(CNN) US tomato prices could jump as soon as Monday

Futures down 150 points as we speak. That seems optimistic.

The markets seem to be getting numb to both the reality and the lack of follow through on these kinds of things.

If the bottom eventually drops out on the markets they aren't going to look pretty for a while and it's going to catch a lot of complacent people.

Good for you
What about the rest of the US population that is not so fortunate?
I'm just relating my experience. Must everything be a contest with some of you?
How about you do a bit of self-introspection before barking at me, but if you are truly serious with your question, there is a safety net in this country. It's called charitable food banks and government, tax funded general welfare programs for those truly in need.

Canadia does ethnic food right. Some of the best cuisine I've had is in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. Tends to be a little more authentic than what you get in the States, though you can get legit ethnic food in the US if you know where to go.

Yeah, it's been awhile I've been up there, mostly Toronto & Montreal. Quite honestly, I forgot about Vancouver.

I thought the Chinese on Yonge Street in Toronto was pretty good. but not so good in Montreal.

Neither had great Italian, IMO. Not as good as Chicago & NY, and by that I'm speaking to Mom & Pop restaurants and Delis.

But my time up there was limited, so I pretty much wandered more than sought-out. So, I might have missed the really good stuff.

Oh, great steak in Calgary. I will say that. In fact, Canadian Chicken in general is much better than the stuff below the 49th, too. Apparently Canada doesn't allow the highly hormonalized stuff we do in the States. And what's with KFC delivery well into the wee hours?

ok

no. It is interesting your post is about you and what you have and no mention of those who are not as fortunate.

Hope you support and contribute to them.

You could have answered my question by stating those who don't have can use the food banks.
Sorry you took it so personal.

Thought President Trump said he was going to cut cost of living and food costs for all of us. This does not seem to be happening.

Very true! Most Americans do know where to go.

Oh just stop or continue, I don't care. Worry more about what you do. I don't see you contributing much in the way of non-partisanship to this thread.

When it comes to tomatoes, nothing beats locally grown. The imported ones are engineered to survive shipping, and they have all the flavor of cardboard.

ITA! We have a local who grows their own and markets them locally. They call 'em killer tomatoes for good reason. None of that engineering stuff involved.

My family grew everything when I was a kid, and I tended more garden than I care to remember, hating every minute of it.

My mother offered some pitiful amount per tomato (horn)worm I picked off the plants and sliced in half.

Those creatures were too ugly, and the price too low to even consider the horror of that labor.

At nine years old I was a horrible agricultural worker.

On the other hand those zucchini plants, and those flowers (!!) were the eighth wonder of the world.

Nothing better than homegrown anything! Especially with all that rich black soil Midwest is best known for. That and their good looking men. I can say this, my man is fully Midwest grown. ;)

True story. A bird must have dropped a seed on the side of a hill on our property because we didn't plant this particular bush. We had the most delicious grape tomatoes for the entire summer.

That is a great story.

When I lived in the city, on a very busy urban block with a major arterial bus-stop on one corner, and an el-station on the other, we had all kinds of weird plants sprout-up in our front yard, including Watermelon and an Apple Tree!

It was humanoid induced I believe, by all the foot traffic walking past on the front sidewalk!

Of course, come next February nothing locally grown will be around. All our delis and sandwich shops depend heavily on imported tomatoes.

I edited my post while you were posting.

imo, President Trump and his tariffs are going to drive up food prices for all of us. This is not a partisan comment. It is my opinion of seeing the cost of some groceries go up compared to 12 months ago.

Yes, I realize this. Hopefully by next February, prices will be down.

CNN is always presenting the worst case scenario on the tariffs.

Serious doubt tomato prices will go up by 20%. Someone might make that assumption after reading the CNN article

My OP Article made no such claim as the bolded. The Article cited a 21% tariff, which appears to be accurate when I crossed-checked against other sources.

But a wholesaler is claiming they need to pass on 10% of that.

That's my take, as well.

The Markets fully expect TACO'ing.

However the day may come where analysis of arriving data shows it's all catching-up, and the bottom falls out.

Not guaranteed, but possible.

Yes the wholesaler will increase their prices.

No, this is not some general economic prediction of some economist concerning generalized inflation due to on-again, off-again, maybe, maybe-not, tariffs

It appears a 21% tariff, specifically & exclusively on Mexican tomatoes, will go into place at 12:01A.M. tonight.

It's little known, and kinda' quirky, but apparently the U.S. & Mexico have been party to something known as the - get this - "Tomato Suspension Agreement"! For the past three decades!

It appears in April, the Trump Administration has decided to unilaterally withdraw us from this agreement. This will result in an immediate 21% tariff going into effect on Monday (14 JLY).

So perhaps with this little niche tariff occurring, we will finally see what amount of tariffs get passed on to the American consumer. Wholesalers are indicating they will have to pass-on a minimum of 10%.

I suppose we shall very soon see. I see this as the "Canary in the Coalmine", for what future tariffs may bring if ever duly applied.
Paid $1.99 /lb the other day. I think I can dig up another 20 cents. 🥱

Are you hoping for things to be bad for our country, not yours, but ours?
That is the intention of the retaliatory tariffs many countries have enacted - do as much damage to the US economy as possible.

Very true! Most Americans do know where to go.

Like, I always go to Olive Garden for fine Italian dining, as any American would know.

It's either there or Satriale's.

Or Domino's.
