When I'm faced with more possibilities than I have reamining guesses, I try to think of a throw-away word that tests multiple choices. For example, if I've used 4 guesses and have S T A and E, but only the E in the 5th slot and green, the answer could be stake, skate, state, or stave. so, I enter evoke, and that tests 3 of the 4. If it's none of them, then state must be the answer.
