Cancel Culture: Goya Foods CEO calls boycott threats a 'suppression of speech'

I agree, but it seems crazy to stop buying a (preferred?) brand of canned beans based on the company owner's political views.

I prefer the store brand typically (love black beans especially).. cost less and a black bean is a black bean... It's what you do with them that counts... dammit... now I have to make migas with black beans for breakfast...

Yep, I often go with a lower cost brand if the product serves my needs. My point was that I don't care what the company owner's political views are or where that company is located.

Agreed to a point... Just don't go near my tortillas or tamales... It could get ugly...

J.K. Rowling, Noam Chomsky among dozens to call for end to ‘cancel culture’ | nypost.com

More than 100 writers and scholars — including Noam Chomsky, J.K. Rowling and Malcolm Gladwell — have signed a public letter decrying cancel culture and the rising “intolerance of opposing views.”

Published in Harper’s Magazine on Tuesday, the letter argued that the recent “needed reckoning” on racial and social justice has also “intensified a new set of moral attitudes and political commitments” that tend to stifle the norms of public debate and tolerating differences.

“The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted,” the letter states.

It warns that censorship, while something “we have come to expect this on the radical right,” is also spreading more widely on the left through “an intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism, and the tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty.”

“The democratic inclusion we want can be achieved only if we speak out against the intolerant climate that has set in on all sides.”

ONCE we get Trump out, and especially when we imprison him, things will calm down. HE has caused ALL THIS strife, so shut the **** up about the repurcussions, I say.

How DARE citizens exercise their right to free speech about the speech of other citizens!

How DARE citizens vote with their wallets!

Right wingers are entitled to say whatever they want free of consequence!

JAIL EVERYONE WHO REFUSES TO BUY GOYA'S PRODUCTS! JAIL EVERYONE WHO CRITICIZED ITS CEO!

It'd be nice if at least one of you Trumpists understood the right you pretend to whine about.

So, any business that openly supports Trump should be boycotted? LMAO

That's some scary fascism there.

Too bad his store is in downtown Los Angeles. A little too far for me or I would shop there all the time.

They are, and it does. It seems a lot of Americans who live in big cities have decided they no longer care to share the country with the vast, agricultural regions that feed them, build their structures, and man their defenses. You know, the common causes of the nation? But cancel them, you know, because they support the president and hold moral values outside the ever-shifting whims of liberal orthodoxy.

"hold moral values" :lamo

Citizens United turned that corp into a person, I don't want my dollars potentially going to support someone that may use those dollars against me, politically.

Goya Foods CEO Robert Unanue calls boycott threats following his praise of Trump a 'suppression of speech' | businessinsider.com

It's becoming ridiculous. The left are attempting to stifle thought, opinion, and speech.

This has to stop.

What a load of crap ..... GOYA is the one trying to suppress speech, opinion and thought ....... abso fuc-ing lutely.

The USA is not blessed with a big mouth rude Trump which is why some ALEC GOP folks are actively campaigning against Trump. Only because they fear losing upcoming elections however they will always be
crappy low life politicians.

His store in downtown Los Angeles? LMAO. Do you have any idea what Goya even is?

Would you consider Christianity a moral value system? Irrespective of your own opinions, you should at least recognize that there are popularly practiced moral and ethical systems in this nation that are additional to, if not directly counter to, secular humanism and intersectionality.

Most of that vast agriculture you talk about is owned by corporations who build their headquarters in big cities. Why do you suppose that is?

Fine by me, just don't expect everyone to share your political views.

Must have started when Moochelle invited the Goya guy to the White House ... /s

and...........??

Goya is a corporation headquartered in Jersey City, NJ... Annual revenues of around $1.5B.... They don't have a "shop in downtown Los Angeles"...

Can you say "hypocrisy". I'll bet you can but there are those who apparently don't quite comprehend the meaning of the word.

This is the way of the left. They are good at what they do, but what they do isn't good. They claim they are are for free speech, free thought, diversity and equality. Yet, they are constantly denying that to others who disagree with their ideas. They call people racist, misogynist, white supremacist and a host of other things without any other reason than they disagree with liberal positions, or BLM positions or democrat positions and so on. Until the democrats, leftist and socialist, closet communist, anarchist all decide a true conversation is the only way to move forward things will only continue to get worse.

Destroy a mans business, because he supports Trump?....boycott his foods, suppress his speech....There is something inherently wrong with a group of people who support what they are doing here, support the destroying of monuments across the country, encourage protests and riots during a pandemic, et al. These are NOT the kinds of people we need as leaders of this country, who support law breakers....VOTE them out!

This kind of authoritarian behavior is right out of Stalin's playbook. Can you imagine what these idiots would do if they ever gained political control of the country? We'd end up a 3rd world ****-hole with the economy of Venezuela, and the suppressive tactics of Castro's Cuba.

Ted Cruz said his Nike boycott was exerting free speech, but says people boycotting Goya Foods are silencing speech

Can you provide some evidence for that? Because most farms are still family-owned operations (but account for only about half of all market production, which is worth noting). Drive in the flatlands outside your city and count the Trump signs. Those aren't big corporate fat cats idling their tractors in roadside barns.

Have you forgotten all the times this was done by republicans in the past, or at least called for to be done.

They just don't understand how it's supposed to work. Remember the Starbucks boycott when they ordered drinks under trump's name.
