China retaliates with tariffs on $75 billion of US goods

Sounds very nice, but almost impossible to do. There are not many countries that are more driven by "consuming consumers". The problem is that there are not many other sources for a lot of that which Americans crave most, stuff.

You can only do that if you are able to:

1. convince your countrymen/women to stop consuming so much
2. convince them to spend more and get less from other countries (less because it will cost more than the Chinese products so you will be able to consume less, something that most will see as undesirable)
3. start making all the stuff China is making back in the US. But than point 2 comes up again, it will cost more, people will be able to buy less and that is not what consuming is all about

And the economic pain will be more than just "some".
Good luck convincing Americans to pay higher prices to support our own corporations' profits.

Which the last three presidents lacked. Bill for not nailing down the details of “Fair trade and honesty”; George for ignoring it; Barrack for ignoring it.

If Hillary won, what would it have been? Trump “light” or “heavy”, or a payoff to the Clinton Foundation and a few speeches by Bill? Sadly, that is a fair question to ask.

Trump is the right man at the right time. “He has been chosen by the mysterious fate that seems to throw America a life line, just when she needs it”. (Insert video of exploding TDS heads, here.) I <3 2 LOL @TDS’ers, but with understanding and compassion.

LOL! Exactly.

However the Leftist America haters are really sad for their Communist Chinese counterparts.

Saying we told you so about this ill-conceived trade war is sweet but do not blame us because you will not listen. No one EVER has won a trade war.
Yep. But they did get us into several real-life world wars! Let's not forget that ...

I'm constantly amazed that some seemingly otherwise educated and intelligent people suffer total mental freeze whenever Trump is involved; they cheer for recession predictions, diplomatic setbacks, attribute superior mental capacities to scub like Kim, etc. just because Trump is involved.

It's one thing not to approve of a president's policy as that might be resolved by voting in 2020, but to continue with the hateful propaganda that Trump is in this trade war for any other reason than in the long run, (opposing China's intellectual dishonesty and our trade imbalance with them), is the right thing to do. Some president had to do it! Why not Trump? Oh, because it's Trump... exactly why I call a lot of the replies on this thread nothing but self-serving phony outrage.

trump has already said this for himself, while alt-trumpists laugh it off as trolling.
I strongly suspect the dictator-in-chief is going to order the Fed to tank the dollar. He sees where the economy is going along with his electability, and he's going to wage this reality show fight into the election.

Just imagine the daunting task our next President will have? And some things are broke, likely never to come back. No way is China ever going to fully re-establish soybean trading with us, after now establishing new infrastructure around the world. Thanks, Trump!

A Chinese company is looking at dredging a major river in Argentina, to allow for bulk transport of agricultural goods from further inland by barge. That will make shipping from Argentina much cheaper than it currently is. Also look for a major port investment by China in Argentina to make shipping into and out of Argentina more efficient (nothing announced and purely my speculation on that). Argentina and Brazil have the capacity to supply China with all the soybeans, and cattle that China would ever need. The US purchases were I expect political in nature, to reduce the trade deficit and gain support from US elected leaders

What you think they will go to nuclear war? Well then we all die including them. They will cease to exist at that point because we can glass their entire country. Mutually assured destruction.

you openly interfere in Hong Kong and with the Uyghurs then that will be China's response ... it will not involve the EU we will have no part in it

the tariffs imposed by china was the opening shot on the new arms trade deal with Taipei early this week ... China said they would respond today is the opening shot from China

I don't support his tweets from this morning just like I don't support a lot of his tweets and other such effluvium.
Let's the archives be your friend....

how did you do with our little thought experiment, though?

Removing the ability of a president to unilaterally initiate a global trade war needs to be high on the list of the next congress. Enough of this ****.

So you're okay with China screwing us over economically with currency manipulations, Cyber/HUMINT industrial espionage and IP theft just to name a few?

Losing a trade war with China will not help us one bit and it is clear that Trump has no plan to win and never did.

I'll be sure to give your "informed" opinion ever bit of respect it richly deserves...

Whether you agree with ethanol or not, EPA Wheeler convinced trump to give ethanol waivers to 31 more oil refineries, after the previous 50. Wheeler is much more dangerous than the buffoon Pruitt.

Sen. ‘no hearings on Garland’ Grassley is upset over this, trying to protect Sen. Ernst from angry corn farmers in Iowa. Democratic challenger Theresa Greenfield has a real shot at impotent Ernst next year.

how is it Trumpets are blind to all this?

the only way to solve trade issues with the world is to let one person do it with no oversight? yeah, that sounds not American. no thanks.

That's in part, a specific response to Trump's tariffs - at least in terms of soybeans.

Manufacturing down, steel plants laying off workers, Bond inversions, GDP growth estimated a 2.3% and dropping and wait until consumers see that they are paying the tariffs. These are what is making Trump act even more insane.

Consumer is O.K., but manufacturing slipping, which eventually bleeds into the consumer. In addition, the global economy is slowing due in part to Trump. Sorry, but unless the dynamics change, I see a slowing of the U.S. economy.

A "slowing of the growth" of manufacturing isn't a bad thing.

Trump has already alienated European support! :doh

We could have stood united via TPP. Now, we're on our own here. Trump is re-ordering the world order established under the Marshal Plan, and not in a good way!

buddy since day 1 he has set out to cause conflict and confrontation where there was none even with America's allies, he is unhinged ... no love for either for Trump's wee fat pal Kim , but he was right when he called Trump a dotard/geriatric, his tweets early today proves one thing he is not fit to be US president the job of US president is to bring people together he does the exact opposite ... i am not religious but i will pray for some sanity within the political classes in Washington

you saying America hasn't being doing the same via the NSA ... Edward Snowden says otherwise as do companies like Samsung and Siemens of Germany for a start

people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones

You haven't been keeping up with the latest data. Manufacturing contracted for the first time in a decade:

The U.S. manufacturing PMI (purchasing managers index) was 49.9 in August, below the neutral 50.0 threshold for the first time since September 2009, according to IHS Markit.

New orders received by manufacturers dropped the most in 10 years, while the data also showed export sales tanked to the lowest level since August 2009, the data shows.

If the Electoral College vote is close and goes to a Democrat, you ain’t seen nothing yet with trump turmoil and his refusal to turn over power. The recent appellate ruling on faithless electors could prevent either candidate from having 270 EVs.

Then, it’s the 12th amendment and contingent elections. Each state gets one House vote for President, which will favor trump. If Dems flip the Senate, that would give us a Dem VP with trump.

Bannon is smiling at the deconstruction of our Nation, along with Putin of course. The key figures for trump, IMO, are Miller, Pence, and Parscale.

Oh, I'm sure Trump, Bannon, and their crowd want all you describe - and more!

But they won't get it. Trump will leave as required.

And what is this "faithless electors" case you speak of?

It was not until post WW2 that the president had term limits. Most European countries do not have term limits on there PM's or Presidents. Merkel could have for instance served for life if elected each and every election as PM

So, Trump for life if he wants?
