The point is that getting tested tells you whether you are a threat to spread the virus around. Of course, that hardly matters when people are pretty much forced to wear masks everywhere in some states.

If you are asymptomatic, chances are you aren't going to get a recommendation to be tested. I had a sinus infection with some symptoms last week but wasn't running a fever. No one at the clinic I went to (appointment done sitting in my car) suggested I get tested. Never came up, although it was a testing site and 3 other car patients were tested during my time there.

Those flu seasons came with known immunities and vaccines. And those 10s of thousands of deaths were with no measures taken beyond "wash your hands, don't go to work sick (which many can't afford)". With measures taken, in about half of a normal flu seasons, we are seeing over a hundred thousand deaths, so far.

Most places are not just giving people who are asymptomatic a covid test. In fact, you can have several symptoms and still not get one in some places.

Yea, of course masks now will save more lives, but that doesn’t change the point. Masks undoubted would have saved 10s of thousands over the years had we been wearing masks every flue season, if they indeed work.
