The flight and the cost to detain them over a week... would have more than covered to send 7 people back to the U.K.
And looking at the road:
US tried to return Connors family after illegal entry but Canada refused - Insider
I mean it's not entirely impossible late at night an animal crossed that road and caused the car to swerve and maybe mixed up their directions or whatever, I know a lot of people who are geographically challenged, and whatever. Or maybe they did intentionally cross over for whatever reason, still think the person who caught them could have just turned them around and kept an eye.
Interesting picture.
The earlier stories implied that the incident took place closer to Sumas (which is close to Abbotsford) and not close to Lyndon (which is close to Aldergrove). I suppose the fact that both Abbotsford and Aldergrove start with the letter "A" and that Aldergrove is a "neighbourhood" rather than a municipality could have confused the reporters who didn't have access to the Internet.
However, the CBP video doesn't "quite" confirm the people's story that they "accidentally" crossed the US/Canada boundary so it really doesn't matter how easy it would have been for them to do something that they didn't do isn't really all that important - is it?
