The impact of a VP on an election is tiny.


With the exception that a VP can win you their state. Trump might win Florida for example. Say there was a democrat senator or governor in Florida, if Biden picked them, that might sway Florida into the Joe Biden came, winning him Florida.

But VP isn't going to matter otherwise. Unless Joe Biden drops dead in the next 4 years.

Ryan couldn't flip Wisconsin for Romney
Edwards couldn't flip North Carolina for Kerry.
Kemp/Ferraro/Miller/FDR couldn't flip NY for Dole/Mondale/Goldwater/Cox.
Bentsen couldn't flip Texas for Dukakis
Shriver couldn't flip Maryland for McGovern

If we look at Tim Kaine and Virginia in 2016, yes Clinton carried that state, but: (a) Obama won the state in 2012 and 2008, and (b) Clinton got about 49% of the vote, compared to Obama who got 51 and 52% of the vote.

Politico wrote an article back in 2016 that there's no statistical evidence to show that Johnson and Agnew didn't really help out JFK and Nixon win their home state.

Let me restate the reality for your very simply. The conventional wisdom is that Trump mishandled the response to the pandemic. There were over 100,000 deaths from this virus in the US (and still climbing), by far the highest in the world. Trump will be held to account for the difference between US deaths and what the US deaths would have been had the US followed best practices (essentially Australia or New Zealand's death rate). That difference will on Trump's ledger and used against him, rightfully so, in the election. Some people will not buy it (those that would vote for him even if he murdered someone on 5th avenue .... which is pretty close to what happened here), but most people will.

With 10's of thousands of deaths attributed to his ineptness plus double digit unemployment..... well the Bengals have a better shot of winning the Super Bowl this year than Trump has being re-elected.

In a typical year you're correct. This is no typical year. It's obvious to any honest person that although Joe may not drop dead that he certainly will not last 4 years as president and will be replaced with the VP. I don't recall anyone ever running for president in such a sorry condition before. It's really a strange thing, bordering on elder abuse. His immediate family should be ashamed. Which is why it never mattered who the VP pick was but it matters a great deal this time. And people know it.
