Re: Where are you from?

Thanks. Originally EurAsia meant the whole of Europe and Asia.

As a continent it still means that.

After all they are all connected. It is the last vestige of the original first continent before it broke off North America, South America, Africa, Australia, and India -- at least according to the plate tectonics theory and the geology relating to it.

But when we speak of the nations of Eurasia we usually mean Russia and Turkey.

West of it is Europe. East of it is Asia. South of it is the Near East aka Middle East. North of it is the Arctic.

On the other hand I can see that this forum is 82% American. American values are very different from those in other democracies.

Re: Where are you from?

Born and raised in eastern Connecticut and, as an older adult, took my lifetime love of the Boston Red Sox to move to southern New York.

Am French-Canadian from my father's side (the family name entering Canada in the late 1500's) and Scottish from my mother's side.

Yes exactly.

The one man who influenced America and Americans the most is the philosopher John Locke.

His views from the early 1700's were adopted by the Founding Freemasons and have been taught to us as doctrine ever since.

Americans are however split on several particular issues.

FDR's (a former president from the 1930's and 1940's) notion of "a new deal" also known as a "social safety net" is not endorsed by all -- by a majority yes but not all.

The 2nd Amendment's right to guns is not endorsed by all -- actually by slightly less than a majority. A slight majority fear guns and think they can legislate them away.

The Catholic Church's anti abortion views are not endorsed by all, however a goodly proportion of the mostly Protestant population are anti abortion.

Historically prior to Dec 7 1941 the USA was isolationist and anti war. Now however the majority of the population cheer wars like football games same as the Europeans did prior to WW1. It would take a really bad outcome to a really bad war to make America anti war again. For a while after Viet Nam the USA was briefly anti war. But nothing like WW1 for the Europeans has ever happened to the Americans. Wars have typically been successful for the USA except in Somalia and in Viet Nam.

Also, in USA, Libertarian values are much stronger then in UK, and other democracies.

So why don't you define "libertarian" for us so that we know what you are talking about.

Everyone pretty much understands "liberal" and "conservative" but "libertarian" could mean the dark side of the moon to most.

For instance, in USA the values of Freedom are much stronger then in UK. In UK, hundreds of people were jailed for offensive posts online.

Like I said, I could not tell you what "libertarianism" means and neither could most Americans. I suppose only the libertarianists know.

Our ballots for Federal and State always have a dozen candidates on them from a dozen separate political parties.

Libertarians are one of them, but I can't tell you what they stand for. No idea.

Re: Where are you from?

My own thoughts on this poll was that anyone who does not divide the USA into its components does not really understand the USA.

- New England
- Midwest
- Mid Atlantic
- Southern
- Southwest
- Intermountain
- Northwest
- California
- Florida
- Texas
- New York.

:)

I think that about every country I've lived in. Diversity, even within countries way smaller geographically than the US, is demonstrably real. You can't talk about a British personality, as a republican Catholic from Londonderry would be as different from a Londoner as s/he would be from a New Yorker. You can't assume that an Andalusian farm-worker would have anything much in common with a Galician trawlerman - not even language. So you're right, you can't bundle whole nations together and say "Americans are this, Germans are that." Can't be done.

I'm not defending the UK as it's heading down a very repressive track at present, with attacks on basic freedoms happening the whole time. I would correct you on the US being a bastion of liberty however.

Look at the facts: the federal government spies on its citizens in a systematic and unchallenged way; it jails whistle-blowers and protects the military and intelligence agencies that act illegally against the privacy and security of American citizens; it carries out the assassination of its own citizens; it now has the most militarised and extensive policing régime in the world; it jails a greater proportion of its population than China, Russia, Zimbabwe, or Iran; self-censorship of artistic expression is endemic; it incarcerates for years people to whom it offers no due process. Need I go on?

Watch that and tell me how free you feel.

Now, the UK engages in many of those things too and is every bit as reprehensible on many, but to claim that the USA remains some kind of beacon of freedom and liberty for all is to be self-deluding to a ridiculous extent.

Re: Where are you from?

Born in NJ to an Irish mother and German father. Raised there. Lived many places since. Now in NH.

Re: Where are you from?

Where in the World? I came to USA from USSR in early 1980s. I visit both English language and Russian language forums.

I didn't see "TEXAS" on your list. There seems to be a significant population here who believe Texas was, is, and forever should be "The Republic of Texas".

Re: Where are you from?

I am from and posting from Swindon England UK, though I did live in Australia for 30 years, and probably seen more of the country than majority of Aussies.

Do you miss it and have you settled back home ok?

Re: Where are you from?

Dardania is in Eastern Europe. The only one that clicked that thus far.

Re: Where are you from?

Yes, I miss Australia. A beautiful country, and yes, I am settled back home in UK ok. The UK has its problems, but then so does most countries on the planet.

Hey, you chose Swindon!!!

For American viewers, imagine an uglier version of Scranton PA, or Dayton OH.

So true and it's good to hear you have settled back home ok. If you follow football, at least now you won't have to get up in the middle of the night to watch it!
