“White Fragility” Prevents White Americans from Confronting Racism

Here is her problem:

This concept came out of my on-going experience leading discussions on race, racism, white privilege and white supremacy with primarily white audiences. It became clear over time that white people have extremely low thresholds for enduring any discomfort associated with challenges to our racial worldviews. We can manage the first round of challenge by ending the discussion through platitudes — usually something that starts with “People just need to,” or “Race doesn’t really have any meaning to me,” or “Everybody’s racist.” Scratch any further on that surface, however, and we fall apart.

Socialized into a deeply internalized sense of superiority and entitlement that we are either not consciously aware of or can never admit to ourselves, we become highly fragile in conversations about race. We experience a challenge to our racial worldview as a challenge to our very identities as good, moral people. It also challenges our sense of rightful place in the hierarchy. Thus, we perceive any attempt to connect us to the system of racism as a very unsettling and unfair moral offense.

She has taken the closed mindedness (Rot) that is all around Western Civilization now (to include at DP) which is a result of the decline of the civilization and the resulting mad panicked dash to UTOPIA as we sense things going bad and then she pivots to "SEE SEE....White people Suck!". She either never looked around enough to notice that this closed mindedness is everywhere and thus not about race which would make her stupid, or else she is lying because she has an agenda to sell.

It could be either or or both.

I read it. In my opinion the defensiveness isn't more complicated than people knowing or fearing that their racism is wrong by objective standards but they can't help having racist bias anyway. I suspect this is true of most of us.

I am someone that generally agrees that we are still dealing with institutionalized racism in the US but I'm not just buying into something that smacks of its own smugness and hyperbole without foundation.

Oh, I’d say they are good at discussing why we need voter ID to protect integrity of elections but not more security to protect integrity of voting machines. :roll:

Have to be honest, I expected the worse when I clicked on the link. But I do agree with most of what she said. I just take issue with assuming that every white person is the same. That it's impossible for a white person to not be 'colorblind' and that when one says such, they are only being defensive, or just not aware of it. (I'm paraphrasing.)

She's basically saying that white people can never really be non-racist.

If that's really the case, then there is no hope at all. And I just don't buy that part of her theory, because I know better.

Of course the books author's point “that white progressives cause the most daily damage to people of color.” Not only do these people fail to see their complicity, but they take a self-serving approach to ongoing anti-racism efforts: “To the degree that white progressives think we have arrived, we will put our energy into making sure that others see us as having arrived.” is what many people, including myself, have said in the past.

Perhaps because she pointed out that they themselves, the social justice crowd, were part of the problem? Of course they wouldn't like that. That's the same denial that others are accused of as well.

I talk about racism realistically all the time......but Liberals don't like reality. Unable to refute--they call me a racist.

Immigration is a good example of the Liberal failure to see reality. They see Trump's immigration policy as racist.

Here's the reality:

If it turns out to be racism to carefully choose immigrants and choose only a few of the best qualified.......then racism is good because it improves America.

Letting unqualified black and brown people into America JUST BECAUSE they're black/brown and pathetic is a bad kind of racism......the worst kind.

There's nothing good about it because the dissonant and unAmerican aliens will never assimilate and never be happy in America......they'll just cause problems and raise children that will cause even more problems in the future.

A house divided against itself cannot stand.

A house full of dysfunctional family members who hate each other is doomed to fall into strife and eventually civil war.

Liberals dream of an America that is the color of cinnamon where we all love each other.

It's the dream that's destroying America.

We don't need to have a "talk" about race. We need to have a lecture, with white people listening and people of color talking.

White people are just angry that they can't derail the conversation with "black people have a toxic culture, there's too many fatherless homes, they don't care about school, their communities need more policing, they are genetically less intelligent", etc. All whites who believe anything other than systemic racism creates the gaps between white people and black people in the country need to shamed and silenced.

The remedy is not at the foot of the cross but instead the remedy is following the footsteps of the one who died on that cross.

When you figure that out you're going to be WAY ahead of where you're at now.

Uhh, Romans 3:10, 23, basically all throughout Scripture there is a clear indictment and conviction of the condition of mankind. Jeremiah wrote that the heart is "deceitful above all things and desperately wicked..." The only solution is not to earn salvation, but to receive it through Christ. it is impossible for man to do good under his own power.

And here, ladies and gentlemen is a prime example of a black racist. People like you make me want to throw up! I was never raised nor taught that skin color matters. I do believe in King's ideal of judging a person by the content of their character and from what I see, you sir, have none!

I believe most of us think in terms of race, and that is racism. The article seems to imply that we fear self-reflecting on that. Maybe, it's that.

Or, maybe it is something more sinister. IMO, the fear might be admitting it publicly because we know that if we do, we will be engulfed by firestorm of criticism.

Examples:

1. When reading about a certain crime, the mind thinks, "Black Dude."
2. When someone completely ignores a police order and gets shot, the response is to think, "Black thing."
3. When a black person graduates from prestigious university, thoughts leap to "Affirmative Action"
4. When black male follows you or is seen hanging out around an establishment, concerns are that "he is up to no good."
5. When a black person comes in for an interview, the first idea creeping into the head is "lawsuit."

The piece suggests the Left progressive will keep these thoughts to himself, bury them even and pretend he doesn't harbor them. And, she's probably right. But...

How many of those progressives would freely admit it if not for the anticipated firestorm which follows said admission?

This is why as a Conservative, I said I don't give a rat's ass about skin color.
 
I don't think it's possible to be completely colour-blind/non-racist. If you are white and you prefer your romantic partners to be white as well (this is the case for a lot of white people) then according to the Left, this is an instance of "racism". Not that we should try to please the lefties or anything, but I just want to point this out.

I'm white, Jim Bob. Just because I can understand systemic racism doesn't mean I'm a person of color.
