The plagiarism at Harper’s was not an isolated incident. Hedges has a history of lifting material from other writers that goes back at least to his first book, War Is A Force That Gives Us Meaning, published in 2002. He has echoed language from Nation author Naomi Klein. He has lifted lines from radical social critic Neil Postman. He has even purloined lines from Ernest Hemingway.

The fact-checker told me, “Not only was the plagiarism more egregious than I had seen before, but it was shocking how unapologetic Hedges was when it was put in his face. He got very heavy-handed about it. He kept claiming that the people quoted in the Katz piece gave him the exact same quotes.”

According to Ross and the fact-checker, Hedges then tried to circumvent their questions by appealing privately to Harper’s publisher Rick MacArthur, who at the time was a personal friend.

I got just past the 25 second mark...the part where he began with "When things get bad..." and talks about the "Elites retreat in their gated compounds...", when I stopped and did some looking around since I have no idea who this guy is.

Here's what I found...

Seems to me that states forcing people to stay home and arresting and/or fining them if they leave their homes, is a lot more fascist (if we insist on using the term) than anything Trump is doing or has done.

Chris Hedges has made a career of calling everyone to the right of him a fascist for decades. So this is just more of the same partisan hyperbolic bilgewater. Hedges' vacuousness is so great and powerful that not even light can escape it.

No excuses should ever be made for obvious plagiarism.

New Republic is a serious journal that takes pride in its craft. It's no small coincidence that credible allegations of plagiarism almost always originate from legitimate (i.e. "mainstream") news sources...and almost never from the alt-right/conservative media where fake news is the standard, rather than the rare exception.

Now, that said, I must admit to getting a nice chuckle from Hawkeye's dismissive remarks. After all, few Americans would be inclined to take "morality lessons" from a Trump acolyte, either. :cool:

More importantly, however...the content of the video in the OP has nothing to do with plagiarism. There is no doubt that Trump has very strong fascist and authoritarian tendencies...nor that Trump is steering this country in that direction.

Hedges is one of the most important moral voices in the world; and very sadly, as your link shows, he appears guilty of plagiarism as well. It's a bit like the 'JFK was a great moral force in the presidency, who also had a problematic sex life' issue. Or the 'Martin Luther King was a great moral force who also had a problematic sex life' issue. Errors are bad, but don't undo the great things people do.
