2019-2020 NHL Thread - Ice Hockey Baby!!!

Didn’t watch it all, but most of those were hard, clean hits.

You have to understand hockey... it’s a physical game, and hitting hard is used to (a) remove the player from the puck (or as any kid was taught when I played... take the body, not the puck)... (b) to make players fearful... because if you know you’re going to get hit, you’re more likely to make a bad play, and to (c) punish the opposition... it’s a physical game (see point “b”).

This is why Toronto wouldn’t go far in the playoffs should they make it. Too many ballerina’s, not enough grit.

As for fighting... nobody gets more than a cut, and it is better than the Euro solution... which is cheap shots and using your stick.

There’s a fraction of the brutality as the old clutch-and-grab era. Everyone has to be able to play today... but with the greater speed, comes more spectacular hits.

I don't mind the hard hits, but the head shots are uncalled for.

WHo was the goon that they intentionally hit in the head with a puck a few years ago? Stevenson, I think. He hunted one head too many, I guess.

I’m not for head shot either, but they unfortunately happen because the game is high paced. It’s the intentional ones that suck... and for that players know such pricks will be targeted. .. rightly so.

That said, I don’t disagree with what Derek Sanderson said years ago... that problem would be eliminated if they played without helmets.

I grew up in that era. No head hunting, just hard body checks.

RIP Colby Cave, 25.

NHL plans to return with 24 teams competing for Stanley Cup

The NHL announced its Return to Play Plan on Tuesday with 24 teams in competition for the Stanley Cup.

The tournament will begin with a 16-team, eight-series Qualifying Round and a Seeding Round Robin among the top four teams in each conference to determine seeds for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The NHL paused the regular season March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus and its remaining 189 games will not be completed. The 12 qualifying teams from the Eastern and Western conferences were determined by points percentage as of that date. Seven teams did not qualify.

To answer your questions:

Florida for Le Coupe Stanley. Underrated, young, fast, deep, great goaltending and a coach who knows how. They need to get off to a good start... they’ve sucked early the past couple years and came close but couldn’t make up the deficit.

Hope LA makes the playoffs.

Watch out for Vancouver. Looking forward to the Oilers sucking again... ROTFLOL...

A “tanker” among teams that finished 1st or 2nd... San Jose.

Well... I got the “tanker” team right.

Brobovsky has been a disappointment in Florida... hopefully he finds his form.

Vancouver has been good...

As for the playoffs... if Columbus gets decent goaltending... they’re going to run over the figure skating Leafs. It’s best of 5 and hopefully Toronto isn’t one of the two host cities.

NHL training camps for the 24 team playoffs start July 10th.

I am watching live hockey again. Life is good.

Toronto and Edmonton are trying to blow it already...

Piped in crowd noises are so lame.

The players said it was too quiet without it. I like the huge screens with the fans on them. I think that is in Edmonton. Go Isles! I also enjoyed watching Columbus take it to Toronto and the rags getting pummeled.

The NHL has managed to maintain a sense of humor about these empty stadium games:

Pitt melted down. Oilers melted down. Toronto melting down and unless they figure out how to play like they give a **** are going to be gone too.

Took an extra game but pajama boy is done. After a complete collapse in game 4 I was really surprised the way Columbus played. They have a real good chance against Tampa with Hedman and Stamkos out.

I don't like to do it, but I have to give Tortorella a ton of credit for his work this year. He has really seemed to turn over a new leaf, and I am kinda impressed. He has earned the Adams award easily to my mind.

I still think Tampa is the team to beat, but I thought that last year too...

I can't help myself. Forgive me.

Anyone pea green with envy that the Rangers drew the number one draft pick yesterday?

If it had been Edmonton, Toronto or Pitt, I would have been pissed. As a Detroit fan, NYR getting the pick is just mildly irritating. It could have been so much worse.

If the Penguins got it, I would have kicked a puppy.

I'm sure the Rangers will draft Alexis Lafrenière. They say he's the second coming of Sidney Crosby without the asshole factor that's Crosby.

First game of Tampa/Columbus is everything hockey should be. Almost done with the second OT, and neither team giving an inch.
