The American Medical Association on Tuesday called for an immediate ban on all electronic cigarettes and vaping devices.
The group adopted the sweeping stance at a policy-making meeting in San Diego. It aims to lobby for state and federal laws, regulations or legal action to achieve a ban, but the industry is sure to fight back.

Has a reformed vaper, who stopped at 4 months after hacking up blood... I support this move.

Should throw cigarettes and cigars in there while we're at it.

I've been vaping since 2007, it literally saved my life. My Cardiologist, Oncologist and General Practitioner all agree.

"It's not killing you as much as smoking did" is a more accurate way of putting it.

It rubs people the wrong way when I say it, but vaping is "better" than smoking but it's "worse" also, as it makes it easier and more acceptable to maintain the addiction to nicotine.

If vaping had been popular when I decided to quit smoking, I'd likely still be using nicotine these several years later instead of parting ways with nicotine entirely.

It changed my life. No more waking up in the middle of the night gagging for air and I can walk up a mountain with ease since giving up cigs for vaping.

If people are putting THC, dope or anything else into their vape juice, that's their problem. Leave the rest of us alone.

This effect is almost single-handedly responsible for reversing the decline in teen smoking.

Unwise.

It opens the door to a "total ban" on all other items that are by health standards are in some way unsafe and can cause harm. Knowingly or not what this sort of call does is put everything from cigarettes to alcohol to even various foods on the exact same level (the list would be endless in the end.)

The AMA calls many things unsafe and as a general principle will have common themes on what you can expect to hear from a doctor on these things.

The better route is... taxation, regulation, and education.

Bans will send this all underground where these products will be even less safe, no real controls over what is in these products at all, ran pretty much by criminal enterprise, and add these products right along side other ban failures. Like the 'war on drugs' debate.

The reason is all the same, demand for them that does not go away because of a ban.

It's IMO amazingly irresponsible, and if enacted will kill people. I'm frankly stunned they took this step while NOT calling for a 'ban' on all tobacco products, criminalizing any and all production and use of tobacco.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but before vaping I used smokeless tobacco, and have been off it for years, and I vape, bike, run, 5 or 6 days a week, and haven't had any serious or even notable side effects. My doctors are on board - prefer nothing but as an alternative to tobacco are FAR more supportive of vaping. My risk of cancer has dropped by orders of magnitude, and even if it hadn't, it's a choice I made between smokeless tobacco and vaping. Why would you deny me that choice and force me back on tobacco proved to kill about 500,000 per YEAR in the United States? As an adult, why can't I make that choice for myself?

OK, so if that's true and I don't think the available data show that, so what? It's still a better alternative to tobacco, and a choice we should be able to make. You didn't support the ban, but the OP is not about about what's IDEAL or OPTIMAL but what we should be allowed to do, and AMA came down in favor of a ban on, criminalizing, the sale and use of vape products, but not a ban on the use of tobacco.

i'm not a vaper, but i don't agree. tobacco killed 480,000 people last year. i'd support regulating the products a lot better, though.

What the AMA failed to list is that most of the causes are due to THC and CBD oils.

the THC oils that people were smoking and dying was for 2 reasons.

1. they contained synthetic marajuana aka bathsalts.
2. some of the THC oil out there contains vitamin E acetate

this is an oil substance that is used to cut and stretch THC oils.
THis stuff is like tar almost.

I have not seen other people getting sick from smoking regular regulated nicotine products.
it seems to be all of the THC and CBD oils or whatever it is called.

I think it’s time to purge the AMA of leftists. There should be a mandatory test to weed out busybodies and anyone who is indentified as one should have their license revoked

No need to make this partisan. Trump moved to ban "flavored" vape products, which is no more defensible than a total ban.

I never used THC or CBD Snakeoils, just a Menthol OTC blend from my local vape shop. It was called Heisenburg. I just know I started coughing up blood.

So, there have been issues due to black market products.

So the solution is to ban the products that aren't black market.

This sounds like a high tone parody of the firearm debate.

Not a shock that this organization made another bad recommendation in a desperate attempt to stay relevant

Isn't it time to make it illegal to be any "more left" than Ronald Reagan was?

In the name of freedom, of course.

Since leftism is the antithesis of freedom then yes it is in the name of freedom.

I didn’t suggest making it illegal, only that certain professionals should Not be given license to use their influence to infringe on other’s rights

Dude, you're a monarchist. What do you know about freedom?

Its stupid to put unknown chemicals into your lungs. Lung tissue is way to delicate to abuse with an untested unregulated chemical. The smart move is to give up tobacco AND vaping.

If you're using unflavored, those chemicals are:

1. Nicotine.
2. acetylcholine, to bind the nicotine so it doesn't poison you if ingested or touched.
3. Vegetable oil, as a suspension liquid.

Stacked up against cigarettes, that's more or less harmless. Beats the pack and a half habit of cancer sticks I quit 6 years ago.

What's becoming clear is it depends on the compounds being vaporized. Instead of a wholesale ban, I think these products require more study and proper vetting by the FDA, which the industry should have sought to have done in the first place.

Now, you start adding flavorings, your mileage may vary. Especially if you're getting the cheap stuff, which may contain diacetyl. Or even a vitamin A derivative used as a thickener, which will coat your lungs up then slice them to bits.

Lesson: Buy from someone reputable (Freedom Smoke, for example), rather than mail order crap from China.
