Agreed...toughest part is not getting drawn into the shot for shot mentality that goes on in debate forums. When people go out of their way to be as big an asshole as possible it's very difficult to remember to keep one's temper in check. However, it's worth it... I've had knock em down brawls with folks in the forums from "the other side", only to find out in PM's that we'd get along just great outside of this venue.
We need to get past the knee jerk response that anyone opposing us needs to be obliterated for the slightest offense or misstep or difference of opinion. I find the "Don't be a jerk" rule gets largely ignored in the heat of debate here, and I'm not claiming innocence on this one. Being a jerk is habit forming, and it takes deliberate and intentional effort to take that deep breath before starting your response. However, if you're unwilling to put in that effort, you really have no business pointing fingers, and if you're not willing to scrutinize your own "side", you have no business criticizing the other. I think it's high time we raise the bar on what's considered "debate"...
Basically, what should be clear to everyone here, is that going forward there are no wins unless everyone wins. Pounding an opponent into the dirt might feel good, but furthers the divide, in which case we all lose.
