentive to make themselves better. It is a gimmee mentality of being jealous of the rich and thinking that the rich don't deserve it and that they should give some of it to me, even though I didn't do anything to earn it. They should just give it to me because it is their obligation to take care of me.
Your story is valid (for YOU) but in all honesty it is nevertheless the story of someone who failed at liberalism, and that in and of itself does not a representation of liberalism make.
All it does is detail what liberalism was to you and you only.
I've been a liberal my entire 61 years on this Earth.
Aside from 3 bags of groceries from a food bank during a rough patch when I was a student, I've never once been on welfare or food stamps.
Unlike you I didn't wait around for minimum wage to rise. I was able to get promoted.
Those minimum wage jobs, however, were enough for me to afford a 1 room flop, a crappy used truck, a phone and enough food.
In other words, even though they were minimum wage, they were opportunities, and I spent those opportunities learning how to move up.
I wouldn't dream of attempting to change your view of liberalism, it's too central to your defense mechanism that you use to characterize the less fortunate as takers.
The only disservice you do is to yourself, because I wager that you get taken on a regular basis by the REAL TAKERS.
After all, if someone is going to BE a "taker", most of the time they're going to try to be good at it, really good at it.
You identified YOURSELF with the quote:
"It gives people a huge crutch to never have the incentive to make themselves better. It is a gimmee mentality of being jealous of the rich and thinking that the rich don't deserve it and that they should give some of it to me, even though I didn't do anything to earn it." That's YOUR story, not mine.
You're the one that spent 1978 to 1981 being jealous of the wealthy and thinking that they should just give it to you.
I spent 1978 to 1981 as a keyboard player in a moderately successful rock band, and earning more on the side running a rehearsal space.
We did pretty well. We earned every penny and lived it up like the "rock stars" we were.
I spent every year since 1982 working in film and TV, starting out as a rookie on a local PBS show in Orange County, CA.
Even when my editing and duplication business got wiped out in the 1994 Northridge Quake, I didn't go on welfare.
I'm wealthy now, but I want my KIDS to have the kind of minimum wage opportunity that allows them to get a leg up and get on that ladder.
They'll do it too, but they need the OPPORTUNITY, the STARTING OUT opportunity.
Liberals don't want people to GIVE them STUFF, they want OPPORTUNITIES.
The trouble is, not only are you a failed liberal, you're also a failed conservative, because you have that tunnel vision problem.
By that I mean, if it didn't happen to you, you can't even see it.
It's like when Nancy Reagan was opposed to stem cell research, until Ronnie developed Alzheimer's, then suddenly she was for it.
It's like when Dick Cheney was against gay marriage, until his daughter came out. Then suddenly he was for it.
A REAL conservative takes an honest look at an issue and decides whether it deserves a bold stake or an abundance of caution.
The truth is, you don't know a single real life case of an actual liberal demanding free stuff, except yourself.
The reason you're such a soulless angry right wing paranoid is because you're ashamed at what a rotten liberal you were, so you're going to take it out on all the liberals you meet instead, to make yourself feel better.
Pro Tip: There are a lot of you out there.
Know why?
Because it really IS difficult to be a REAL liberal, it takes a lot of hard work and a lot of commitment to real principles.
Any jerk can just stand around pissing all over those less fortunate than themselves.
It takes no smarts and no dedication to principles whatsoever, it only takes a urine stream.
