(CNN) US tomato prices could jump as soon as Monday

On July 14, a nearly three-decade-old US-Mexico trade agreement may give way to 20.9% tariffs on most Mexican tomato imports.
The Tomato Suspension Agreement has been in place since 1996, essentially setting a floor for tomato imports. The Commerce Department announced in April it was withdrawing from the agreement because the “current agreement has failed to protect U.S. tomato growers from unfairly priced Mexican imports,” according to a statement. That, in turn, will result in the 20.9% duties on most Mexican tomato imports.

No, this is not some general economic prediction of some economist concerning generalized inflation due to on-again, off-again, maybe, maybe-not, tariffs

It appears a 21% tariff, specifically & exclusively on Mexican tomatoes, will go into place at 12:01A.M. tonight.

It's little known, and kinda' quirky, but apparently the U.S. & Mexico have been party to something known as the - get this - "Tomato Suspension Agreement"! For the past three decades!

It appears in April, the Trump Administration has decided to unilaterally withdraw us from this agreement. This will result in an immediate 21% tariff going into effect on Monday (14 JLY).

So perhaps with this little niche tariff occurring, we will finally see what amount of tariffs get passed on to the American consumer. Wholesalers are indicating they will have to pass-on a minimum of 10%.

I suppose we shall very soon see. I see this as the "Canary in the Coalmine", for what future tariffs may bring if ever duly applied.

Haha!

Yeah, we'll finally get a chance to see how much in tariffs get passed on to the consumer. No TACO possibility here, that I'm aware.

Are you trying to make a pun about taco sauce or not, I can't tell?

We have a couple of plants. I grow them just for fun. Lots of local farmstands in our area too should we run out.

You know who won't pay 20.9% more for Mexican tomatoes? All other countries they export them to including Canada.

not for long...

Tired of all the winning yet?

I'd come up and visit, but I'm hesitant that the good Canucks can make a Bolognese that will meet my stringent approval!

Though I must admit, Quebec pizza was pretty creative. The BBQ sucked, though. "Smoked Meat" was reasonable, and somewhat unique. Not as good as a good Pastrami, though.

Tomatoes?

Mexico dumped tomatoes over the threat of tariffs and drove the price of tomatoes down such that Florida farmers could not compete. And of course the immigration crackdown resulted in a lack of workers to pick them.

Between this & the threat of a 30% tariff hike on Mexico & the EU, a good guess as to what the markets are gonna be doing tomorrow.

My family grew everything when I was a kid, and I tended more garden than I care to remember, hating every minute of it.

But you know, reading your post, I now wonder why I don't consider putting-in a few Beefsteaks. There's nothing like a fresh-off-the-vine ripe tomato. Especially during BLT season!

Canadia does ethnic food right. Some of the best cuisine I've had is in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. Tends to be a little more authentic than what you get in the States, though you can get legit ethnic food in the US if you know where to go.

Everything Trump touches, becomes a mess.

The only good thing he did was harden-up the border, which I'll give him credit for. If his numbers can be believed. I'm still cautious with that.

Wasted food? American farmers screwed?

Nothing better than homegrown anything! Especially with all that rich black soil Midwest is best known for. That and their good looking men. I can say this, my man is fully Midwest grown. ;)

True story. A bird must have dropped a seed on the side of a hill on our property because we didn't plant this particular bush. We had the most delicious grape tomatoes for the entire summer.

As long as I've been alive, the tomato based product industry has relied on migrant workers. He has probably already put a stick in the spokes.

DOW Futures are down a couple hundred, as we speak. So, not really too bad.

Futures down 150 points as we speak. That seems optimistic.

CNN is always presenting the worst case scenario on the tariffs.

Serious doubt tomato prices will go up by 20%. Someone might make that assumption after reading the CNN article
