Even though I am not a big fan of Stephen Colbert, he actually is funny. I can actually watch his show.

However I tried watching an episode of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, and it was very bad, the complete opposite of funny. I get a similar reaction when watching other female comedians like Amy Schumer and Sarah Silverman.

Now, this thread may get some slack. I am not saying ALL female comedians are unfunny, but IMO the majority of them are. IMO female comedians can only be really good in a narrow range of categories. When I see a female being really nasty, that is just a turn off. It just doesn't work.

What are your thoughts?

I think Amy Schumer is pretty hilarious. Sarah Silverman has her moments.

Women comics are only less funny than men to people who have strong psychological problems with women.

The majority of people would disagree.

Put a list of top 100 comedians, how many females make that list?

I'm sure there are a lot more male comedians than female, in general.

Your OP, you provide the list?

OK BUCKY!.....Coming through with the Quality!

What ever the reason is it is closely related to why women tend to fail in Corporate America......maybe that they are too focused on being small bore pleasers to be excellent.

I dont have an answer, not really, but this has been on my mind for years.

GOOD LUCK!

Good question. On one hand, I think it appeals to men more than women (even at a young age, the "class clown" tends to be a boy). On the other, I think that even for women who do enjoy being humorous, it tends to get socialized out of them.

Both sexes are likely to seek a partner with a "good sense if humor" but women tend to think of that as a guy who is funny, and men tend to think if that as a gal who will laugh at his jokes.

Men lead and women follow.....sounds familiar.

Perhaps the issue is with you, not female comedians. Have you tried asking women, or men that don't assume all women are sex objects, whether they find female comedians funny?

For women finding a man that is funny (except for George Stepanapolis wife) seems to be a deal breaker where as for men it is not.

Men in general take more risks and in comedy you need to take more risks.

John Belushi. Massive asshole.

Yeah. Who populated the list? A bunch of rich white guys sitting around trying to decide who is funny and who isn't.

Funny is relative, anyway.

I like female comedian jokes about grunting misogynists, and I can see why some folks might not find that, too, funny.

If you knew my relatives, you would know what 'funny' was.. even if it wasn't in the HUMOROUS way!

Some females are funny. Some not so much. Same with teh menz.

I find several female comedians very funny.

Kathleen Madigan

Maria Bamford

Lisa Lampanelli

It depends on your point of view. They are outnumbered, for sure (more male comedians). But, I find them a lot funnier than my hubby does.

I beg to differ. For a woman to make it in stand up they take far more risks than men. But successful women are used to that.

If you watched Bridesmaids and didn't laugh... you just aren't human.

I don't think Samantha Bee is particularly funny either, don't rate all women on that. Comedy is a hard, brutal sport, it's not surprising women traditionally have not been welcomed into it, or would even want to step into it...the nightclubs, the heckling, it's a trial by fire. And yet, there are plenty of comedic women actors who are funny.

Colbert is not an average guy, he spun of Colbert Report and made it work...the show was every bit as good as Daily Show but entirely different. And the persona and delivery of that show...so much went into it, so fast paced...the Americone Dream style stunts, good stuff. Comparing Bee to someone who became a legend is hard. Its like comparing Luke and Lea to Han...I mean, Harrison went on to be A+++ list, because he just had the stuff.

Amy Poehler I've always liked..I don't like Parks and Rec, but I like her work in general. I've seen her since Upright Citizens Brigade. Let's see, recently I watched Community on Hulu, I thought Alison Brie and Gillian Jacobs were superb in those comedic roles. Seinfeld's Julia LD I found charming and funny. Four strong comedic actors that entire shows run. Carol Burnett is a rock star, she's done it all.

Some of it may be gender, but it's hard to worry about that today, when we're just now creeping out of a male dominated society, there will be pockets of resistance that are slow to change, for a variety of reasons. Be careful of being too Bucky/Tigger/Misogynist, it's a primitive response/emotion that isn't all that helpful to society.

Richard Pryor, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Dave Chapelle and Bill Cosby are not white.

Gilda Radner was the funniest person alive when she lived

I personally think it is more biological. Men, in general, tell more jokes while women like to laugh more. It is actually primitive mating behavior. Women laugh to attract men while men tell jokes to attract women.

When you flip the script it is somewhat unnatural. Ask women, they would probably find Chris Farley or Jim Carey's comedy funny but if women did the same thing, they wouldn't nearly get the same laughs.

That's why, like again, I said in the beginning, women have a much narrow range of comedy. You don't see many female Chris Farley type comedians. The female comedian you see that are actually funny fall in the skinny, nerdy, lesbian, intellectual side like Ellen or Tina Fey. You have much more diversity in terms of race, style, intellect from men.
