California now leads the nation in job creation, projected $1 billion surplus

Largest wealth creators in Cali are oil, banks, pharma, and then IT. Hardly the bastion of liberal economic success. You basically have a bunch of capitalist pigs trying to outrun the liberal takers. Success for now but how long can it last?

California also has a multi billion dollar agricultural economy. It produces 80% of the world's almonds, along with fruit, veges, and nuts of all sorts. How long will that last? As long as the water holds out. This year should give it a bit of a boost.

Again, you ignore the link I gave you as that link is available for ALL states and tells you exactly where the Federal Money goes. The Federal Govt. spends money on mandates to the states thus there are no handouts per the liberal rhetoric to the contrary. When anyone claims that a state gets more back than they give that is out of context rhetoric ignoring where the dollars go that the Federal Taxpayers pay the state

Can you explain why the only true liberal part of the state is the coastal areas where the big population centers are and the agricultural part of the state is mostly red?

Translation: I refuse to admit red states in general are an impoverished mess.

You mean to say that Mississippi has more federal mandates than California does, and so that's why they get more federal dollars?

No, I'm not sure just why that is, but it is.

Mississippi has low population and a lot of people on federally mandated welfare such as Medicaid which is both state and federal supported but your statement isn't back by actual dollars but rather as a percentage of GDP which you have to explain why that is relevant.

Blue state, red face: Guess who benefits more from your taxes?

No, I'm not sure just why that is, but it is.

Yes it is which distorts what is happening in California, most of the agricultural area of the state is Red whereas the liberal bastions of illegals and entitlement crowds are in the population centers. The workers, the agricultural centers are being governed by the takers in the entitlement crowd. I do hope California secedes and allows the major parts of the state that don't subscribe to the entitlement mentality of the coast have a chance to do with W. Va. did

Why is the GDP more relevant than the total dollar amount?
Could be the population and the productivity of the state. A billion dollars in California amounts to less than $30 per capita, whereas in Mississippi it's a lot more, plus there is a lot more wealth here, so it's more easily affordable.

Now, about the OP: We've been talking about debt, but not so much about jobs that pay a living wage. If California is producing high paying jobs, then that debt won't matter so much. If it's really going the way of Mississippi, then the debt is a huge problem.

No, GDP reflects the entire economy which is mostly private sector driven and has nothing to do with the federal dollars going to the state until you look at what those dollars fund.

What California has done is dug itself quite a hole by creating the entitlement mentality there and somehow has to address the 400 PLUS billion dollar debt, a 1 billion dollar surplus will take decades to pay off. Doubt seriously there is going to be a Federal Govt. bailout under Trump

The state of California does have way too much welfare, no doubt abut that, but the meme that the state is going down the tubes just doesn't meet the smell test of reality. It still has the eighth largest GDP in the world, larger than that of Russia.

Would the state be better off without so many people on the dole? No doubt about that. Is it really in trouble economically as a result? No.

Ignoring the 400 PLUS billion in debt, the highest number of people in poverty in the country, among the highest cost of living in the nation and touting a 1 billion dollar budget surplus doesn't meet with reality

After 8 years of a failed GOP governor, looks like things are finally starting to turn around in the Golden State under Governor Jerry Brown's leadership. :peace

Hoover creates a mess, FDR has to clean up.

Reagan/Bush Senior create a mess, Clinton has to clean up.

Dumbya Bush Jr. creates a mess, Obama has to clean up.

Arnold creates a mess, Jerry Brown has to clean up.

Anyone else see a pattern here?

I guess that they don't need those Fed. funds for the dam then....

A billion dollar budget surplus sounds great until you divide by the population and see that it amounts to about $30 per person. In a state this large, it's pretty much meaningless, but it is better than a huge deficit.

While California may have the highest number of people in poverty in the country, as you keep saying, it also has a high population of people making a hundred grand or more a year. It has a multi billion dollar agricultural industry, along other things. Is it really a high poverty area when you compare per capita statistics?

If they can keep ahead of regulations and taxes anyway. California has the 4th largest tax burden among states at nearly 14% of state GDP. Then add in federal taxes. They do have a lot of cheap labor though. Imagine what happens when they have to start paying 15$ an hour and healthcare to all their field labor?

And therein lies the problem that the left wants to ignore, the difference between the "haves and have nots" Isn't that what liberalism is supposed to address? I find it interesting that the agricultural parts of California are red where as Hollywood and Silicon Valley are deep blue. Just goes to how easy it is to indoctrinate people into an ideology and distract them from the actual results.

Actually, California ranks #17 in total taxes.

What happens when farmers have to start paying their field workers $15 an hour? Well, a lot of them already are, in order to get the best workers, but if/when that happens, the rest of the country will pay a bit more for fruit.

"The dollars went" to the red states, as my map and link clearly show.

Yes, and the link I gave you shows where those dollars went but you want to focus on the actual number and not the fact they went to FEDERAL ENTITLEMENT AND MANDATES. Guess you expect the citizens of the state to pay for those mandates?

There is a big difference between the haves and have nots, and that's for sure.
And, from that we conclude that California has a failed political ideology, or perhaps that it's not as "liberal" as people think. It depends on your definition of "liberal."

No question about it the haves aren't nearly as liberal as they would want us to believe as they made their money through the same economic system they now attack and do their best to keep people dependent
